I finally got the frame today, the moon is el finito.
Joyce Kozloff, New England Decorative Mural, 1979-85
In this commissioned public piece, Kozloff looks back to the tradition of New England folk art by invoking quilting patterns on the wall of a subway station. Although the whole piece is unified, Kozloff juxtaposes different patterns to create a sense of interest while defying the notion of a wallpaper-like single pattern throughout the piece. This work is completely opposite of Richard Serra’s Tilted Arc; while Serra’s work meant to provoke and disrupt the viewer’s interaction with the space it was installed in, Kozloff’s pice serves to beautify the subway station, injecting art and color into everyday life in a pleasing way.
