one of my favorite things about Devilman is how Akira starts off as a very meek boy who never stands up for himself and would do anything for Ryo, no matter how unhealthy their relationship can be, but throughout the manga he gains so much confidence and relentlessly follows his moral compass until he is able to gather an army to save Humanity and fights Ryo because he fundamentally disagrees with him. and Ryo always knew that Akira had the potential to become this incredible person, and that’s why he made him Devilman despite the beginning of the manga showing very clearly that Akira was too weak to stand up for himself or his loved ones.

ok yeah but. I would like to amend some things here. There’s different points in the manga where both Ryo and Miki seem to be very off put by Akira’s behavior as a devilman… Including yelling at Miki, and slapping Ryo to get his way, and let’s not forget Ryo in the hospital scene starting to regret making Akira a devilman, AND him saying it outright later on.

Also Go Nagai saying himself that Akira is not the heroic type.

So while I understand what you’re saying here with “he became more confident.” In this regard he didn’t actually. He instead used his fight instinct than his flight instinct after he fused with Amon. There’s too many instances where Ryo REGRETS “”doing this”” to Akira. (As a note I would point out that he gave Akira the option to opt out MANY times. Akira still went through with it) 

Akira did not become a confident hero. He has a hero complex, for sure, but that does not mean he wants to protect humanity. Are we forgetting how he burns some humans alive and tells them to go to hell?
