JAKE WANTS TO BE SOBER. drugs for him, like many people -- are an escape from reality, a chance to feel anything other than melancholy and disruption. in day 5, episode 2, it is brushed upon that jake was once very intelligent and was, for lack of a better term, a good kid. however, he was a victim of a divorce, which actually statistically makes sense for his drug addiction ( studies have been done about divorced children being more likely to fail exams & do drugs ). it is assumed that due to this, along with his mother’s death that was done inadvertently by his father, he picked up a habit to feel better because he had a family that disregarded him & outcast him ( to the point that when they have another kid, he calls her the do over batch because “the first one got fucked up” ).

and here’s where our VICIOUS CYCLE starts for jake: he wants to live a normal life and be sober ( proven by his empathy and need to help others in episode one -- calling a woman ‘m’am’ and what have you ) but because of his inadequacy and his father’s general lack of apathy toward him ( furthered by jake’s drug addiction ) and overwhelming sorrow due to his mother’s death, JAKE SEES NO REASON TO BE SOBER. therefore he tries, feels discouraged, and then uses to make it “better” so called, even though it only causes further rift from him and his family ( outside his little half sister, megan ). a consistent circle -- always trying to be better but falling short and therefore restarting the cycle of drug use.

Aria had enough experience to believe that she would not to stick with what she had known - familiar paths always led the same, ragged way. Though, she DID want the release and break of life, to forget. After consideration, breaks meant a crash back to REALITY, and instead of going up from ROCK BOTTOM, she found her way to drill through further into the ground, incapable of escape. The path looped, leading her to the same thing, the same choices. A genius she may be, but she was a failure to HUMAN CONSCIOUS.

IT WAS SICKENING. The way fingers fit in their perfect place upon her body, as if they missed the touch. As if she ACHED for the attention – and she DID.
