What Ai couldn’t understand was that she’d been plotting her own demise even before she had been born, but had postponed it to raise her children, later to spend her marriage to Zero in peace. But he was gone now and her children had since grown.
It could’ve been any other pureblood’s heart, even Ai’s! But she couldn’t bare the thought of someone else sacrificing themselves for him. It had to be her. It NEEDED to be her.

She uttered like a ghost, voice meek, gentle and crackling like stained glass as she turned to the side, to face her daughter. There was no malice tainting her cherubic face, neither the grief she held so carefully upon her visage since Zero’s death. If anything, she looked content. She was at peace.

The gentle matriarch released a small puff of air, her attention returning onto the pup’s ear as she gave it a light scratch behind it. If her daughter was happy, who was she to deny her a pet? After all, the many books she read while pregnant surely did emphasize the benefits of having pets around developing children.
“He would’ve loved to have a dog. Way before grandpa Kaien became my new father, mum and dad used to create pets to keep me and that person entertained. I’ll show you how to do that when you grow a little bit older.”
First she needed to master the art of blood creations herself before she could pass it onto Ai. Undoubtedly, she would able to pick it up quicker than Yuuki will. Ai was a smart kid, after all.

She felt piercing embarrassment upon hearing White Lily, Yuuki swallowed bitterly as the image of Zero’s terrifying horse flashed vividly in her mind. Why Lily didn’t like her, was beyond her comprehension.
