Freedom was… a curious choice of a word, one that Alana took just a moment to jot down on the notepad currently balanced on her crossed thighs. She’d read John’s case files, studied them carefully with an objective lens to the best of her ability, but the crimes were not particularly fun to glance through. Still… they paled in comparison to what she’d seen from Hannibal Lecter and the other killers that had plagued her early years of psychiatry – though their tone was entirely different. Art had been the focus of the others, creating beauty of death in a macabre way, but this man’s? They were part of what he deemed to be a religious mission brought straight from God himself, with faith the instigator of his knife. It wasn’t unheard of, but it would be interesting to decipher sanity from insanity given the facts.

“Of course. I know its stereotypical for a psychiatrist to say it, but that’s what I’m here for, genuinely.          ˜”*°•.   Interesting  had  it always  been:  how a  silly  tale or  two  could only  amplify  people’s fears.  How  a few  rumours  here and  there  could send  humans  into  an  almighty terror.  It  took  no  effort either:  his  single presence  enough  to  scare  the other,  cause  quite an  uneasiness,  an anxiety.  His  vaneer still  casual,  his  façade still nonchalant,  and  yet the  other  was apprehensive,  nervous  – oh  he  could only  imagine  the  man’s  reaction  should his  vessel  have looked  wilder  –.   Quite  enthralling  really.  But..  business  was  business,  and  right  now,  buisness  asked  THIS.  

❝ Yeah..  this whole  ‘  let’s eat  people  alive and  then  dance  in  their remains ‘  ?  Not really  my  thing. ❞   A casual  apathy  accompanied his  shrug.  ❝ No no.  The  question  is   NOT   what I  want.  The question  is  what  do   YOU   want. ❞  Came the  correction  – gaze  travelling  around, scrutinizing  the  place //  not  bad,  yet…  kind of  boring,  mundane –.   ❝ Wow.  You  really  live   here  ?  I  mean,  no  offence  obviously,  but.. ❞  

Eating people? What was the guy...demon talking about? John had never once said or even believed that demons ate people. Possession yes, but not cannibalism. His mind had never considered the possibility, so there was no reason for it to go there. Cannibalism was the sort of things you heard of in strange stories, or from crazed civilisations in the middle of nowhere. Did other people really expect demons to eat people? Or had this demon in particular been approaching fanatical people?

❝ Not my thing either, and I know possession is more a demon’s thing anyway. ❞ John replied stiffly.  ❝ So if you think you’re gonna take me over, you’re gonna be disappointed. I’m a man of God, you’d burn alive if you tried. ❞ Why had the demon even come? Did he truly think John was so easily swayed? Did he think John’s faith was weak?  ❝ I want to do God’s work, an’ that’s what I’ve been doing. ❞ He was removing the streets of sinners, punishing them for their crimes against God, and once they’d repented, he granted them a merciful death. What else could John want?  ❝ I live humbly. I can’t imagine a creature like yourself would understand that. ❞
