Please help an underfunded, low income classroom get a single piece of educational software
We don’t need much..even a single dollar would mean the world.
A week or so ago, my mom (an educational software saleswoman) called me begging me for help. Several years ago my family lost everything and Reddit came to our aid and provided for us. She remembered Reddit’s kindness and wanted to use it to help this man.
She received a call from a teacher named Glenn in regards to one of her products. He had seen what it did for students and felt that it was necessary for his classroom. The school could not provide funding for this piece of software, so Glenn decided to use his own money to buy it. Unfortunately, it was more expensive than anticipated and he ended up being short the money to purchase it.
My mom wouldn’t let that stand. After speaking with him, she was moved by his passion for his students, so she came to me for help to make his dream come true.
I asked Glenn to write a little about himself so you could get a better idea of what this situation is like.
My name is Glenn Dowell. I was born in a small town in Georgia called Lagrange and later raised in Atlanta. From high school I went onto Morehouse College and the American University in Cairo Egypt to achieve a Bachelors of Science degree in chemistry and mathematics. From humble beginnings I decided to give back and work in the field of education.
After eight years working with the school systems of metropolitan Atlanta, my family and I decided to move to South Carolina to explore new opportunities. My first experience working in South Carolina was in the alternative education setting after which I decided to work with the middle schools. I currently work with the Jasper County School District as a school teacher at Hardeeville Ridgeland Middle School.
Unlike other small towns, all someone has to do is search Jasper County on youtube and see that we have been recognized nationally for positive and negative things from laws against pants sagging, to gangs, to merging schools.
From my experience working with children, all kids are smart in some way and would benefit from new technology and caring teachers who come in with a moral responsibility to help them achieve academically. I have also found that certain academic pieces work better in teaching important concepts in math and science.
One such tool that I can see that has worked best is the Torch. This academic tool, along with group work and hands-on experiments have made a difference in almost every child’s life that I had the pleasure to teach. As a mechanic needs tools to work on cars or a programmer needs a computer to work, I have found that what works best for my classroom are the many lessons offered and created by the Torch.
Since working at the school I’ve incorporated many unique approaches to teaching, and I’ve learned that my students are more receptive to certain learning techniques than others. I am requesting funding for the Torch program because I know that this will make a huge impact on my kids and our learning community.
this is a link to the Torch, which is what Glenn needs for his classroom. While many schools buy several of these, Glenn is only asking for one.
You can donate to Glenn via paypal under
We plan on making some followup video/taking pictures of the students using the Torch in the classroom to provide good faith and thank the Reddit community. Any additional money we potentially made will be invested 100% into Glenn’s classroom.
If you can’t donate, please reblog. Or both. thank you guys so much for your support.
