A bad day? Victor scoffed softly but when Christine looked back up at him, her brown eyes swimming with ghosts, he sobered and watched her.

He listened to her. 

She need not say more than she had; she need not smile so. Victor understood what it was to travel hundreds of miles, to change your name and your life and to still wake up, swearing that the monsters of your past plagued you still, where you ought to feel safest. He did not know the name of Christine’s monster - if indeed, he had one - or if Christine’s monster still drew breath or if he had ever breathed at all. But he knew her monster in the same, bloody and visceral way he knew his own. But were they monsters still? Dead, as they were, what else could they be?

Victor took Christine’s hand in his. 

“I find there is a difference between monsters and ghosts,” he said softly. “You can kill a monster. Ghosts… come back to haunt. Which do you have, Christine? A monster or a ghost?”

She laughed sadly, massaging her face with her free hand as she gripped onto his hand. It wasn’t right to bring all of her emotions forward, to fixate upon all of her trauma and agony and memories when she would never feel comfortable enough to revel such a long story, let alone now when she was still worried about Raoul and how he was feeling.

Despite their argument, she couldn’t help but want to go to him, to try and comfort him. She’d believed what she said; she knew Raoul had his own weight to carry from the dastardly actions of Erik. He hated heat; it was only in the last few years that he grew comfortable around the open water again. And both of them never could sit quite right at the innocuous mention of a grasshopper. She was not alone in having been nearly destroyed, but she was alone in having known the Angel that existed in the same mortal body as Erik. In that, he could not empathize with her. She was saddened that difference stuck between them today to fill such a gap when she wanted to go to him.

But, she was not alone. More than anything, Christine would clutch that to her chest. With a husband, and children, and a true and honest friend, Christine was the farthest thing from alone she could imagine.  Imagine? Ha! She hadbeen alone; alone as one could possibly be. Her fingers massaged again over the scar that would never completely fade from her temple. Oh, she had known exactly how bitter loneliness was, and for as tried as she was today, she was not alone.

It didn’t make looking at mirrors any easier.

“I scarcely knew the difference when he was alive,” she sighed, more talking to herself than Victor. It was more than she’d ever said about Erik to anyone else besides Nadir or Raoul. She had a sneaking suspicion Victor was very much aware that Nadir knew her monster; why else would someone so old travel so far and speak in such unique solidarity?

“Joon, are you happy with the doctor as your friend?” he asked one time in the dead of night when neither of them could sleep. Philippe was sleeping in her arms, Christine’s favorite shawl draped over the toddler’s body. Marguerite, still very much a baby, was nestled close inside the crook of Nadir’s arm. Christine shrugged.

“I always have seen in him a kindred spirit with which I have scarcely seen outside myself, Raoul, and you, Nadir. I don’t know of anyone else who knows death, grief, and loneliness as intimately as he does. He makes me smile, he makes my children smile, and I am genuinely happy to know him...But when there are days I can scarcely drag myself from bed from under the weight of all the memories, he understands. He doesn’t press--I know he’s curious--and has this uncanny ability to simply...be there. And it means the world to me. He might rarely feel comfortable enough to express how much he cares about me, about the children, even about Raoul--but he understands. He understands so beautifully and tragically and sometimes I’m sure I’d not be who I was today without having someone near who understands.”

And he did understand. She shook her head only to dispel the tears in her eyes and took a deep inhale, letting the cool air relax the tightness in her lungs.

“I’m sorry, my darling. I--I don’t care to talk about it much longer.” The tea kettle whistled. “Here, let me pour the tea, love. You’ve done enough,” She stood, briefly squeezing his hand before moving towards the kettle, moving it off the fire to find her little box of tea leaves and two mugs. She needed to find things that made sense, that she could still do through all the fog of pain in her mind.

          How could I possibly leave, Erik? You’ve trapped me here! The thought in her head is anger, dripping a botched poison of rage and love and guilt and passion. The thoughts in her head are meant only to injure his pride, but instead infect her heart in the collateral damage of its creation. Tears stung in her eyes as thin knuckles grip tighter onto the arm of her favorite chair.

         Her favorite chair in the prison of a home and a death sentence of a marriage. Christine bites on her lip and winces only when she tastes her blood; not with the sharp pain. What sharper agony is more than knowing she is trapped to die with her dark angel? Either by his lasso or his treachery or some other cause, she knows he will kill her. Some day, Erik will be her most final undoing.

         Now, though, she’s angry. She’s angry because he’s infuriatingly selfish and, somehow, her requesting tea has turned to him pathetically weeping at her feet. Christine looks away, part of her angry that he’s here, part of her angry at herself for still yearning to comfort him.

         “Are you referring to our marriage contract, Erik?” The words are dark on a usually lighter tongue; her tone is as biting as the pain in her heart. “Or something else?” she asks before finally allowing her dark honey eyes to rest on his curved and bent over spine.
