—he sets down his shopping bags down by one of the arcade’s crane games , one with several types of plushies , calling back to haru and waving his arms once they’re free . “ c’mon ! it’s time for baby’s first crane catcher ! ” he walks around the container , inspecting the contents . hedgehogs , cute , mario mushrooms , a nice touch . of course there’s some pokemon plushies in there , too , but that’s a given . 

“ lots of people play akiba catcher now , but i don’t see the appeal , ” he explains as haru approaches . “ playing them in real life is so much more fun ! ” taiki digs several arcade tokens out of his pocket and turns to his friend . “ do you know how to play a crane game , or should the master explain ? ”

“Baby’s first...?” 

Haru hurries after him, already excited. She’s never been to an arcade before - her father used to call such pastimes unbecoming of a refined girl your age - but Taiki’s enthusiasm is contagious, and oh goodness gracious this machine is full of the cutest toys she has ever seen!!!!

Taiki is talking, but she almost doesn’t hear a word he says. How to play... the master...?

“I want one,” Haru announces, face all but pressed against the glass. There’s a bright turquoise dog with green bows on its ears sitting atop the pile, and its shiny glass eyes stare directly into her soul. “That one.”

She peels her gaze away from the plush dog, finally, and clasps her hands together as she looks at Taiki with wide eyes. “I’ve never done this before! How do I get him?”

“I’ll just wait for the cupcakes.” Futaba squats in front of the oven to watch them. She really doesn’t like vegetables that much. They were ok in curry and stuff, but by themselves…not so much. This wasn’t a new thing either.

Haru frowns and puffs out her cheeks, trying to look stern even though Futaba is ignoring her in favor of watching the cupcakes bake. “If you’re hungry, you should eat! Cupcakes are not a meal, Futaba.”

She’s always been an only child, but sometimes, she has to wonder if this is what it’s like to have a little sister. The thought makes her smile, despite herself, and she opens the fridge door to pull out the baby carrots.

this is in fact a skill i am very bad at because my go-to method is uhhh... bottling it up and not acknowledging it, but i am working on it! generally my go-to is video games. usually like... smash or hyrule warriors or something a lil mindless, but still colorful and fun!
