I thought these hands were S T R O N G with how they used to hold the world
Then it slipped away, I couldn’t quite keep it, now nothing isn’t B L U R R E D .
"You see a light at the end of this ugly ass tunnel. I don't."
There was no light at the end of the tunnel for men like him. After all that he’d seen, he wasn't even sure that God existed anymore, but if there was a hell, he’d be welcomed inside with open arms and a warm smile. He did, however, believe in angels. He left one behind every day when he went off to risk his life in some godforsaken battleground. If there was such a thing as a light at the end of the tunnel, he made a life out of turning his back on it, because it was so bright and magnificent it threatened to blind his unworthy eyes. That’s why he worked himself to the bone, why he bit the bullet every day and threw himself into hell’s open mouth. So that her light could stay on, so that when his time came, he could leave this world knowing that she would be okay, that she would be better than him.
“Do I see it? No, but what good am I if I turn my back on her? What kind of man could abandon the only hope he’s got to give his kid any kind of life? That ain’t the kinda man I wanna be.”
"I'm not supposed to be here." //u kno the verse
“You’ve got that right, Sweetheart.”
Shepherd didn’t take kindly to anyone setting foot in his home when they weren’t supposed to be there, but this girl always seemed to leave a body behind no matter where she went. That’s why he made sure that his gun was between them, almost like he was daring her to try anything.
“Care to give me a reason not to pull this here trigger, cause I ain’t seein’ one from where I’m standing.”

"You didn't want to be alone, and that's what all this boils down to. You can't stand the thought of being alone."
"It has never been like that, ever! I need you to see that. I'm begging you."
"Well, hey, you got another snappy one-liner, I'm all ears."
"Just take it easy. We got a slight change of plan."
"Don't you dare think that there is anything, past or present, that I would put in front of you!"
"It looked to me like you were enjoying it. Maybe too much."

The world suddenly began to make sense again. He was Booker Dewitt Zachary Shepherd, and this was.. Where was this? He had been pulled through a tear and this place was completely new to him. He quickly realized that he wasn’t alone, he withdrew his pistol and pointed it menacingly at the young stranger. It was a dark haired girl, beautiful, but unquestionably dangerous. In his experience anyone who was deliberately pulling people through tears was a menace.
“I reckon you better identify yourself. Right now!”
He’d seen her before. On the airship all that time ago, and again, and again, and again. She was like his shadow and he never realized it until now. Even without that, though... He knew her somehow, but he just couldn’t place where from.
Nathan when Shepherd asks for him: STRANGER DANGER
dude walks up in a trenchcoat and hat and it like ‘hello fellow human’
@manxrslave
Shepherd had been enjoying his day off until he heard the frantic knock at his door. Who could possibly be here at this hour? Probably one of the poor souls from the church or one of Anna’s friends or something. Then again, his daughter wasn’t even home. He answered the door and let out a bitter, heavy sigh.
It was Jack Wynand, covered in sweat, but he could still smell the booze on him. His so-called partner had ran here for some reason, and violated their agreement that he wasn’t to turn up at Shepherd’s home unannounced.
“This had better be good, Jack.” Shepherd said, Glowering at the younger man.
@selfmxdicating
The man in the trenchcoat approached the young man, offering him a smile and a friendly handshake. This was his element. Somehow, despite his antisocial tendencies following the war, Shepherd had become a people person. Maybe it was because of all those late nights he spent training himself to ask all the right questions so he could properly address his daughter’s peers and teachers.
“Hey, son. Think you could help a fella out?”
But what Nathan probably didn’t know was that the older man had been shadowing him all day. Getting an idea of where he went and what he did. It was part of the daily grind for a P.I. and that’s exactly what Shepherd was today.
“I’m looking for a guy named Nathan Prescott. You know him?”
