“Thanks, I appreciate it.” Thomas replied, sending the woman a small smile. It was becoming more and more easy for him to meet people in Atlanta, although he still hadn’t made too many actual friends at this point. Moving somewhere new was always hard that way, because it was like starting over completely. Thomas sat down in the chair, making himself comfy. “Oh trust me, you can’t be more boring than I am. I go to business school and deal with numbers all day and then usually just go home.”

“Yeah, no problem.” Vanessa replied softly, focusing on the page once more before flickering her eyes up to meet his. “Okay, maybe you do win.” She joked, laughing a little after her comment. “I was an art major, so I was always doing something fun in school. I stopped dealing with complicated math after I graduated high school.”

Noah signed as he dropped one of the books he was carrying, crouching down to pick it up before setting the stack on the table beside him. “Honestly, I’m starting to wonder if maybe I’d be better off replacing the books I couldn’t save by ordering them online. There’s only so many I can carry at once.” he said with a sigh. “I already had to put about five back that I was going to get today.”

“Or get the online text, y’know? I prefer reading physical books, but I do have a couple books on the Kindle app just for convenience.” Vanessa suggested, reading the titles on the spines of the books that he set down. “At this rate, you’ll have the sorest arms in the world trying to replace your old books.”

“No, no, no,” she waggled a finger for a moment, a shake of her head moving along with it as her blonde hair flowed over her shoulders. “You are incorrect, there is nothing wrong with drinking four cups of coffee in one day, not one bit.” she protested playfully, before she cocked a brow to raise another point. “You become a single mom and then try to tell me otherwise.”

“I just wanna make sure your heart doesn’t stop or something.” Vanessa joked as she stirred a couple packets of sugar into her own cup of coffee. “No, no, I believe you. Trust me, I don’t need to become a mom to know how busy you must always be.”

Norah sat at the counter of the bar, her finger ran around her cup of whiskey as she heard the husky voices in the back along with the soft country music on the background. Everything about the bar was extremely calming for her. She looked at the person beside her and a little smirk formed on her lips “Would you like a drink? My treat” she took a sip of her whiskey, her eyes never leaving the person beside her as she waited for their answer.

“I’d love one, thank you.” Vanessa murmured with a grin, shifting in her seat a little to get more comfortable. As summer came to an end, Vanessa saw a slow drop in art classes throughout the week. Parents were no longer able to have their cute little date nights, and students were starting back up with their studies. It made for a few boring shifts of doing nothing but cleaning up around the studio and teaching only a handful of people at a time. It was finally the last day of the work week, and V knew she deserved a drink to celebrate the start to her weekend.

Thomas had been in school for a little over a week now, and he was already feeling exhausted. He had underestimated the amount of work that he was going to have to do and in many ways he felt as though he didn’t have what it took. On the other hand, he knew that going home really wasn’t an option either. Walking down the street, he found his way to a familiar coffee shop. After getting his coffee, he noticed that all of the tables were full. He walked up to a nearby table, sending the person a smile. “Hey, can I sit here?”

Vanessa wasn’t one to be cooped up in the house all day, even if it meant relocating somewhere else to do exactly what she would’ve been doing at home. In this particular case, she was rereading one of her favorite books and enjoying a cup of coffee, fingers absentmindedly trailing up and down the side of the page as she breezed through the familiar lines. Her eyes trailed up to meet the person who’d approached her, and she couldn’t help but return his smile. “Yeah, of course.” She responded, motioning towards the chair in front of her. “I’m a little boring, but it’s all yours.”

With summer coming to an end, his brother Jack desperately wanted to one last BBQ in the park. Since Eric was a sucker for his younger brother, he obeyed his request and found himself standing in front of the barbecue with a cold beer in hand. It seemed though that he had bought more hamburgers than intended. Noticing someone passing by, Eric whistled to catch their attention. “You want a free burger?” 

Vanessa was so distracted with the text that her younger sister had sent that she had almost missed the whistle directed towards her. She glanced up, looking at him with a raised brow. “Huh? Me?” Dumb question, there was no one else around her. “Uh, yeah, I’d love one.” V typed out a quick response to her sister before slipping her phone in her back pocket and approaching the man. “Feeling generous today?”

“I’m telling you… Mom’s make everything better.” Following the storm, as per her own plea, Emmy found herself shacked up with her mother for about a week or so, which had caused her to go a bit AWOL, despite still being in Atlanta. Spending time with her had been a nice reprieve, but the brunette found herself slowly slinking back into reality. “Spending time with her was kind of like putting antiseptic on a wound before covering it with a bandaid. First, she stings you with the truth and some tough love, but eventually, that subsided and all the gross bacteria is cleaned out… Sorry, that sounds odd and probably doesn’t make any sense. The gross bacteria is a metaphor for all the thoughts in your head.”

“Oh, I totally agree.” Vanessa murmured, thinking about the time she’d spent talking to her own mother after the storm. Both of her parents were worried about she and her brother when the storm happened, but her mother was mostly concerned with Vanessa, seeing how she’d only been in the area for about a month or so now. It was difficult going through the disaster with hardly no support system around, so V took to calling her mother to help her work through how she was feeling. “No, no. It makes sense to me. Basically, moms are the best medicine.”

“Dude, I’m telling you, I’m not underage”  he sighed, the bartender didn’t want to believe him, he didn’t think that he looked that young, though some people have said he looked 19, others said he looked twenty one, not that he was offended, he didn’t see a bad thing about looking younger, differently from some people he thought it was actually a compliment. He pulled out his ID, and showed this ID, which showed the bartender that he was 26 years old. “See, I told you”  he watched as the bartender nodded his head and finally believed, before he started to make Cal’s drink. “Do I really look that young?”  

Vanessa couldn’t help but eavesdrop on the conversation happening next to her, casually sipping from her own bottle of beer as she scrolled through her Instagram account. She’d always been mistaken as younger than her actual age, but with the right outfit and touch of makeup, she was able to look like a believable adult. When the man next to her spoke, she cast a glance over to him, giving him a quick once over. “Well, how old are you really? You look pretty young to me.”

“Yeah, that’s what I was counting on. If your interests are vastly different now, then this would have been all for nothing.” Aiden smiles knowingly before closing the door then walking around the car to get to the driver’s seat. Just as he climbs in and starts the engine, he gives Vanessa a fleeting glance before focusing on setting the vehicle in motion. “I will give you a hint though since you asked nicely. It has something to do with Molly Ringwald– and no, it’s not a Sixteen Candles reference since that’s been done already.”

Vanessa’s smile only grew, anticipation taking over her entire body. She was almost vibrating with so much excitement she could hardly sit still, fingers tapping against her messenger bag. At his hint, V looked over at him. “It’s The Breakfast Club, isn’t it?” She asked, eyeing him with a soft laugh. “It’s definitely The Breakfast Club, I know it is. What are you up to, Hayes?” That had been her favorite movie ever since she was a little kid, and when they’d first started hanging out, it was their go-to movie to put on whenever they were hanging out. Whether they were studying, playing with her younger sister, or miscellaneous (if you catch my drift), it was usually in the rotation of the things they watched.

With who she used to be, and what she used to have to do—Valentina made sure to pick up on subtle signs. The way someone’s eye would twitch when they spoke, the few movements of their hands or things they’d touch to give off their nervous tick. While this girl in front of her was doing a marvelous job at keeping how she was feeling under a poker face, Valentina titled her head and took a guess. “You and Aiden….you were more than just friends—weren’t you?” she asked, blue orbs wanting to see how the other would react. That had to be the explanation on her tone change, otherwise this girl had a funny way of communicating.

Vanessa expected the other to pick up that there was some sort of history between her and Aiden, so instead of acting surprised, she just nodded. “You could say that, yeah.” Well, she wasn’t actually lying, but she didn’t want to be that person that went into explicit detail about their relationship, especially since they’d been broken up for about ten years now. “So, no story? What’s this I hear about him being in a band?” She asked, changing the subject in what she hoped to be a casual manner, still messing around with sleeve absentmindedly.

“It was quite the show,” Aanya said laughing as she smiled at the woman. “Oh no, really? I’m sorry to hear about that, but I’ve got to admit, I’ve also had one of those nights before.”

“Ah, it’s okay. Over and done with. I’m just glad I made it outta there alive and without alcohol poisoning, to be honest.” Vanessa admitted with a shrug of her shoulders. “How was the station, though? Any problems over there?”

Smiles never failed to be contagious for Dakota especially when they came from strangers. His faith in humanity had definitely dwindled over the years, what with the simple fact he could hardly trust his own family to have his back when the going got tough. But when a stranger smiled at you, it brought along with them the hope that perhaps mankind wasn’t doomed after all. Maybe there was still a few good seeds in the land of the lost. Or perhaps they just feel pressure to smile back, because someone was smiling back at them. Whatever way one looked at it, it didn’t matter. Because when the woman smiled at the thought of people banding together for a cause he couldn’t help but smile with her. And he gave a firm nod in agreement with her ideals, as they weren’t too hard to believe if one really thought about atlanta and its people. “You’re absolutely right…NEW YORK huh? You’re a few ways from home… don’t tell me it was our hospitality that brought you along to these parts?”

“Brooklyn, to be exact.” Vanessa added with a soft laugh, tucking a couple of curls behind her ear. “That was part of it, actually. That and the fact that my brother’s down here. I was ready for a change and I really missed him, so I came down without much of a second thought.” Sure, leaving New York was hard for V, but she wasn’t exactly ready to spend her entire life living in the big city. It’d always be her home, yet Atlanta was starting to feel more comfortable the longer she stayed, even with the storm. “Are you from here?”

Valentina wasn’t sure who this girl was, why her tone had decided to change once she mentioned Aiden and her concern for him. However, even if being with some of the people she had met and grow close with in Atlanta had changed Valentina’s ways for the better — she could always revert back if needed. Nodding her head as she swallowed the now warm liquid, she took a second to think of which one she’d actually want to talk about. “You know what, they’re both my favorite so I think you’re in for a double whammy,” her hands moving now to clasp one another on the table. “But, you know that’s if you’re actually comfortable with it. Because some how I think there’s a certain feeling you have towards this, and I’m not one to really care too long for games anymore. If you would have caught me about a month ago, maybe. So, cut the bullshit and explain your problem.”

Vanessa hardly reacted when the blonde spoke once more, shrugging her shoulders casually. If she was being honest, there was absolutely no problem. It was just her being jealous over someone she shouldn’t be jealous of anymore, but for some reason, Aiden was her soft spot. Part of her thought that he always would be. Seeing how she lit up at the mere mention of his name made her feel uneasy, but how was she supposed to explain that to a total stranger? “There’s no bullshit. No problem.” Vanessa replied simply, messing around with the heat sleeve on her coffee cup. “Tell the story or don’t, honestly. I just thought it’d be a nice to hear a story about a very old friend of mine.”

“After how drunk I got during the storm along with my concussion, you won’t see me dancing and making a fool out of myself for the next couple of weekends at the local bars and nightclubs,” Aanya said with a laugh and a shake of her head. “I was a mess singing I’m In Love With A Stripper by T-Pain while swinging around the fire station poles,” she told the person next to her continuing to laugh.

“I wholeheartedly wish I was there to witness that.” Vanessa murmured with a grin, shaking her head as well. “The only thing that happened to me when I got drunk was that I ended up crying in a corner while cradling a bottle. It wasn’t my proudest moment.”

“Of course it’s a surprise.” Aiden beams at her as they stride over to his car that’s parked nearby (or rather Alice’s car but nobody has to know that). “I’m trying to make up for those 10 years of birthdays I’ve missed, you know? The last time I celebrated your birthday with you was probably–” He stops, only remembering now that they celebrated her 16th birthday alone and handsy in her bedroom which in turns brings in an awkward expression from him. Bringing that up probably wouldn’t be the wisest thing to do right now. He quickly clears his throat as he opens the door to the passenger seat for her. “Well, you know what I mean. You’re in for a treat.”

“Can I at least get a hint?” Vanessa urged, following him over to the car with a soft laugh. When he brought up the last time he celebrated her birthday, she knew exactly what he was referencing to. Her parents and Emily had left to run a few birthday errands, and the two had utilized that time to the best of their ability. She couldn’t help the tiny half smile tugging at her lips as the memory played back in her head as she sat down. “I’m excited. My interests haven’t changed much, so I’m guessing this is gonna be good.”
