           ㅤ۪ㅤ۫ㅤ੭          ﹕          somehow   the   surprised   look   on   her   face   after   glancing   at   who   she’s   speaking   to   leaves   him   satisfied   .    it   says   a   lot   that   she   did   not   forget   about   him   and   the   article   she   wrote   about   him   .    it’s   such   a   petty   thing   to   feel   that   way   especially   if   none   of   this   is   her   fault   .    the   problem   started   with   him   and   his   stubborness   .      “    it’s   fine   .    i   mean   there   is   only   one   person   to   blame   here   .    and   that’s   not   you   .    ”      he   offers   her   a   reassuring   smile    ,    head   shaking   in   response   .      “    neither   did   i   .    what   brings   you   here    ?    thought   your   life   was   good   .    ”

                                     despite his reassurances and knowing that his problems now were not her fault, she still felt like the reason for his sour mood, even if it’s been a while since she released that article. “’good’ is... not how i’d describe it.” admittedly not the worst life in this world but narae didn’t like comparing hardships all too much. each person had every reason to feel hurt or distressed, no matter how different their problems were. “i was cheated on. cliché, i know. but that’s what happened.”

          she’s  surprised  that  there  weren’t  more  people  employed  at  the  infirmary  .  “  yeahh  .  i  didn’t  realize  the  wait  would  be  like  actually  waiting  at  the  doctor’s  office  .  ”  at  this  point  ,  maybe  rhea  should’ve  raided  a  first  aid  kit  for  some  ibuprofen  !  she  senses  that  teddy  might  be  on  the  verge  of  hurling  so  she  quickly  grabs  a  nearby  trash  bin  and  hands  it  to  the  other  .  “  damn  what  did  you  have  ?  and  what  should  i  avoid  ?  ”  attempts  to  make  light  of  the  situation  until  someone  shows  up  .  “  it  for  sure  can’t  be  a  bout  of  sea  sickness  .  ”

                                        despite knowing that there would likely be some issues onboard, teddy didn’t think a shortage of medical staff would be one of them, especially when that’s one of the things management should’ve prioritized. but whatever, it’s not like she had the energy to be complaining about that now. “that’s the problem, i don’t think it was food. might be a stomach flu. but don’t take my word on that, i’m no doctor.” she starts going through one of the cabinets, checking each box of pills to see if anything might be of use to her. “how are none of these ibuprofen?”

niran’s  enjoying  the  atmosphere  around  him  so  far  ,  it  honestly  makes  him  feel  relaxed  .  shoulders  moving  slightly  to  the  beat  as  he  hums  ,  face full of  whatever  that’s  in  front  of  him  .  he  pauses  for  a  moment  when  he  realises  what  teddy  said  and  he  froze  .  “  is  that  what  this  is  ?  ”  he  contemplates  if  he  wants  to  gag  or  not  ,  but  he’s  had  worse  .  “  it’s  actually  …  pretty  good  ,  ”  turning  his  body  a  little  so  that  he  can  face  the  other  ,  “  have  you  tried  fried  crickets  ?  they’re  yummy  too .  ”

                                       “oh, c’mon, don’t be like that. it’s good! and it’s one of crete’s specialties.” forever a champion for food and the special, maybe more unconventional dishes around the world, teddy couldn’t help but try to urge people to be more adventurous with their food choices. “of course i have!” a grin spreads across her features, spooning another snail for him. “eat up. we’ve got so much more to try.”

it’s  been  a  hot  minute  since  zahra  glanced  at  their  phone,  too  caught  up  in  the  beautiful  scenery  that  they’re  passing  on  their  walk.  in  a  way  it’s  somewhat  overwhelming  when  there  is  so  much  to  look  at  and  not  enough  eyes.  but  the  brunette’s  words  have  zahra  focus  their  attention  down  at  the  phone  in  their  hand,  lighting  up  the  screen  up  only  to  notice  that  they  too  have  no  service.  ❝  well  …  there’s  a  good  enough  crowd  of  people  to  assume  we’re  still  in  a  tourist  area.  my  phone’s  acting  shit  too,  so  if  you  want  i  can  go  up  to  one  of  the  food  vendors  and  ask  for  directions  ??  ❞  zahra  offers  with  an  apologetic  expression.  their  phone  service  tended  to  act  up  but  they  hoped  that  being  in  an  unfamiliar  environment  that  kindness  would  be  on  their  side.  ❝  unless  you’d  rather  we  wander  and  see  where  our  feet  takes  us  for  a  bit  while  we  still  have  daylight  on  our  side.  ❞

                                     narae looks around, glad to see that they’re very much not alone, having been too occupied with trying to find signal for her phone than paying attention to her surroundings. brow quirks in curiosity, pleasantly surprised at her suggestion. “wait. you speak greek?” maybe she should try to pick up some more languages while she was on this cruise, knowing they’d be stopping at all sorts of places in the future. “no, i think the first idea was better. if we keep walking, i have a feeling we’d just get MORE lost.”

                                      “not gonna lie, i thought you’d say you’d hate this. you’re allowed to.” though her question had been posed as enthused and light, teddy had a feeling that this wasn’t going to be something of evan’s taste. but still, he was clearly gracious enough to at least partake of the food she offered. the chef popped another fried snail into her mouth, thinking about her answer as she chewed on her food. “hm, that depends on what you classify as ‘special’. i saw a flyer about a freediving class somewhere. might go and do that when i’m free. you? any plans?”

          she’s  missed  this  .  good  food  .  good  company  .  the  livelihood  .  it  felt  like  home  .  lara’s  already  helping  themselves  to  the  food  without  needing  to  be  asked  ,  nodding  in  agreement  with  teddy  .  “  definitely  !  ”  at  the  mention  of  fried  snails  ,  she’s  already  using  a  pair  of  tongs  to  grab  one  .  “  they  look  delicious  ,  ”  they  comment  ,  maneuvering  the  fork  to  separate  the  meat  from  the  shell  .  “  speaking  of  ,  have  you  tried  the  zucchini  fritters  ?  it  is  just  ––  ”  mimics  the  motion  of  a  chef’s  kiss  .  “  with  the  tzatziki  sauce  .  ”

                                  there’s a ready smile on her features, knowing exactly how the other would react to the dish before they even picked up those tongs. it was clear as day to teddy that they’d like it as much as she did and yet, she’s relieved that they share the same sentiments. “right? god, i love good food.” she forks one of the fritters, dipping it into the sauce before stuffing her face with it. she doesn’t even bother to mind her manners. “i mean, i know i can make this at home but it hits different when you’ve got a live band playing sorta old pop songs right next to you, y’know what i mean?”

                                    "according to my phone... i have no idea where i am.” usually one to know her way around places, narae finds herself in a tricky situation, unable to navigate the town she was currently in. maybe she should’ve just gone on one of those tours instead of ventured off on her own. “i think i lost signal a while back so my phone map’s kinda just stuck in the ancient theater of delphi. like, i’m pretty sure i’m not there anymore. so i was hoping you could help? u-- unless you don’t know where we are, either.”

growing  up  as  they  did  with  the  infrequent  paychecks  coming  in  from  their  mother  and  whatever  their  uncle  made  as  an  electrician,  vacations  were  viewed  more  as  a  luxury  than  a  necessity.  so  while  zahra  would  overhear  classmates  divulging  their  summer  trips  to  the  maldives  or  the  amalfi  coast,  they  mainly  stayed  at  home  figuring  out  ways  to  fill  their  time  or  even  accompany  their  mother  during  her  ghost  tours.  up  until  this  point,  scotland  has  been  the  only  place  zahra’s  gotten  to  know  with  the  occasional  work  trip  over  to  england.  this  stop  in  greece  where  the  ship  allowed  for  the  employees  to  venture  off  seemed  like  a  dream  come  true  and  zahra  felt  like  the  world  was  their  oyster.  ❝  it’s  so  beautiful  —  i  don’t  even  know  where  to  look  because  everything  is  so  wow.  ❞  darkened  hues  blink  down  at  the  snails  in  initial  trepidation  before  thinking  fuck  it.  when  in  greece,  right  ??  zahra  picks  one  up  and  plops  it  in  their  mouth.  ❝  is  that  rosemary  and  olive  oil  on  it  ??  it’s  not  as  bad  as  one  would  initially  think  once  you  get  past  the  idea  of  snails.  ❞

                                        “excuse me? ‘once you get past the idea of snails’? the idea of eating snails is GREAT, actually.” of course teddy knew not everyone would be comfortable or open to eating snails, and she was glad that zahra was. but still, some people ate it like any other normal food so she found it strange that they spoke about it like that. “it’s literally like any other food. besides, they’re not even served live! they’re fried. so, y’know... kinda like chicken.” ( though they are cooked live. but they didn’t need to know that. ) “here, try the dakos. it’s basically like a salad.”

                                         a smirk plays on her lips when she sees her companion reach for the delicacy, knowing that it wasn’t to everyone’s taste but she had a good feeling that heart would enjoy it anyway. “chewy, right?” she pops another one into her mouth like it was any old finger food, holding her glass up to the other. “to more adventures! and to trying more new food!” she clinks her glass against heart’s before waving over a waiter for another order of the snails. “you want anything else?”

                                   it wasn’t difficult for teddy to feel at home in the various towns within greece. though it was still very different from her hometown, the woman felt a sense of belonging here, almost like she had family in this town. so it isn’t so hard to believe that she’s already made friends with the locals despite being here for less than a day. she’s got a glass of raki in hand, smiling at the local bland playing their own rendition of what sounds like... call me maybe? “don’t you just love this sorta stuff? oh, here. try some of the fried snails, they’re so good.”

GETTING LOST IN A FOREIGN, BREATHTAKING COUNTRY was definitely not in miguel's bucket list. then again, he doesn't have a bucket list to begin with. but here he is. after hours of wandering around the town, solely relying to a navigation software, taking scenery photos, googling ' things to do in greece ' — the data usage drained his phone. with no other way to use to navigate his way back to the airnb he and niran booked for their stay, the only thing he can hope for now is to pray ask for help for those mythology greek gods to help him. mayhaps, hermes ? ' wasn't he a flying god or something. ' miguel asks his self, obviously being unserious with his situation right now. he knows nothing about the greece except the books he once read back in high school by rick riordan, and the pretty pics he saw on google.

he stopped on his tracks when he spotted a familiar figure, he can't really tell who from afar as he has an eyesight of a bat. "hi, i'm sorry but i'm kind of lost. do you have a power bank with you that i can borrow?" he asks, flashing a smile in hopes he don't creep the other party out. "and do you know a place that has good food and drinks?"

                                        “hm?” eyes are wide at the sudden call, turning around to see someone that seemed familiar but definitely still unknown to her. “me?” the woman gestures to herself before looking around, realizing there couldn’t have been anyone else he was talking to. peering at him for a good few seconds, she realizes where she recognizes him from. “oh! you’re from the tour, right? and the cruise? or do i have the wrong guy?” how embarrassing it would be if he said no to both those things. she’d rather crawl under a rock at the parthenon than have to face such an awkward situation.

               “i mean, i’m pretty sure i’m doing this correctly, but i’m kinda new to the job,” the bartender admitted, bashfully rubbing the back of his neck. the recipe for sex on the beach was simple enough to get even on his first try, and he was quite proud to offer that to other guests who come in not knowing what to order. “what i don’t know how to do is get away from bizarre customers like that. just last week, one offered me a giant tip if i played with them, and i was so excited to run to the pinball machines at moises,’ but i only ended up running away from the bathroom with my pants down— oh, sorry! oversharing. please don’t tell my manager.”  

                                        new... to the job? narae was already taking a mental note of the fact that this cruise was hiring people with barely any experience. that was sure to grab some attention in her article. “you mean, you’re new to bartending? how did you get this job exactly? don’t they, like, test you before hiring?” with his oversharing despite literally just meeting her, the journalist had a feeling this man would provide answers to anything she asked and more. she sips on her drink, just rum and coke, and puts it down with a soft thud. “you’re not a very bright one, are you?”

                                       “it was hooey to me. sorry.” but at least she was honest. that should count for something. narae sips on her drink, nonchalant despite his confusion. “nah, i know. sadly, your attempt was... well, it was pretty bad.” was her goal to make him feel bad? of course not. but the journalist couldn’t help but speak bluntly. she was already down, she wasn’t sure how much he could do to make her feel better. but a drink wouldn’t hurt. she wasn’t drunk ( yet ) so why not, right? “that’s very sweet of you. if i asked for the most expensive drink on the menu, would you still indulge me or am i limited to a beer?”

                                       “do you mean you’re treating me to unlimited drinks for another night?” and would that mean she’d have to meet up with her again after this? teddy doesn’t know if that’s a good deal or not. “because if you mean tonight then i don’t see how i can be the sober one. but if you mean, like, in a week or something then... how do i know you won’t just bail on me?”

                                     “oh.” well, thank goodness for that. had that been what actually happened, narae wasn’t entirely sure she had the strength to be a support system for her companion. “consider yourself lucky then. it’s not a fun feeling.” the journalist has probably only been stood up a couple of times before, and fortunately not on this ship. ( imagine how horrible that would’ve felt! ) she sighs, taking a handful of peanuts and munching on them before speaking up again. “i’m alone because i’ve yet to really make any friends here... and because my ex cheated on me. like-- god, it just sounds really pathetic when i talk about it. but yeah, that’s about it.”
