i should probably warn you guys really quickly:  the amount of muse i may have for this character on any given day is probably going to wax and wane pretty dramatically. i haven't played an evil character (especially not as truly evil as Shelob) in a really long time, and it's (thankfully) kind of a strain to do, because I am not...a giant maneating spider. So there's that.  Basically, if it ever takes me a really long time to post a starter or reply to something, you know what's up. : )

I am very tired, but Shelob was apparently very excited to talk to Gollum. Awful, belly-gnawing hunger, distracting and infuriating.The only thing she cannot kill.  For hours she has been crawling through her labyrinth, hoping for a stray orc, praying  for a stray orc, but none have come. And then there is a rustle, a light pattering of feet,  and in the moment it takes her to realize what and who it is,the muscles which have tensed to spring relax, instead, 

              "Is that you, my sweet? My sneak? And what have you brought, this time?"

      Shelob's heart is a foul, black, dusty thing, incapable of affection or even of pity.       She has devoured her own eggs and she has lured many brave, strong Men and       Elves to their deaths But her Sneak, somehow, is an exception. She has not eaten      him. She will not eat him. And she will one day pay him in full for all of the delicacies       he has brought to her. 

                    And he is the thing most like her that she has yet found. She has never been                      lonely, no. Loneliness is only weakness disguised with a pretty word. But still                                         it is nice to know something so like. 

                            "Love is a weakness indeed, my little Sneak. Best never to regard it.                                                 I never have."

   The anger and hurt that was part of parting with Sam soon changed into terror. Frodo wandered the dark cavern as he without much hope wished there was another way to the mountain. But like Sméagol said it was this way or back and there was no way he was turning back. What remained of the Fellowship was counting on him.

   It was around this time that he realized he had parted with his guide. “Sméagol!” He rapidly looked all directions looking for the former hobbit, but just as he suspected Sméagol was not there. “Sméagol!” he called once more but in vain.

   Lost and defeated Frodo slumped against the cavern walls. Now how was he suppose to find his way out? The Ring-bearer was going to attempt to try again when he was suddenly startled by another’s voice.

   Whirling around he hadn’t expect to find that he was not alone. Relieved that someone else was in this desolate place he made a move to follow her, but then after a moment’s thought he hesitated,

   ”Who are you?” He asked his tone wary.

So very close. He had even stepped forward before he stopped himself, and Shelob knew a moment's struggle in keeping herself from hissing in frustration. She was hungry, so hungry. Orcs were not, to say the least, her favorite food, and it was all she'd had in weeks. No pretty little prisoners of the prince next-door. The birds and other creatures had long fled. It had been a diet of orc, and now she was craving more. 

But Shelob was old, as old as the mountain she inhabited, and she knew that to hiss and spit and bite at this tasty little morsel while he was yet so suspicious would do little more than send him on his way. Lures did not work if one smacked the prey in the face with it.  Nice and easy, slow and steady, that was the way of it. It was a spider-silk game, delicate in the weaving and strong in the end. And it took a spider's patience to play. 

"Oh, how silly of me," she crooned, "I'm afraid my memory must be going, old thing like me. Never grow old, my dear, it isn't at all the thing. My name is Shelob. I lived in these hills before the orcs took over, and now..." she sniffed, looking about as though wary. "I try to stay out of their way, try to live best I can 'til my age finally takes me. My home is just over there - "  Her home was everywhere, but she still gestured through the caverns casually. "Have a bite to eat. And I'm sure I have an old map somewhere, I can look while you rest."

Merry knew she was in a very, very bad spot. She was very lost, nor dwarf or uncle in sight, and the way she was shaking head to toe whilst nursing a tender wound on her forehead was making it quite obvious. It hadn’t been her doing or wandering for once, they’d been ambushed and one bad step had sent her tumbling away.

She’d jumped a foot in the air when the sticky sweet voice rang behind her, and Merry turned, shuffling back and curling her arms about herself.
