Well, he failed the first time. Which means he has to succeed now, has to fulfill the mission Tony’s given him. He can’t just GIVE UP, now, not when he got so close. 

Maybe a part of him has a few doubts. Maybe a part of him is caught thinking that maybe she doesn’t have that much control over her branding as a villain, and that there’s a person underneath their fights, but there’s nothing else he can do about it. He wants to succeed! Which means he’s going to find her again. 

Admittedly, that isn’t his intention for the night-he’s just out on patrol, swinging through the city and looking out for any trouble he can put a stop to, when he catches sight of her, leaning against a pipe. She isn’t CAUSING any trouble, but it’ll eat away at him if he just leaves her there, waiting a moment before he swings into the scene, landing smoothly behind her. 

“Not exactly, but if I’m swinging ‘round the city and find you just casually standing over here? I’m gonna swing in.” He shrugs, almost too casual for when he’s trying to fight someone. “Yeah, it’s late, I was gonna finish soon actually, but then I saw you.” 

“is that so?”

she crosses her arms, beginning to take a few steps toward him. she has to admit - his persistence is pretty admirable. and she guesses she can try to understand where it comes from. her determination to stay away from people who want to take her apart and rewire her and put her in a cage? it’s a survival mindset. but, this spider guy? he did it because he had some dreamy obligation to the world. and probably s.h.i.e.l.d.

he’d MADE himself a hero. circumstance (and oscorp) had MADE her into a monster, and subsequently, a villain.

“you know, it’s gonna be the same thing over again. we do the electricity dance, you throw your gross webs at me, i break your fancy suit, you run away. this is gonna get old.” merry says, half smiling. “can’t we just talk or something instead? you tell me why you think i’m evil? cause i bet somebody told you that, and you believed them because they said they were the good guys.”

merry kinda thrived at night. not that she was really a fan of nighttime, but it was just the only time she could really be out.

it was just hitting 8:00 p.m., and dark was falling over the city skyline. lights began to pop on windows. she inhaled the warm summer air, bringing with it that charming city scent of street pizza, cigarettes, and car fuel. it was quite nice. well, nice in the loosest sense of the word.

she was resting against on a vent pipe, looking out at the other rooftops, when she spotted an unusual shape in the darkness out of the corner of her eye. merry would’ve just missed the sound of the person settling onto the gravel, had they not arrived during a lull in the traffic. it was somewhere just behind her, and the girl couldn’t help but roll her eyes.

“listen, i don’t think i know much about this hero thing, but i don’t think the hero looks to fight the villain usually?” merry asked, turning around with her eyes flaring blue, but still maintaining her relaxed stance. “it’s kinda late.”

the firmness of merry’s statement was pretty significantly undermined by her congestion. she sniffled, then went into the fridge for the orange juice. “i’m fine, i swear.”

Finally! He stoped her with his webs. He hadn’t been sure whether he’d catch her, so it was a relief that he was ABLE to. 

Everything went downhill after that. 

His eyes widened as he watched her expression twist, and although he couldn’t pinpoint EXACTLY what it was, it made his stomach drop. Fear, determination, what he thought was malice, all rolled into one as she SCREAMED. He could feel his senses running up and down his body, but he ignored them in favor of trying to figure out what was going on. He regretted that a moment later when ELECTRICITY spread throughout the room. 

Peter cried out in pain for the moment it lasted, but it didn’t stay for long, considering his enhanced strength and healing. It looked as if he’d defeated her. All he had to do was take her in but…something in him held him back. He recognized the PANIC in her eyes, and had to do something. He wouldn’t remove the web, not yet, but his heart won over his decisions. “Hey, hey, try to calm down. I’m not gonna do anything just yet.” 

“calm down? when you’re taking me in to get cut open and put away?”

merry rolled her eyes, but then cast them to the ground as she felt a rising burn in her eyes and nose. she hoped he couldn’t see how her face crumpled as she gave in to her feelings. she didn’t want to go. 

she let a small sniffle go, and shook her head. “you won. that’s pretty rare.” merry said, her tone a little rueful as a bitter laugh escaped her. “so you’re just gonna let me sit here until your s.h.i.e.l.d. buddies show up?”

1. merry and phillip have a father-daughter closer than most, out of both necessity and to the merit of phillip being kind and understanding, especially to his child.

2. merry gives phillip gifts for both mother’s and father’s day, since he plays both roles exceedingly well. this tradition came to rise once merry got into school and started doing crafts for those days. there’s a collection of macaroni art, paper ties, poorly made clay sculptures, and misshapen homemade candles.

3. they have a favorite ice cream shop, probably named after some random animal, that they’ve been visiting since merry was a toddler and phillip was still finishing school. there’s a collection of pictures of both of them over time at the same table.

4. phillip, try as he may, never quite mastered doing hair. he can do a pretty decent ponytail, maybe a braid or two if he really concentrates.

The first thing he noticed was the blue of her eyes, swirling with over what Peter could only assume was his current state. He was RELIEVED to see Merry there, hopes of rescue that he’d tried to hold on to suddenly rising again. He felt almost inadequate, being unable to escape himself, but after what they’d done, it felt impossible.

He let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding when the cuffs suddenly released from his wrists, a semblance of freedom taking over him. The next thing he knew, he felt Merry’s arms around him, and did his best to do the same with his shaking hands. He let out a small, involuntary sob as he leaned against her, before suddenly remembering WHERE they were.

”We need-we need to get out of here. Before they notice, they’ll try to get you too.”

she pulled back, shaking her head and pointing to her eyes. her smile was visibly shaky and pained.

“done. taken care of. we can go home.” merry whispered. her expression changed, and she winced, dropping onto peter’s chest. the rather recent discovery that she could overexert her powers was confusing, scary, and most of all inconvenient. a shaky breath escaped her mouth.

“...i think i’ve done too much.”

“Especially since I just dodged that really cool electric thing you just did.” 

Complimenting the enemy might not be the smartest decision, but Peter couldn’t help it! Superpowers impressed him, even now when he had ones of his own. “Almost there, but not really. Might be a mission that was passed on from them, though.” 

He quickly realized he probably SHOULDN’T be telling her this, instead watching as she curled her hand into a fist, putting his guard up as she did so. He felt his senses tingling, trusting them to warn him of whenever she might strike. 

Now! They practically screamed at him, and he ended up dodging the punch with ease, a part of him wondering what the electricity might do to his suit. “I dunno, doesn’t seem like I’m wasting my time to me!” He shot out a few webs, hoping he’d catch her. 

a little gasp escaped her as the webs came, one catching her wrist and pinning her to the wall. she was forced to her knees, 

she’d been had.

panic began to build in her throat, and memories, smells, faces, sounds that she’d barely processed when they’d happened but were emblazoned in her unconscious flooded forth. she felt her body stiffening, and she was likely fixing her attacker with a face that could kill. there was blood running down her cheek, maybe tears. she couldn’t go back, she couldn’t -

her feelings rose up out of her throat in a SCREAM, and the sound of electrical charge built before the room flashed blue again. merry hadn’t even realized she’d closed her eyes until she’d offhandedly wondered if she’d blinded herself. she forced herself to look, eyes burning and an ache settling into her body. the room was turning sideways. regardless of if her attacker had somehow dodged that, she wouldn’t be able to fight him any more.
