    ââ  PERHAPS ITâS foolish of him to be happy â she could have used the word âweâ as a general term, or perhaps she was using it to mean the Shepherds.Â
    But a fool in love will often hear what he wants to hear, and suddenly his mind is full to burst with images of them fighting side by side, bringing peace to the world, and most of all, a life in the better world they worked so hard to create. Itâs selfish, o h, but itâs so selfish to think her words were meant for him alone when they could mean any number of things. But there is no stopping his naive imagination and racing heartbeat, and though he swore to himself his feelings would remain known to him alone, he indulges that greedy heart  of his for just a moment. As chastely as he can manage â no intertwining fingers or gentle caresses â he takes her hands in his own and looks straight into her eyes. He hopes he isnât blushing, hopes his emotions arenât scrawled across the look in his eyes or too plain to see, even though it feels as such.
     It canât hurt, right? Friends do this all the time, and no one is around to see anyway. ( Never mind that friends certainly donât have their hearts flutter and breath hitch and cheeks flush at the touch of the otherâs hand. )
     â We can, and we will. And when itâs all over â â
    FRIENDS, he reminds himself, though it leaves a bitter taste in his mouth. Friends donât talk about the life theyâll live together once peace returns. He stops himself for a moment before he makes a fool of himself, and chooses words more palatable.
    â â when itâs over, weâll finally get a chance to breathe, wonât we? â
