The freaskish, odious stares seem to follow me about the room while I pick up glasses and clean the polished wood over and over again. Far too many of them are from the generation who say things like large whiskey or house wine, who drink their gin with tonic but always slim, never plain, but who probably scoff at the low calorie draught pepsi.
PC culture gone mad, they'll say, and I tell them how the company saves a fortune on sugar tax. It's capitalism you're angry with, not some abstract notion of social justice that's taking away your god given right to be unhealthy.
Technically you're taking drugs; socially acceptable, bottled for your convenience, at a venue that's legally allowed to deal them to you, playing it's part in thousands of premature, preventable deaths a year from slow motion poisoning and destruction of your vital organs. When I had my first big phase of recreational sleeping tablet use, I had to do the rounds of as many different pharmacies as I could, so the first place either forgot or didn't figure out what I was doing.
I get funny looks in the supermarket from people buying half pure fermented poison with the flowers on the label. I have to explain why sugar free pepsi isn't a ploy to get schoolboys to wear makeup. Make this make sense.
Escape shouldn't be something that needs social approval. You can have your large brandy, house wine and half a bitter shandy. You can throw broken darts at the board with the broken score counter and too many holes in the doors. You can put Status Quo on the jukebox, or that one Rod Stewart song with too many mandolin riffs. You can even buy bottles of full fat coke at the inflated price, because your precious Tory government saw fit to sneak in another tax on bring poor.
When I've poured your poison, cleared your table and filled the fridges, don't mind me whilst I take prescription drugs with someone else's name on, eat some cake with added herbs, drink my sugar free drinks and watch TV with English subtitles, actors with different coloured skin, characters romancing their own gender, or science fiction about feelings and friendship.
