"I wish all girls loved to work out like you do."
Today, upon walking into the gym, a trainer jokingly called out to me, āMan, weāre gonna make you take a vacation from coming here!ā
I shot back, āNah dude, I pay my dues here and Iām gonna make it worth my while!āĀ
He kicked back in his chair, looked at me and said, āNow thereās motivation. Why isnāt everyone motivated like that? Youāre in here every day, kicking ass.ā
I said, āItās actually my rest day. On my rest days all I do is paddle around in the pool and sit in the sauna until my DOMS are gone.ā
He laughed and leaned forward. āItās your rest day? And youāre still here! Youāre fucking serious. Man, I wish my girl was motivated like that. I wish my girl would come work out with me every day. Why isnāt my girl like that?ā I forced a grimacing smile and walked away.
I thought about his words through my entire swim and for the rest of my day. Itās true. As a whole, heās right - the average girl doesnāt show a consistent, deep motivation to kick ass in the gym day after day, month after month, year after year. Apparently that makes him sad. And he doesnāt understand that heās a tiny individual part of a huge problem.
On a cultural level, women are taught that the only reasons to work out, get in shape, etc. are to ālook goodā and/or impress others. Women are not taught to prize ability and athletic performance. Women are encouraged to hit the gym to change something they donāt like, but rarely are they encouraged to improve on something they already (should) like. If a woman complains that her thighs are big, sheās told to hit the endless cardio and slim them down, but never to lift weights or run sprints and put those amazing thighs to use!
Women are not urged to set ability-oriented goals. Women are raised to judge āprogressā on appearance. Women are systematically taught to āwork out and get hotā, but not to train to become healthy and powerful! Therefore, real progress is never truly gained and motivation withers. Body-hate and external motivation does not last. Teaching a woman that she is nothing more than an imperfection to be changed for the viewing pleasure of others is not the way to make her beautiful, healthy, and happy. Help her learn to become strong, fast, and proud - for herself! - and the motivation will last a lifetime.
The fitness industry is fully aware how much money there is to be made in selling āsolutionsā to those who have been taught they are obligated to change themselves. Media, advertising, nutritionists andĀ dietitians, gyms andĀ trainers - they are all guilty of perpetuating the cycle. When a woman visits a personal trainer the first time, sheās asked what her weight goals are and what she wants to āchange about herselfā. Sheās bombarded and broken down under constant insinuation that sheās not good enough yet but maybe she can be good enough if she puts enough time, effort, and money into changing everything thatās wrong with her. A woman cannot enter a fitness setting without it being assumed that sheās there to āget hotā to attract a mate, or to impress someone else. Sheās not conceptually allowed to be there just to feel good, get healthier, or get stronger for herself.
If this society wants to see a generation of women who are truly enthusiastic about fitness - help give women a real reason to train.Ā Stop focusing on subjective appearance things that a woman has been conditioned to feel obligated to hide and change, and instead encourage her to find something she loves, something she wants to accomplish. Instead of āhelpingā a woman lose her ālove handlesā, ask her if thereās some physical feat she never thought sheād be able to do, and help her do it!Ā Bros of the gym, if yāall want your ladies to come work out with you, help show her how powerful and proud she can be, instead of keeping her weak and bored with 3lb handweights while you bench 225.
For the human race to meet our true potential of health, strength, and wellbeing - this cycle needs to change on a cultural level. But first, it needs to change on an individual level. This goes out to everyone, every single one of you. Be all YOU can be, never let anyone tell you otherwise, and help encourage others to do the same.
Warrior, out.
Remember ladies, 1, uou donāt sweat as much when youāre super toned plus you get to just wear a sports bra. Pshhaw to shirts. 2. And smiling isnāt allowed if you got a little bit of extra adipose tissue.
You are absolutely right. These kinds of pictures annoy me too.
You know what's kinda sad?
How much we prioritize aesthetics over performance. Not to hate on bodybuilding, but it seems like every bikini competitor on Instagram has 43,000 followers, while girls deadlifting 4 plates have 350.
Both things are great. If youāre working towards a goal, thatās fantastic. If you are trying to better yourself, power to ya.
I just donāt get (well, I guess I do) why people go apeshit over a picture of a tiny model with āabzā and a ābooty,ā but yet other girls who are putting up huge numbers or performing these awesome feats of athleticism are kinda overlooked.
I am just so much more impressed by someone doing ring handstand push-ups than striations and shit like that.
It upsets me that the fitness industry is so incredibly shallow and disordered sometimes, despite the fact that itās supposed to be about āhealth.ā
I feel like the reason why so many people like Rhonda Rousey is because she bridges the gap between those worlds? Sheās the kinda girl that gives guys hard ons but also makes their dicks retract back inside of their bodies out of fear.
Just a reminder, that no matter what you read on tumblr:
Losing weight is hard
Changing your lifestyle or fitness levels is hard
You will make mistakes
You will learn a lot about yourself and those around you
Its OK and normal to be scared that you will fail - lets talk about it
Its OK to be honest about your fearsĀ - lets talk about it
Donāt be afraid to change your method or direction if its not working
You donāt have to pretend your journey is easy to make your followers happy Be humble. Love yourself.Ā
āI donāt want to build muscles, I just want to have abs, nice arms, a round booty, and toned legs.āĀ

Feeling good this morning
Hey runners (and walkers)! Thought this might be helpful :)
OH MY GOD
Once I realized that my eating is about my health and getting all the nutrients my body needs and not about losing weight I started ordering healthy food not because Iām trying to reduce calories but because I am trying to add nutrients.
Today I actually felt like I lift and my whole outfit coordinated

danielle u look SO amazing in the pic u just posted of u wearing the tight skirt! ur hard work has seriously paid off! u look killer!! :)
Dude itās so amazing. Counting my macros has been the most life changing thing for my body. Itās so cool. Flexible dieting is what Iāve needed my whole life. I could go on for hours about how much better j feel. And itās not like calorie counting where t makes me guilty. Itās this weird fun thing. And food and eating hasnāt been fun for me for over 4 years of struggling. Itās amazing. I notice such differences in my overall life. Amazing. And losing weight while eating more is just sooooo great! Itās so cool what happens when you take care of your body.
