Men do not care how nobly they live, but only how long, although it is within the reach of every man to live nobly, but within no man’s power to live long.
Seneca, Moral Letters to Lucilius
The outstanding negative quality of the totalitarian elite is that it never stops to think about the world as it really is and never compares the lies with reality.
Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism
Loneliness is like starvation: you don’t realize how hungry you are until you begin to eat.
Joyce Carol Oates, Faithless

Itachi wanted to say she was praising him a bit too highly, that he could in no way be responsible for such an era- especially not with his current position. An era of peace, really?
That was a bit much.
Yet he managed a chuckle, deciding not to pursue that particular subject. This new thread of conversation was far more comfortable for the Uchiha.
“Robin-san, that’s hardly fair now, is it?” he said, with light humour in his tone. “Are you punishing me for making you wait for five minutes?”
Or that was his guess, in any case. A maximum of ten, because he couldn’t imagine anyone being that early for such a casual engagement. He was surprised that his invitation had been accepted so warmly in the first place, to be perfectly honest.
“I suppose I do have at least one story I could share, but it’s not as exciting you think. I’m still relatively new to my role as an Auror. –Shall we order something first before I start, though?”
Robin enjoyed history, only because it offered her a little insight into what could possibly occur in the future. She liked how history often had patterns that all magical creatures and non-magical alike, should learn from. History was to be revered… and if history had taught her anything, it was that people like Itachi only came once in every era there existed. These were the people who shined through the pages, the movers and shakers of the world… the kind that didn’t even know how remarkable they would be until the time came.
But, she decided with a smile, he didn’t quite want the spotlight on him just yet. At least… she was happy to be sharing his company for the moment.
The dark-haired woman glanced over at him, amused. “Ah, but it was an extra fifteen minutes that I was waiting- the best fifteen minutes of reading I’ve had in a long time.”
She was only half-joking. However, she was also… not willing to share the work she did for her rather cruel new, employer. Itachi would hardly be impressed.
She ordered a stronger coffee and a slice of cheesecake and waited for it to arrive before resting her chin on one palm.
“I knew you would have a good story.”
koredesaigoda:
Itachi had the grace to lower his gaze, not quite able to immediately process such high praise from the elder. Really, he was honestly anything but.
“Ah… anou…” Itachi said, momentarily slipping into his Japanese mindset, a touch embarrassed. “Thank you very much, Robin-san, but it really isn’t anything. I just do what I can.”
That being said, he already had plans to one day rise to a political position, if at all possible; many of those in his line of work had the advantage of being given priority for the role of Minister of Magic. Perhaps one day, he could… There were so many things that he’d like to do to ensure the well-being of both the wizarding and Muggle communities. Even if the former had essentially been forced underground due to conflict with the latter.
“I think they really were too,” he said, moving away from his embarrassment to focus on the subject of history. History of Magic had always been one of his favourite classes at Hogwarts, despite how the majority tended to abhor it. “It must be fascinating to be able to uncover relics from the past. I almost envy you.
“Do you have any interesting stories about your adventure as a Curse Breaker?”
"You give yourself too little credit," the elder replied calmly, a touch amused by the sudden display of shyness from the young boy.
He was just as humble as he always had been at 11 years old. She was glad that being an Auror had not robbed him of any of the kindness and good qualities she had seen him with.
She was sure that Itachi was the kind of person who silently worked hard and did a lot more than other people were aware of. He probably thought even that was too little.
When their orders arrived, she hid another smile behind her cup. Her line of thought was along the same lines as Itachi. She also thought that he could be in the running for Minister of Magic. With the way things proceeded... if he caught enough dark wizards...
"An era of peace... it sounds nice."
There had been many eras, as discussed in the very subject the two seemed to be fond of: A history of magic. She even managed a little grin.
"I don't think I have as many exciting stories to share as you have. But I suppose I could share one if you promise to start with yours."
koredesaigoda:
Something he had noticed as well, but again decided not to say a word of it. It was hardly any of his business, and for all he knew, it wasn’t unusual for her to wear anything so feminine.
It wasn’t as though he had stayed in contact with her throughout all these years.
Allowing the door to fall softly shut, Itachi stepped into the teashop, already feeling quite at home within the establishment. There was simply something about teashops that he found exceedingly soothing. This oughtn’t come as too much of a surprise to anyone who knew him; goodness knew he spent enough time at such premises whenever he was able to.
With a smile and a nod at the owner, Itachi settled himself in the seat opposite Robin. Although that strange suspicion was still nestled inside of him, he did not find it abhorrent or in any way off-putting in the least.
Instead, he was curious.
“I’ve been quite well, thank you for asking,” he said. He considered his next words, finding it difficult to utter his reasons without coming across as pretentious. “It’s hard to say… I’ve always wanted to help people, so I decided to do it in a way I can. Might as well put what I’ve learned in Defense Against the Dark Arts to good use, ah? Does my career choice seem that unusual, Robin-san?
“Can’t say I’m surprised you chose to be a Curse Breaker.”
The dark-haired woman could see why he had picked such a place. The atmosphere in the teashop was relaxed with only a quiet, comfortable hum of noise surrounding them. It was a place that they could relax and... be themselves. The tension Robin always felt in social situations drained away from her entirely. She need not worry about saying or doing the wrong thing- after all, such a situation hardly called for dining etiquette.
And they were talking about things were deeply personal to the pair of them. Their jobs and what they did.
Her lips curved wider this time, pleased that he was doing well. And impressed by his answer.
"When you explain it like that, it doesn't seem unusual at all. You really do embody your house, Itachi," she said after a while.
He was everything good and noble about the world of magic.
"Hm, I suppose not. I have always liked studying curses and ancient runes. And the wizards of the past have proven to be very impressive indeed."
It had been good to be referred to as a Curse Breaker, as opposed to the curse her aunt thought she was.
koredesaigoda:
Itachi smiled at the compliment, well aware of how odd it must have appeared for him to own such a pet.
“Thank you,” he said. “It was a gift.” From a friend.
With that said, he opened the door to the teashop and stepped to the side, allowing Robin to step in first. While he said nothing of it, he couldn’t help but feel as though there was a little more to the elder’s fondness than he had initially thought.
Surely… he was imagining things? Flattering himself, more like. Even when they had been in the same school they only interacted with one another a handful of times.
That and their age gap. She had been in her final years at Hogwarts whilst Itachi had just started his. A little junior hardly mattered.
“How have you been? I hope I didn’t keep you waiting for too long.”
It was odd, but Robin took it in her stride. She secretly liked cute things, not that anyone who looked at her cool personality would guess that. She certainly didn't wear unicorn ornaments or pixie-slippers. More like skulls and eyeballs, this girl... except that she had worn something a little prettier today.
"I see."
Nothing else was said, but she quietly filed the information away for her own amusement.
He was a gentleman, as he always had been all those years ago and allowed her inside first. This time, she noticed that they both met at eye level now, instead of the way she had towered over him in the past.
When they got seated, she shook her head. "Not at all. I was reading while I waited."
She casually brushed her jeans and glanced back up over at him.
"I've been well, what of yourself? Aurors have a rather dangerous job, don't they?" A slight incline of her head as she studied him.
"You don't appear the reckless type, how did you decide upon this choice?"
koredesaigoda:
As was his nature, Itachi made certain to arrive at least fifteen minutes before his appointment with Robin– yet despite the measure he had taken to avoid the risk of running late, he was already greeted by the sight of the elder.
Robin was waiting for him outside of the tea shop, and if he had to hazard a guess, it did not seem as though she had just arrived.
“Robin-san? You’re early.” Talk about putting his Japanese punctuality to shame.
Robin had got to the venue at least thirty or twenty minutes earlier than their planned meeting time. Truth be told... she did not have much happening in her life apart from work and writing to Saul. So she had actually been waiting for the afternoon to arrive.
Rose Lee Teabag was a rather nice place- nothing compared to those glamourous, underground casinos in Egypt- but still... very sweet. She could see the rose in the stained glass window subtly alter its colour due to magic.
She glanced away from the window and towards the younger boy, offering him a smile.
"Oh, I suppose. But I wanted to leave myself with plenty of time. You have a cute owl, Itachi.”
If you consider a woman less pure after you’ve touched her, maybe you should take a look at your hands.

[Owl post] 3 o'clock this Wednesday afternoon at Rose Lee Teabag, Diagon Alley. How does that sound to you?
Ah, a message already? She smiled at the little owl that had delivered the message. It wouldn’t let her send the reply without a treat.
“Alright… alright… goodness, you’re not something I expected him to use.”
She petted the little owl and tied her agreement to its leg.
That sounds good. See you.-Robin
koredesaigoda:
Too memorable to forget?
It was as though he was not taken aback enough as it was. Feeling another flare of mild embarrassment, Itachi quickly regained his composure, wondering if Robin had at all thought through what she had just said. It was not as though they had been especially close to each other in school. With a four to five year gap and the fact that they did not share the same Hogwarts House, Itachi’s interactions with Robin had been few and far between at best.
The few times they had conversed, it had been about their shared love for books.
“I’m glad to hear that,” he said, thankful to have recovered from his surprise. There was no need for any of that during such a simple exchange. “Ah, if I may… May I have your address? For owling purposes. It’d be easier to contact you then if anything comes up.”
He supposed he could help move things along.
After procuring a small notebook and a pen, he extended them to her. “I have some time this Wednesday afternoon.”
Fortunately, Robin was rather cool about her word choice. She had meant what she said and would not retract her statement even if it meant that he appeared a touch embarrassed about it. Perhaps he thought it too strange, to hear something like that from his senior at school – especially from all those years ago.
But she did mean it.
Nico Robin… loved books. And to find someone who genuinely shared that love with her… it was too good to simply let go without any acknowledgement.
The woman nodded, taking his notebook and pen with a mild smile. “You use pen and paper like non-magical people… it’s nice to see, too.”
She wrote down her new address, a room at the Leaky Cauldron in London, and returned his items back to him.
“Right now, I am staying at the Leaky Cauldron… I always find a room there in London. Otherwise… I just stay in Egypt with the rest of the Cursebreakers in some temporary accommodation.”
“I will meet you on Wednesday, until then... take care. ”
For something so small as a cup of tea... she found that she was looking forward to that Wednesday.
Robin loved books... and she realised now that she also tended to be fond of those people that cared for them as much as she did.
You know, you can steel your heart against any kind of trouble, any kind of horror. But the simple act of kindness from a complete stranger will unstitch you.

“I’m sure it was. I hope you’ve taken up owling him; he sounds like a friend you ought to keep.” There was a touch of embarrassment at her praise; honestly, he didn’t think she would have remembered him, let alone recognised him. He had been… how old when she left the school? Twelve? Thirteen? Most would not have been able to place his face with that of his child self’s at first glance. “And thank you. It was nothing, really. To be honest I’m surprised you even remember me.”
About four years older than him, Itachi had always seen her as one of the nicer Seventh years. Well, the one Seventh year who had been nicest to him, in any case.
Most didn’t seem overly pleased with the fact that he could readily compete with them on their own subjects.
“Send my regards to him then, if you see him again. He can be a bit of a handful, but he’s reliable.” …
“I know you have things to do and I don’t want to take too much of your time, but what do you think about having tea one of these days? We can do a bit of catching up.” A wider smile. “You can tell me more about Saul.”
"He's a really good friend." Her first one, if she recalled correctly.
The dark-haired woman glanced at her hands then, embarrassed. "I owl him in reply... but never quite know what to say."
Robin had always been aloof, preferring to read, rather than write - but she hoped she was getting better. Saul had said she had, even delighted by the fact that she had found some friends. He'd roared with laughter when she'd said he was her favourite.
The dark-haired witch looked up then. "But you are too memorable to forget."
He had clearly made his mark.
And she was happy to find that he was still as every bit as kind as he had been at school.
"Ah, alright then," she filed away Killian Jones' name in the back of her mind and then was about to say her goodbyes when... he invited her for tea.
Her smile widened a touch. "I would like that. I have some time these few days, as I won't be heading to Egypt until Autumn while they initiate the new recruits. And... you can tell me about your Auror training."

The dark-haired girl could say the same for herself. Hogwarts had been a brilliant sanctuary for the young orphan.
After she had graduated, she had been so eager to explore ancient ruins and go abroad, that she had even completed some less than savoury tasks under a mysterious employer.
“I hardly do much. I only translate and decipher runes,” she replied modestly. But she didn’t think she enjoyed the fact that her teams were directly responsible for not only triggering ancient curses… but looting them.
“I met up with an old friend in Romania though. It was good to see him. If you see a giant with a brown hat, he’s my friend, Saul.”
“Only, you say,” he said, with mild amusement in his tone. “If I recall correctly, you were the best student in your year. Graduated with the highest grades, no?”
Much like himself, Robin was a bit of a mystery in school, if not even more so. Whilst Itachi could often be seen up and about when he wasn’t studying, Robin could hardly ever be found. Every single time he had seen her, though, she had had her nose in a book.
Always reading, that one.
“An old friend, though… That’s interesting. There aren’t many giants around these days. How did you two meet?” After a moment of thought, he added, “Do you happen to know a fellow cursebreaker called Killian?”
Oh... he remembered that? She didn't think it had been anything special, really? All she had been good at was reading and memorising the information. Nevertheless, she smiled.
"I've heard that you completed your training very quickly too. You make a fine Auror."
He had always been smarter than his peers, reading books that only seventh years could decipher. The only reason she had even kept up with his name in school was because he often checked out the same sorts of books that she did.
"He came to visit my village one day. Back when I didn't know I was even a witch," she smiled at the memory. She had often been called a witch but never realised she had magic until he explained it to her.
"We became friends. He explained that not all giants are as brutal or uncaring as wizards think. It was good to see him again."
He'd been so proud of her graduating from Hogwarts.
"Killian.... Jones? Ah, yes. I do know of him. He's a new graduate, I believe.”
oharanscholar replied to your post “Ahh… so you went down the Auror route? You could have been a good…”
“Yes, it has. I’ve been working in Egypt for quite some time,” she replied with a soft smile. He always tended to make this name known- even after they had graduated. “I see you are fitting in well to life after Hogwarts.”
“I am, though I can’t say that I don’t miss our old school.” It was hard not to, despite finding himself years ahead of his classes. “So I take it that you’re a cursebreaker now?”
The dark-haired girl could say the same for herself. Hogwarts had been a brilliant sanctuary for the young orphan.
