The rich tradition of Chinese embroidery
This is an appealing publication, presented in actrattive format. It contains much helpful and enlightening information and the positive aspects of the book are reinforced by the touching enthusiasm of the author, an assistant professor in the Costume Research Section of the Institute of History, part of the Academy of Social Sciences of China. With the possible exception of porcelain, the applied arts of China from the late Imperial period to the present day are poorly researched by both Western and Chinese scholars. This book, emanating from a learned Chinese institution, is certainly timely, especially as the small domestic embroideries under discussion are found in many museum collections and private homes throughout the British Isles and North America. A historical introduction forms the first section of the book. It attemps to place the embroideries shown in colour plates in the second section in a comprehensible context.
