lu was out running some errands and decided to stop into a cafe that caught her eye. the woman could always go for some coffee – even if she was already on her second fix – and food sounded good, too. as she walked in, she immediately spotted olivia. she was about to say hi until she noticed the girl was talking to someone else; however it didn’t sound like a friendly conversation. it sounded heated, like the other was verbally assaulting olivia, and lu wasn’t going to take it. she walked over to the two, “hey liv, is everything okay? do you know them?” lu asked as she gently put her hand on the girl’s shoulder. she then looked over at the person attacking olivia, giving them a dirty look, “what’s your problem? got nothing better to do then start shit with random people?”

olivia !

olivia  had  learned  long  ago  that  tears  did  not  aid  those  that  were  under  attack  .  for  some  reason  ,  it  just  added  fuel  to  the  aggresors  fire  and  damn  ,  had  she  learned  that  the  hard  way  .  still  ,  for  someone  as  sensitive  as  her  to  hold  back  red  hot  tears  that  threatened  to  fall from  her  hazel  hues  ,  took  a  toll  time  and  time  again  .  of  course  ,  this  was  not  the  first  time  she’d  experienced  one  of  these  encounters  .  she  knew  there  was  no  use  in  defending  herself  ,  her  screams  would  only  fall  on  deaf  ears  .  no  one  CARED  that  she  wasn’t  her  brother  .  no  one  cared  that  she’d  worked  her  ass  of  since  she  was  barely  a  teen    to   shake  the  reputation  that  she’d  inherited  .  and  god  forbid  she  even  try  to  advocate  for  her  brother  .  all  she  could  really  do  was  stand  there  ,  gripping  her  coffee  cup  firmly  ,  jaw  clenched  .  she  wanted  to  feel  relief  the  second  lu  stepped  in  ,  but  instead  she  felt  dread  .   ❛  lu  ,  no  .  .  .  it’s  okay  .   ❜  it  wasn’t  .  it  was  never  okay  .  but  admitting  as  much  was  useless  .   ❛  i  was  actually  on  my  way  out  .   ❜  she  cleared  her  throat  ,  offering  a  meek  smile  for  her  friend  and  a  stern  glance  in   the  strangers  direction  .   ❛  thanks  though  .   ❜

mornings had a certain routine to them, her latte and morning book, or rather people watching was an important part of it. the conversations she had with olivia was another, one that she had started looking forward to. 

she was already settled at a small table in the corner in the coffee shop by the time the other woman walked in. with a spring in her step, kat dodged another patron to reach olivia. “morning!” she tapped the other on the shoulder to catch her attention. “thank god you’re here or i might’ve actually had to start reading whatever russian book i was talked into buying.”

mornings  were  NOT  her  thing  .  where  some  jumped  out  of  bed  eager  to  take  on  the  day  ,  olivia  lived  on  the  opposite  side  of  that  spectrum  ,  grumbling  as  she  peeled  herself  out  of  bed  after  long  sleepless  nights  .  thankfully  ,  by  the  time  she  made  it  to  the  local   coffee  shop  for  her  much  needed  dose  of  caffeine  ,  she  was  far  less  grumpy   and  actually  looking  forward  to  spending  time  with  her  friend  .  like  clockwork  ,  kat’s  familiar  voice  pulled  her  out  of  her  thoughts  ,  coaxing  a  bright  smile  onto  her  lips  .   ❛   morning  !  sorry  i’m  late   ,   i’m  glad  you  didn’t  take  that  plunge  just  yet  ,  as  much  as  i  do  appreciate  russian  literature  ?  i  had  a  rough  start  today  but  i’m   here  !  how  has  your  morning  been   ?   ❜

april !

how april so wished that the takeout at archie’s was quicker, easier – there weren’t many fine establishments in the town, but al’s still managed to pale in comparison. although april was well-aware that the other’s remark was… more of a retort than anything, she still felt compelled to add, “ it became political ? michelle obama turned the pyramid into a plate ? ” which made so much more sense. the woman’s following comment, however icy it was meant to be ( get it ? ), still brought upon the realization that she was right: there was absolutely nothing good on the menu ! so, for all intents and purposes, her purpose immediately changed as she came up with the most brilliant idea any human has ever had. “ actually, ” she began, placing unnecessary emphasis on the word, “ your recommendation sounds perfect. do you have any other ones that, like, also border on violating the food pyramid ? ” and she meant it ! just not for herself !

though  she  can  recognize  that  the  exchange  isn’t  outwardly  hostile  ,  olivia  somehow  manages  to  feel  mildly  confused  at  the  turn  the  conversation  took  .  with  nothing  to  add  to  the  POLITICAL  controversy  of  the  nutritional  variation  ,  the  brunette just  shrugged  and  shook   head  ,  clearly  conveying  her  ignorance  concerning  the  ordeal  .     ❛  forget  skipping  the  class  ,  i’m  pretty  sure  i  surpressed  that  entire  thing  .  go  figure  .   ❜  she  couldn’t  hold  back  the  soft  smile  that  stretched  across  her  soft  lips  ,  unsure  of  whether  or  not   she  was  being  serious  .   ❛  i  mean  ,  i  could  suggest  air  but  i’m  pretty  sure  that’s  still  free  ?   ❜

“  it  really  is  a  tiring  gig   .   don’t  know  how  ya  do  it   .  ”  if  emre  alkan  could  be  anything  but  sarcastic  around  olivia   ,   no  one  would  know  it  .   he  wasn’t  sure  what  it  was  about  her            the  way  her  hair  always  seemed  to  be  perfectly  in  place  or  how  she  walked  with  an  air  of  superiority   ,   whether  she  knew  it  or  not   (  must  have  been  her  excellent  posture   )            but  he  enjoyed  pissing  her  off   .   and  since  he  seemed  twenty-five  years  too  old  to  randomly  mess  up  a  girl’s  hair   ,   he  would  have  to  stick  to  what  he  did  best   :  smart  ass  remarks   .  but  even  then   ,  with  the  endless  back  and  forth   ,    he  would  have  to  admit  the  obvious   .   the  woman  was  good  at  her  job   .  

following  her  questions   ,   he  arched  a  firm  brow  .   “  was  gonna  go  introduce  myself  to  roman  kekoa  .  figure  owning  a  popular  business  in  a  small  town  would  make  ya  privy  to  things   .  things  like  who  harley  mason  had  been  hangin’  with  lately   ;   current  party  excluded   .   been  trying  to  track  down  this  guy  she  has  history  with   ,   but  shit   ,  every  time  i  get  somewhere   ,   he’s  gone  .  ”   emre  cringed   ,   the  man  all  too  frustrated  at  the  concept  of  investigating   .   he  wasn’t  a  detective   .  he  had  a  fucking  podcast  !   give  him  research  ,   and  he  would  excel   .   but  an  actual  murder  case  ?   how  did  anyone  ever  get  any  damn  sleep  ?

❛   we   recommend  ample  doses  of  sex  ,  coffee  and   sarcasm  to  make  it  through  the  week  .  seems  to  help  enough  .   ❜   the  petite  girl  muttered  back  mindlessly  ,  her  attention  stolen  away  by  the  deli  worker  that  suddenly  resurfaced  with  her  hefty  order  ,  winning   a  bright  smile  on  her  part  .  as  she  collected   the   sandwiches  (  specifically  making  a  mental  note  to  set  aside  emre’s  )  her  gaze  wandered  over  to  him  as  she  slowly  nodded  appreciatively  .  there  it  was  again  ,  the  reason  why  she’d  taken  to  the  cocky  man  so  easily  .  she  enjoyed  the  company  of  smart  dedicated  people  .  regardless  of   what  many  could  try  and  say  about  him  ,  mainly  expressing  their  discomfort  with  the  way  he  chose  to  shake  them  out  of  their  blissful  state  of  ignorance  ,  no  one  could  deny  he  was  incredibly  bright  .  about  as  cunning   as   he  was  tenacious  .   ❛  yeah  ,  TEDDY’S  boss  .  he’s  nice  ,  i’ve  seen  him  grab  lunch  at   al’s  occasionally  ,  if  that  helps  .  ah  ,  that’s  the  slippery  slope  i’m  all  to  familiar  with   .  .  .  good  luck  !  want  to  grab   a  drink  tonight  ,  double  down  and  see  if  we  can  catch  him  behind  the  bar  ?  if  you  don’t  get  to  him  earlier  .  i  know  we  already  took  him  in  for  questioning  but  i  an  almost  guarantee  it  got  us  nowhere  .  ❜

       “i see how it is, you injure me and then slap a compliment plaster on top. i’m waiting for you to ask me for something now. just letting you know now, i’m too broke to loan you jack shit.” teddy tries to remember the last time he dated… it has been a few years. especially since- he doesn’t want to think about it. attachments weren’t his thing, he went wherever the party took him and that meant leaving people behind or people leaving him behind. best to not get attached. though olivia had to ruin that rule since teddy has taken on the big brother role as of late. “you want me to say something cliche?” he clears his throat dramatically. “it’ll come when you least expect it.” it’s a bunch of crap but- he’s here to lighten the situation. he slides the drink to olivia and hums. “i don’t remember most of it and that’s how i like it.”

olivia  rolls  her  eyes  playfully  at  his  retort  ,  knowing   full  well  by  this  point  he  was  only  joking  .  afterall  ,  they’d  run  into  eachother  in  situations  where  she  was  usually  bailing  him  out  of  some  petty  charge  or  another  ,  she   had  no  doubt  if  she  was  truly  ever  in  the  middle  of  a  delicate  situation  or  in  need  of  help  ,  he’d  do  SOMETHING  to  help  out  .  or  maybe  that  was  just  her  blind  faith  in  humanity  clouding  her  vision  .  ❛  your  pockets  are  safe  tonight  ,  teddy  .  i  just  know  how  to  push  your  buttons  .  ❜  the  girl  is  torn  between  laughing  or  simply  nodding  to  accept  the  age  old  advice  that  had  been  flung  her  way  time  and  time  again  ,  opting  for  the  first  option  merely  due  to  the  person  it  came  from  .  of  course  the  effort  was  appreciated  but  they  both  knew  what  would  inevitably  happen  come  next  weekend  .  the  dashingly  gorgeous  young  detective  would  begrudgingly  re-download  the  many  dating  apps  she  avidly  criticized  ,  match  with  some  poor  excuse  for  a  boy  with  a  dangerous  smile  because  her  daddy  issues  were  about  as  prevalent  as  they  were  poorly  concealed  ,  and she’d  roll  into  the  bar  .  .  .  ready  for  teddy’s  judgement  and  timely  rescue  .  it  was  their  THING  .  ❛  hey  ,  we  didn’t  run  into  eachother  where  I  work  so  yeah  ,  i’d  say  that  sounds  pretty  succesful  .  cheers  to  that  .  i’ll  add  that  to  the  list  of  things  i’m  officially  celebrating  tonight  .  ❜

     “wow-” teddy brings a hand to his heart as if he has been shot. he even stumbles a little for effect. “shots fired in the first five minutes? i would be proud of i wasn’t so injured.” he rubs the spot over his heart and lets out a low whistle before letting his hand drop. he stands, grabbing more glasses and setting them up on the bar. “swiping right can get pretty tiring.” teddy dabbled in tinder for hookups but he can do that just as easily at any of the parties in town. he isn’t looking for love like the other. “damn, you insult me and now you don’t even say please?” he acts insulted but makes his way around the bar to work on her drink.

amid  soft  giggles  ,  the  younger  woman  scrunches  her  nose  and  shakes  her  head  quickly  ,  following  his  childish  antics  happily  .  ❛  what  can  i  say  ,  i  learned  from  the  best  .  ❜  the  brunette  slid  onto  one  of  the  available  bar  stools  directly  in  front  of  him  ,  a  short  huff  of  agreeance brushing  past  her  plump  lips  .  it  wasn’t  so  much  the  swiping  that  she  didn’t  enjoy  ,  that  seemed  to  be  the  most  enjoyable  part  of  the  entire  experience  .  unfortunately  ,  she  just  seemed  to  have  the  worst  radar  in  dating  history  and  landed  the  worst  possible  dates  in  the  history  of  all dating  .  ❛  someday  soon  i’ll  just  have  to  surrender  to  the  inevitable  ,  it’s  just  NOT  going  to  happen  for  me  .  my  poor  madre  might  be  rolling  around  in  her  grave  now  that  i’ve  admitted  defeat  but  i  can’t  help  it  .  i’m  tired  .  and  busy  .  ❜  olivia  offered  another  bright  smile  as  an  unspoken  ‘  please  ’  ,  leaning  against  the  bar  as  she  watched  him  pour  her  poison  of  choice  into  a  glass  ,  ❛  how’s  YOUR  week  been  ?  ❜

he  bit  his  lip   ,   actively  trying  to  stop  himself  from  saying  something  inappropriate   (   i.e.  i’ve  got  something  you  can  eat   )   .   while  he  hated  to  admit  it   ,   he  needed  her   .   having  someone  inside  the  department  was  a  fucking  gift   ,   and  he  sure  as  shit  wasn’t  about  to  ask  for  a  receipt   .    “   yeah   ,   yeah   .   apologies   .    ”    the  lack  of  sincerity  was  obvious   ,   even  as  he  raised  his  hands  in  mock  defense   ;   though  to  know  emre  was  to  know  that  the  words   ,   alone  ,   should  have  been  enough   .    “   shut  the  shit   .   you  serious   ?   ”   a  man  could  have  heavy  pockets  and  still  get  excited  over  the  concept  of  free  things  .    “   hell  yeah  i  want  one   .   gettin’  me  one’a  those  spicy  italian  subs            jesus   ,    it’s  like  you  knew  my  love  and  support  came  with  strings  .   ”

slightly  more  agreeable  when  fed  ,  noted  .  ❛  sure  .  afterall  ,  you  must  be  famished  after  doing  all MY  work  for  me  .  ❜  while  they  had  been  spending  more  time  together  since  their  serendipitous  meeting  ,  there  was  still  a  great  deal  about  the  boy  she  hardly  knew  and  vice  versa  .  it  was  comforting  to  know  there  was  a  sense  of  comradery  between  them  even  though  he  had  virtually  no  clue  who  she  was  ,  or  so  she  thought  .  whatever  information  she  could  gather  about  her  new  ‘  partner  ’  was  welcome  ,  especially  since  she  was  still gauging  how  much  she  could  really  trust  him  with  sensitive  information  .  he  certainly  wasn’t  like  other  REPORTERS  .  when  emre  mentioned  his  podcast  ,  the  wide  eyed  detective  had  taken  it  upon  herself  to  listen  to  every  single  episode  ,  fearful  of  what  he  had  to  say  or  his  treatment  of  a  subject  that  hit  so  close  to  home  .  of  course  ,  she  wouldn’t  admit  as  much  to  him  directly  ,  it  was  actually  an  enjoyable  experience  and  though  certain  episodes  were  harder  to  get  through  than  others  (  due  in  large  part  to  her  personal  involvement  with  the  one  particular  case  )  he  didn’t  come  off  as  outwardly  offensive  or  sensationalist  .  he  was  just  eager  for  the  truth  ,  much  like  she  was  .  so  ,  she’d  welcomed  his  company  and  insights  ,  in  return  for  a  bit  of  insider  information  that  she  was  hardly  allowed  access  to  either  .  it  was  proving  to  be  interesting  enough  .  ❛  i  figured  it  wasn’t  entirely  selfish  ,  sandwiches  are  indeed  a  small price  to  pay  ,  especially  when  it’s  not  coming  directly  out  of  my  pocket  .  so  ,  what  are  you  up  to  today  ?  running  down  some  leads  without  me  ?  ❜

although it had been by her own volition, returning to taunwick had never exactly been on april’s bucket list. once she left, she was certain she’d left. but, as jeff goldblum once said, life ( uh ) finds a way. “ it sounds like a heart attack, ” she snapped. was it dramatic ? definitely ! was she aware that it was extremely hyperbolic ? certainly ! nonetheless… “ they instill the food pyramid, but the second it should be enforced… ” she mumbled, more to herself than the other, but the other was free to listen ! granted, ‘they’ was slightly more in reference to her mother than the american schooling system… but, again, nonetheless… “ what’s the opposite of what you’d recommend ? ”

yikes  !  so  this  was  going  to  be  one  of  those  interactions  .  in  her  lifetime  ,  olivia  had  experience  the  pleasure  of  conversing  with  her  fair  share  of  colorful  characters  and  though  she’d  become  fairly  good  at  slapping  on  a  polite  smile  and  nodding  along  while  they  abbrasively  shared  their  opinion  and  trampled  on  others  because  ‘  they  were  oh  so  important  ’  ,  it  didn’t  mean  she  had  to  enjoy  it  .    ❛  guess  i  skipped  that  class  entirely  ,  my  heart  should  give  in  any  day  now  .  ❜  the  brunette  retorted  ,  glancing  over  at  the  deli’s   LIMITED  menu  .  ❛  uh  .  .  .  WATER  ?  or  maybe  a  hearty  serving  of  iceberg  lettuce  ,  yummy  .  ❜

a  quick  TSK  showed  off  his  playful  judgment  as  he  reached  out  to  grab  two  of  the  many  drinks  she  was  juggling   .   it  was  less  about  being  helpful  (   gasp   ,   emre  would  never   )   ,   and  more  about  wanting  her  undivided  attention   .   and  he  certainly  didn’t  want  her  dropping  it  all  over  the  ground   ;   not  when  his  shoes  were  so  close  to  the  potential  splash  zone   .    “   sorry   ,   shug   !   doin’  your  work  for  ya  is  a  ‘round  the  clock  job   .   but  you  wouldn’t  know  anythin’  about  that    ,   ”   he  continued   ,  wearing  a  shit-eating  grin  as  he  motioned  to  the  collection  of  goodies  in  her  hands   ,  “   y’know   ,   with  ya  bein’  on  snack  duty  and  all   .   ”

❛   alright  then  ,   sherlock  .  let’s  take  it  down  a  notch  .   what  we’re  not  gonna  do  is  demean  my  very  hard  work  and  try  to  make  it  seem  like  you  do  it  better  .  PLUS  ,  cops  gotta  eat  too  .   ❜   olivia  shrugged  off  his  dig  ,  already  somewhat  accustomed  to  his  particular  sense  of  humor  that  was  often  at  the  expense  of  others  .  afterall  ,  it  was  in  good  fun  ,  until  it  wasn’t  .  and  when  it  wasn’t  ,  she  found  herself  nodding  along  with  him  and   throwing  her  own  zingers  into  the  mix  .  it  was  refreshing  ,  to  jest  with  someone  that  didn’t  look  so  worn  down  by  the  gruesome  work  she  had  dedicated  her  life  to  .  her  mother  would  have  sneered  and  beckoned  her  to  ‘  be  careful  ,  mija  ’  .  nowadays   olivia  was  throwing  all  caution  to  the  wind  .  i  figured  some  subs  would  get  a  grin  out  of  the  sargeant  ,  i  haven’t  seen  him  so  much  as  chuckle  since  we  caught  the  last  case  .  and  when  the sarg  is  happy  ,  my  chain  doesn’t  get  yanked  that  often  which  means  you  have  more  wiggle  room  so  it’s  all  a   win  win  ,  wouldn’t  you  agree  ?  so  .  .  .  want  one  ?  departments  buying  .  ❜

    while most of his shift is a blur, teddy takes note of a couple of faces that pass through the doors. one in particular being that of olivia. he won’t admit it, but teddy has gotten quite protective of the other. he’ll deny it if ever asked, but he can’t help but feel like olivia already knows. he’s somewhat proud but also hates it. collecting glasses off tables he moves around olivia’s and takes a momentary seat opposite her. “another date tonight or did you just come here for my charming company?” he raises a brow, a slight smirk tugging on his lips.

  ❛   whoever  lied  to  you  and  said  you  were  CHARMING  ,  is  just  doing  us  all  a  disservice  by  inflating  your  ego  .       ❜   olivia  teased  lightly  ,  offering  a  bright  smile  in  return  .  she  should  be  embarrassed  by  the  terrible  track  record  she  had  with  men  ,  constantly  agreeing  to  less  than  impressive  dates  with   even  more  underwhelming  suitors  but  knowing  she  could  count  on  teddy  as  her  saving  grace  just  solidified  their  odd  friendship  .  he  was  like  the  brother  she  couldn’t  grow  up  to  have  ,  and  thus  she  had  settled  into  the  comfort  of  their  exchanges  ,  not  fearing  judgement  on  his  behalf  .    ❛   it’s  just  me  tonight  ,  i’ve  decided  to  give  swiping  a  break  .  i   needed  a  drink  that  wouldn’t  end  up  poured  over  some  dick  wad’s  hair  .  set  me  up  with  some  bourbon  ?       ❜

“  oh   ,   is  that  what  you’d  recommend   ?    ”    never  in  the  history  of  the  world  had  there  been  a  more  sarcastic  response   .   emre  was  truly  breaking  ground   .    “   fascinating   .   ”    he  wore  a  smile  as  he  waited  for  olivia  to  recognize  him           having  her  talk  to  him  without  even  turning  around  was  something  of  a  non-starter    ,    especially  since  he’d  only  gone  in  there  after  spotting  her  through  the  window   .    “   tell  me  more  ‘bout  this  chili   .    ”

his  voice  ,  a  new  constant  in  her  day  to  day  ,  ellicited  a  soft  groan  paired  masterfully  with  a  quick  eye  roll  .  emre  was  harmless  enough  ,  but  he  had  a  way  of  pressing  all  the  right  buttons  to  turn  her  usually  chipper  mood  around  ,  annoyance  seeping  into  her  features  .  it  was  all  in  good  fun  of  course  ,  she  appreciated  his  humor  and  company  .   ❛   if  you  MUST  know  ,  it’s  a  deli  specialty  .  the  perfect   side  for  your  sandwich  consumption  experience  .    ❜   she  continued   ,   turning  to  face  him  slowly  while  making  sure  none  of  the  drinks  she  held  fell out  of  her  grasp  .    ❛   it’s  a  bit  early  for  me  to  put  up  with  your  sass  ,  don’t  you  usually  come  out  of  your  cave  around  twilight  ?     ❜

❛   if  you’re  stuck  on  what  to  get  ,  i’d  personally  have  to  recommend  the  smoked  turkey  sub  with  a  cup  of  chilli  on  the  side  .  i  know  ,  sounds  like  a  nightmare  but  don’t  knock  it  till  you’ve  tried  it  .   ❜   the  brunette  offered  up  a  soft  smile  as  she  juggled  a  fair  share  of  bottled  drinks  ,  standing  patiently  in  line  to  collect  the  lunch  order  for  her  precinct  .  though  it  wasn’t  her  favorite  task  ,  olivia  couldn’t  complain  much  if  it  meant  leaving  the  police  station  and  interacting  with  individuals  that  weren’t  as  strung  up  .  they’d  had  a  ROUGH  week  and  it  was  starting  to  take  it’s  toll  on  everyone  .
