Aang is not even a remotely realistic depiction of a genocide survivor and that’s due to him being a self-insert for white men. “The last of your kind” trope is a Western idea of genocide and it doesn’t exist as a tangible way to engage with the effects of colonization and eradication, but as a way to quickly gain sympathy from the audience and tokenize the suffering of one single character as “above the rest” without actually confronting the realities of the atrocity. That’s why Aang fans use the excuse that he’s a genocide survivor whenever he lashes out unfairly at everyone around him and think he had the right to tell Katara to forgive the man who killed her mother because he “understood her pain”. That’s why the writers of the movie didn’t have him address the “you don’t understand!” that he threw in Katara’s face.

people love to call out cultural appropriation in storytelling until it's ATLA. Then suddenly any criticism levied at the show is misconstrued into a criticism of the cultures the show has ripped off instead of a criticism of the mediocre writing these two white men did.
It reminds me of Buffy in a way because while Buffy was airing, Joss Whedon presented himself as the King of Feminsim, and people ate that out of his hand. They earnestly believed Buffy was a feminist masterpiece, and even to this day when I try to point out how a feminist analysis of Buffy reveals just how flat it falls in that assessment, people remain stalwart in their belief that though Whedon is clearly a raging misogynist, the show itself is a bastion of feminism. Even though what it was actually doing was bottling vague optics of feminism to tell a story that, fundamentally, was not doing the work.
I don't have much hopeful analysis to offer about why this is; unfortunately I think it's just the case that we love to turn white men into gods who can do no wrong. And while I firmly believe that people are perfectly capable of writing outside their own identities and personal experience with grace and thoughtfulness, it is important to be wary of when, in your mind, you've begun to turn a writer into some sort of omniscient god
