The weird thing to me is we have zero canon of gwyn having any romantic feelings for literally anyone, let alone Azriel. Maybe that she finds Rhys attractive? This is always where their ship crashes and burns for me. Do we know if sheâs ready for romance? Does she have a type? We literally know nothing of what Gwynâs actually wants and needs in this area. Itâs all what gwynrielâs have projected onto her. Very least we know she likes reading romances. Sarah gave us nothing in this regard. No discussion with Nesta about it, no bonus from her pov, etc..
Listen, at this point, fanon Gwyn has so overwhelmed that side of the fandom, I am not so sure they ever remember the real Gwyn.
Even putting Az aside for a moment, some of the things I see out there make NO SENSE. A week or so ago there was some post about how she is 'plain' and 'no one sees her beauty' or something stupid like that, where it literally says that she is beautiful and to Nesta (granted, an unreliable narrator, but still) Gwyn is on par with Mor in beauty. Same thing with height--'omg, the height difference between Az and Gwyn. She is so small...' swoony swoon. First description of Gwyn--'she is tall, taller than an average female Fae'.
The insane bloodlust that they always assign to her, like she constantly wants to murder, kill, cut, stab someone. WTF? She is basically a nun, who's lived in 'convents' all her life. She is a librarian. Just because she wanted to cut the ribbon or whatever doesn't make her some deranged bloodthirsty weirdo. I am no Gwyn expert, but I can't recall if she's ever even killed anyone, even during the BD. I know she sent the beasts to the warriors' camp, but I don't remember if she ever did any kind of hand to hand combat with anyone.
They just took this character and completely remade it, and now they are claiming it as 'canon'. What? There has NEVER been any indication, any discussion, any hints of her interest in Azriel. She never asked Nesta about him, she never made googly eyes at him, she never hinted at anything remotely romantic/sexual when it comes to him. She's known him for months, and yet their FIRST discussion has been for 15 minutes at Solstice. His reaction 'fuck, can't avoid this one now. Thanks shadows!' Her reaction, "what are you doing here, I am practicing on my own, I don't want you here."
I think that there is a reason SJM didn't assign anything sexual to her, because that's not what her journey is about. It's not about finding a LI, it's not about relationships, or men, or women, or whatever. It's about Gwyn, and her internal struggle with her trauma and who she is and her overcoming that trauma. Same with Emerie --not about girlfriends, but about herself. Her acknowledging Mor's beauty is not an indicator of a budding relationship! Jeez.
I really struggle with this need to pair people up with someone, anyone, or even someone they don't want. It's okay to be without a BF/GF. At one point, we are all there, and it's fine, we survive, our worlds are still full, we are still complete individuals.
Let Gwyn go out there, leave the convent, find a job and then a love interest--one she actually wants.
