Thoughts on Emma and Islington. (There are many.)

Although I enjoy it as a stalwart friendship, I’m undecided about this relationship.

Emma and Islington have always read as siblings to me, and this dynamic has been emphasized even more in the later volumes. Both she and Islington have immediate visceral reactions to any suggestion of marrying one another.

But...perhaps they doth protest too much? Not so much about their feelings now, I do believe they feel much more like siblings than anything else at present, but maybe it’s a really long burn?

There’s a likeness in them to Emma’s parents, one high born and the other low. And her mother’s first impression of Declan being irritation that grew into affection. (I think, however, in the comparison to her parents, Emma is Declan and Islington is her mother. The former less stuffy with a wicked sense of humor; the latter attempting some semblance of attending to social norms despite the other. Emma is the artist and Islington is the aristocrat.)

They have so much in common! Much more than she and Pierce. The journaling. The awful aunts. St. Crispian's. Stonecrop is to Henry what Lapis Lazuli is to Emma. Losing one's parents, grief and a broken heart at a young age. They both know how to navigate the upper echelons of society, but neither one has any love of the game. Both are fairly unserious about marriage at present, but they're both open to the idea of it and to children in the future. (Emma said two...as in twins? Perhaps?)

And Emma's father, Declan.

So in this volume (8) we learned that Declan and Islington met when he was 20 - the same year that Hannah died - and that Declan meant a lot to Islington at that time, in a paternal way. And we still don't know why. Or how. Other than that bit of advice he shared. I agree with Mariana, even though Henry denied it, that his care of/for Emma has something to do with that. He feels a certain amount of duty or responsibility towards her. So I’m circling back around to believe that Henry's feelings towards Emma are familial.

Speaking of that conversation with Mariana, though, I had thought for a while that Henry was, in a way, making up for "failing" with Maggie by being a Good Big Brother to Emma, and that may still be the case, given Maggie's history and temperament. Is Emma supposed to be her polar opposite, housed in the south tower while Mariana has claimed the north? And yet her equal somehow?

However, after we learned of Henry's original Alchemy group, the sister he's making up for didn't appear to be Maggie at all but Hannah. So I had the same question that Mariana asked, Who is Henry replacing? The Lover or the Sister? And Henry's answer, that he wouldn't replace either one but add Emma to that group instead, baffled me. Is she something of both, then? Is he having a difficult time knowing where indeed to place her? Or his feelings for/about her? He was certainly very sweet about wanting to introduce her to all things Stonecrop.

What about the negative images of Emma and her all-male friend group and Islington and his all-female friend group? Is she the Pierce or the Hawkes or the Islington to Islington?

And who does Hawkes believe that Emma is similar to? Or at least has a similar good effect on Henry?!

Sigh. Now that I’ve talked around it, I’m still undecided about the future of this relationship. It makes sense to me, it’s a good match on paper, but there just aren’t any feelings there right now.

Overall, Emma and Islington are a kind of matched set but in a way that right now trends more toward siblings, towards a familial relationship. Having a lot in common is necessary for intimate friendships, too, and the two of them both not seeming to exhibit any attraction towards one another indicates that this relationship may not be changing any time soon. But I guess we have time with how many books are planned.

Found out that I actually can bring all my favorite science characters – Dustin, Grace, Xeno and Senku – together with a little bit of headcanons. So, if you are somehow familiar with stranger things, project hail mary and dr.stone at the same time, hear me out.

Events can happen in 2019 in the phm universe, shortly before Hail Mary launching. According to this:

 – Dr. Ryland Grace, almost completely the same as in canon. I like to mix book and movie canon. My hc (I don’t sure if that info was in a book or movie) that he is 35yo or around. 

 – Dr. Dustin Henderson. 47yo. One of the leading astrophysics in the world. Received Nobel prize in Physics in 2000. He was concerned about the dying Sun, and also he was really curious about Astophages, so he volunteered for the Hail Mary project. Stratt doesn't see any reason to refuse such a specialist as he, and Dr. Henderson ends up as a member of the project. Mostly he makes astrophysics calculating for the trajectory to Tau Ceti and others space calculations. All his free time he spends with Grace studying Astrophage (real alien! Dustin is dying to study everything about them)

 – Dr. Xeno Houston Wingfield. I don’t like his dr.stone canon age (29 in 2019), I prefer to see him a little bit older, around Grace’s age. He is currently a NASA scientist, the spaceshipcraft’s specialist. He didn’t volunteer himself to the mission, but because he was already working in NASA he joined the mission as part of his job. He isn’t interested in Astrophage as a space life, but as a source of power. He is one of the scientists who is responsible for the construction of Hail Mary, and helps Dmitri (book’s canon PHM. One of the inventors of the spine drives for Mary)

 –  Senku Ishigami. I was sure that he was 17yo in 2019, but check the wiki and found out that he was 15yo in 2019 (dr.stone first chapter). Still, in both cases he joined the Hail Mary project despite being a minor. Firstly, he already has correspondence with Xeno as his science mentor. Senku knows some details about the project from it and free sources, and he volunteers himself to the mission. Not as an astronaut, but he wants to help in any way that he can. He proves to Stratt with his knowledge and charisma that he has to be in the project and Stratt allows it. Senku joined as an assistant. Mostly he just helps drs with math and do boring calculations. 

I hope at least someone is interested in that crossover! I already have some thoughts for part 2 (where I will tell about all relationships between them), so if you want to see it let me know. My only real problem with Batwheels is that the cars can't interact with their owners and drivers - like imo it would have made for some awesome dynamics like HEAR ME OUT FOR A MINUTE!! 😭👏

Batman teaching the Batwheels new stunts, working with them and seeing them grow as persons, not to mention maybe giving them responsibilities and talk to them about problems or other things they need to work on or like? YES!

Joker and Prank would make the awesomest duo that "awesome" has ever seen. They can plan together, make jokes to one another and even pull slight stunts on each other!? YES!

Bibi and Batgirl becoming absolute besties? YES!

Any interaction with Batman and his vehicles: Imagine Batman talking to Bam, keep an eye on Robin and Redbird, he'll probably love Batwings sass, like YES to all of that

Robin and Redbird doing teenager shit, hyping over upcoming movies, talk about Robins homework (if Robin goes to school, Robin is a teen right? Im not sure but i will still put this here) watching tv shows staying up late, and Batman giving both of them a warning that they needs to go to sleep RIGHT NOW

Harley becoming besties with Jestah, them teaming up to pull shitstunts in Gotham, or mb on the Joker if Prank wants to, ,like them sometimes also teaming with Prank. OH OH OH AND JOKER, HARLEY, JESTAH AND PRANK BEING AN ICONIC TEAM LIKE HECK TO THE FUCK-

Ik its kid show and its not everyones jam but DAMN i would have loved to see this shit. Would have been so fucking cool and funny idc what anyone says. writing Genderfluid? How would you accomplish this?

???Did you ever have a really cool idea then blank how to actually follow through with it???

Ok so I want your guy's thoughts I like to write characters based off me, each have a small problem I deal with or something I struggle with, this helps me kind of vent or put my mind into a visual

I was thinking about my character Dylan. dylan is a trans male character. He is a shape shifter and I have it so he shifts to look more male but this takes a drain on his energy. He's actually really strong and powerful with shape shifting but he holds this constant form which makes him seem weaker. Dylan was originally supposed to be genderfluid, but I changed that since it didn't fit his character.

but how cool would that be a gender fluid shape shifter. Awesome concept, right? yeah, that's what I thought till I tried to write it... so this is the question how does one write a genderfluid character??? Wouldn't it be confusing for the audience. since the pronouns would change? So how does one efficiently write this? How do you make sure the character design still looks like the same person? how does one introduce a character like this? This would come with challenges like the writer needing to remember that the character is fluid. Also making sure the audience doesn't get confused. Plus, you'd need to make sure that your fluid character isn't the whole focus (unless that's your story, but in this context the plot isn't about their gender they just happen to be gender fluid).

I'm not changing Dylan back to be genderfluid as it no longer fits his character. We actually don't really realize Dylan is trans until we learn that the constant shifting is taking a toll on his body. I don't plan for it to be mentioned much as it's not a part of the plot like that. It is simply just who Dylan is. I do plan to have maybe some funny moments about it and show some of his struggles but that would be more of character exposition. The plot could prevail without it.

Please let me know your ideas on how to write a character who is genderfluid. I'm just interested now. I'm sure someone else might value this information. Hope y'alls days are swell...

I posted recently re: an assertion that Dean is attracted to underage girls (based primarily on his comments about teen girls in "It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester" & "After School Special"). OP's angle was roughly: "Dean could have pedophiliac attractions as a result of having been sexually-assaulted in childhood."

While that's a reasonable-enough take, I personally disagree. I don't think Dean is attracted to teen girls. IMO, a close reading strongly suggests that what he's doing in those scenes can be boiled down to "crude humor attempting to gross out Sam."

But I also wanted to talk about Dean's general demeanor toward young women, because we see a fair amount of interaction between him & teenage girls, including Claire, Krissy (from "Adventures in Babysitting") & Marie (from "Fan Fiction"), and it's markedly different from how Dean approaches adult women. With adult women — up to & including grandmothers (S14:E13 "Lebanon," S11:11 "Into the Mystic") — Dean flirts the way he breathes. And it's explicitly acknowledged that his flirtation doesn't necessarily indicate that he wants to sleep with the women he's batting his eyelashes at (as Pamela says, "You don't want me... You just like to flirt").

This is just how Dean's most comfortable interacting with women. Frankly, I have to imagine he's not even conscious of his behavior most of the time. (Some of this style of interaction can probably be traced back to a lack of female role models/parental figures/etc. during crucial developmental years of his childhood. But some of this is simply because Dean really enjoys sex — and thinks everyone should enjoy it — and he's just extremely comfortable with himself in that particular context.)

But how Dean interacts with adult women is not at all how he interacts with teenage girls who end up in his social sphere. There's no casual flirting with Krissy or Marie, no smoky innuendo with Claire. And when Jody brings up the "sex talk" over dinner with Claire & Alex, Dean doesn't leer or snark — he's ready to bolt from the room. The way he treats these girls, it's clear they fall into the category of "kids," not "women," and that that's not a sexual category for him. Instead, Dean seems to slip into a more familial role. The way he interacts with Krissy & Claire isn't terribly dissimilar from how he treats Ben (adjusted for age) or Jack (once he finally warms up to him). [Although he leans into more of a "cool older brother" vibe than a "dad" vibe with the girls — likely sensing that they'd resent/find patronizing any attempt to be a substitute father — whereas he gives off more "dad" energy with Ben & Jack.]

Ultimately, we have tons of evidence that Dean cares about kids, treats them with respect in their 1-on-1 interactions, & has a generally protective attitude towards them. And everything I've seen suggests that this treatment is applied equally to boys and girls, younger kids and older ones.

(Tangential, but: Honestly, one of the things I love about Dean is the respect he has for women despite the way he grew up. A lot of men who come of age in a "boy's world" see women as almost some kind of alien creatures, beautiful but unknowable, desirable but not really people — not in the way it matters. Dean might not have a particularly nuanced understanding of gender in society, & he's definitely absorbed some misogynistic tendencies from the world around him — who hasn't? — but he's got the basics right. He's starting from a place of "women are people." With a lot of guys, it feels like even if they get there, they still have to stop & recalibrate sometimes, consciously reset their assumptions. But with Dean, it just feels like his default position. Maybe it's because he cares so much more about the hunter vs. civilian divide, maybe it's something else... IDK. But that's just the sense I get from him: that this is second nature.)
