About a year and a half ago I went to see a figure skating show. It was mostly old Russian pairs and ice dancers, and the whole show was wrapped into this saccharine theme of “love, so different and beautiful in all it’s forms” (given that all the forms at hand were mixed-gender couples). Every single dance, every single composition, every single comment. It was suffocating.

And then there was Yags. And the host said something along the lines of “countless female hearts melted”, and he replied that it was all in the past, but also “both female and male hearts”. It was the only moment in the whole show when I felt seen and validated, and sucks to know that the guy’s actually terrible.

Lol I really hate how Yuzuru Hanyu and Nathan Chen are framed by the North American media

Like I think they’re both amazing athletes but the homophobia really jumps out when Nathan is constantly framed as this ATHLETIC SPORTY FIGURE SKATER WHO WEARS BOY CLOTHES with pictures of his straining face that are supposed to approximate masculine fury

And Yuzuru is described as like ~artistic and ~graceful and here’s a photo of him looking nonplussed or even shocked next to Nathan grunting away

Like they aren’t both incredible athletes??? Like Nathan not wearing feathers makes him more of a man? Like traditional masculinity is REQUIRED for a male athlete to succeed???
