I think a part of Dean was relieved when he realized he wasn't going to make it. From the first season to the last, the show's made it clear that Dean's biggest fear was losing Sam. Be it Sam walking out or Sam dying. And I feel like he'd go into hunts with the thought that he may lose Sam first. So to be the first to go meant never having to see Sam leave him. He'd take an excruciating death over that any day. And Sam didn't leave him, not even when he was gone.

in it's a terrible life, zachariah tries to prove to dean that being a hunter is in his blood, and that no matter what alternate universe he puts him in he'll always find his way back to the job. and he thinks he's succeeded in proving his point by the end, except that's not what happens. sam is the one who gets hunting flashbacks and gets dean to hunt the ghost with him. dean wasn't interested in it. sam is the one who persuaded him. hunting isn't who dean is at his core, sam is. dean will always find his way back to sam.
