Here’s the thing: authors know when they get a rec on an older story. There’s a telltale uptick of kudos (with a 10-15% comment rate if you’re lucky) in your digest email.
The thing is, there’s no way to know where these people are coming from. In the before, when fandom was more in the corners we all knew about, you could search LJ or a message board or whatever social bookmarking site we were using. You could join the community and participate.
You could get a little dopamine hit by seeing someone tell their friends why they loved your story.
Anymore, those recs are hidden in discords, or in tiktoks or instagram slideshows that you can’t search for. They’re inaccessible, not discoverable unless you’re already there. You may never know why 27 people left kudos on an old story of yours, what they liked and found in your writing. You just get the thumbs up and a kinda lonely feeling, cause these could be your people. You could like them, maybe. You could be friends.
But you’ll never find out why they stopped by, or what people are saying about you behind your back, and that’s sad.
So thank you to the people who still do public rec lists on this webbed site. You are my sunshine, and I’m appreciative of all of you.
If you are recced a fic and enjoyed it, leave a comment telling the author where you came from! We like to know!
So I just saw the most incredible production of Macbeth that wove parental grief into the whole regicide plot in such a fascinating way.
So at the very beginning of the play there was a scene where Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are at a funeral as the primary mourners. A stretcher is carried on with a covered body. The body was notably very small. They laid flowers on it and Macbeth immediately left for battle.
Now *I* studied Shakespeare in college so I immediately knew there is one single line that implies that the Macbeths lost a child at some point. Most of the time this isn't utilized in productions; it's just a throwaway line, intended to paint just how determined Lady M is for this regicide thing to work and how furious she is that her husband has cold feet. In this production she delivers "I have given suck, and know how tender tis to love the babe that milks me" nearly in tears. She takes a moment to steel herself before saying, "I would while it was smiling in my face, have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums and dashed the brains pit, had I so sworn" and she very nearly SCREAMED this in Macbeth's face.
Also noted was how the Macbeths looked at Macduff's children. Lady M was clutching her heart, nearly breaking watching them embrace their parents. Macbeth could not even look at them.
At the end of Lady Macbeth's plot, when she is sleepwalking and sleeptalking, she is typically portrayed as speaking to no one or to her husband. However, at a certain point of her monologue she got on her knees, raised her voice to a comforting octave, and began miming tear wiping, hand holding, hair and face stroking, around a child-sized figure. "Wash your hands, put on your nightgown, look not so pale. I tell you yet again, Banquo’s buried; he cannot come out on’s grave." Then she stands and appears to take the child's hand. "Go to bed, go to bed. I can hear knocking at the gate-" then she looks down and realizes that no one is there, followed be the most heartbreaking shriek I've ever heard followed by a full minute of her just weeping while curled up on the floor before she stood up, finished her monologue and left the stage.
Most of the time when the loss of a child is utilized in a performance or adaptation, it is assumed that the child was an infant and lost some time ago. To imply that the child died IMMEDIATELY prior to the events of the play and had been cared for and loved by their parents for a few years adds such a fascinating layer to the desperation to ascend to the throne, Lady M's madness, and Macbeth's initial hesitation into "in for a penny, in for a pound" attitude, Macbeth's fury that Banquo's, not his, children will take the throne, and even Macbeth's eventual demise following a frenzied final battle.
How far will grief push you to fill a hole? How far will grief push you to desperation? And what happens when none of your new pursuits are filling the void left by the one you lost? And what happens when you realize you have nothing left to lose?
It was a PHENOMENAL production.
How she looks at you when the argument you didn’t know had been brewing for 4 days is about to kick off

Once again truly curious to me how people can watch all of Supernatural and not understand that Sam and Dean are each other’s number one priority over everyone and everything

Hellers should stick to words like "dog", "cat", "car" etc, because "canon" is beyond their education level.
A ship doesn't go canon "anywhere between 0-8 times before they ACTUALLY went canon". It's either canon or it's not. And destiel was never canon.
And what the hell is "double canon"?
Like I said, hellers should stick to simple words, because they are simpletons.
"it takes something deeply fucked up to make an entire website celebrate a hallucinated wedding."
WTAF are they talking about? Because as far as Spn goes there was that time that Becky love potioned Sam into marrying her...
... and the show chose to frame this shot like this, putting Dean in the middle of a illusory heart and looking like he's gonna puke at the idea of his brother marrying someone else. (7x08)
Or the end of season 8 when Sam and Dean kinda, sorta, got inadvertently handfasted in that church...
With Crowley as their witness, they stood in a church and Dean declared his undying devotion to Sam, bound his hand, they chose each other over saving the world, and hugged. (8x23)
Sam and Dean were the ones always being compared with or mistaken for a married couple. Sam and Dean not only had several break-ups on the show, but Dean even said, "What did Sam say? Does he want a divorce?" And the best part of that was that he said it to Castiel, who then just reassured him that it would take "a lot more than trying to kill [Sam] with a hammer to make him want to walk away." (10x03)
And like, again, ship what you want to ship, but the only relationship that Dean had in Supernatural that was compared to being married to a guy was his relationship with Sam, his brother. And Castiel's feelings for him were one-sided, as clearly stated in the script for the episode where he confessed his feelings...
"Dean can't reciprocate, but Cass doesn't need him to."
(15x18)
And finally, the one who was shown to be widowed at the end of the series was Sam. There was an entire montage of him grieving the loss of his brother for the rest of his mortal life. And, he named his son Dean! Garth named his twins Sam and Cas, but Sam named his one and only child after his brother who there were six photos of around his deathbed. Six. No photos of the mother of his son. There were three of Mary, two of his son, one of John, one of Bobby, and SIX of him and his brother.
When Dean was dying, he said things like, "It was always you... and me." and "I love you so much, my baby brother." And then when he got to heaven he was met by Bobby, declared the place "almost perfect" because Sam wasn't there, and then went and drove around by himself (and apparently fucked with an AU for funzies) while he waited for Sam to catch up. (15x20)
And while I do not think that Dean and Cas had any sexual chemistry, Destiel is a popular ship so to each their own, I guess. But yeah, 'canon' means what actually happens on the show, not stuff folks just collectively make up.
Don't forget Jody saying to Sam, "Come on. You and Dean? That's something special, don't you think?"
The US government has officially declared ‘radical pro-transgender groups’ to be domestic terrorist organizations. This will certain remain for the duration of this administration, and may hold into the next.
This opens the door for not only the targeting of trans individuals, but also trans communities, the broader queer community, and even allies and family members of transgender people.
Everyone, be safe. Look out for each other. Cherish small wins, and moments of joy.
Surviving is more than grand acts of defiance. Living is in the small, the everyday, the imperceptible. Living is holding a hand, or being kind— little things that you don’t remember the day after. Love each other, and love yourself in equal measure. Tyrants are brittle things. Never has a dark time failed to end.
And before anyone accuses me of overreacting, let me be clear. The last line of the Presidential Foreword in the new policy document literally reads, “We will find you and we will kill you.”
It is important to realize that language like this is designed to scare people out of taking action. They want trans people scared, isolated and afraid to find each other. They want trans activists to take less action. They want trans organizations to shut down or to go underground become hard to find. Don't let them get what they want.
The targeting that this allows consists first and foremost of surveillance. Their ability to actually charge and prosecute individual trans people with domestic terrorism hinges on being able to establish a connection between ideology and planning acts of violence.
Do not respond to this by letting them win. Do not respond to this by retreating. Do not yield without a fight.
