Eva Noblezada’s Final Curtain Call for Hadestown - 13/8/2023 [x]
I saw this tweet exchange and had to
Production photos of 2021 Hadestown, photos courtesy of Clipservice. 2/
trembling with ill-concealed rage until i see a funny negative review for Dear Evan Hansen at which point all the anger dissipates like mist and i am left at ease, a tranquil smile on my face as i find myself at complete peace with the world
Me, reading all this:

“Line Without a Hook” - Ricky Montgomery
Oh, baby, I am a wreck when I'm without you
I need you here to stay
I broke all my bones that day I found you
Crying at the lake
Was it something I said to make you
Feel like you're a burden?
Oh, and if I could take it all back
I swear that I would pull you from the tide
//
“An Act Of Kindness” - Bastille
An act of kindness
Is what you showed to me
It caught me by surprise
In this town of glass and ice
Kindness, so many people passed me by
But you warmed me to my core
And you left me wanting more

“The Man Who Laughs” by Victor Hugo
[Dea] had learned what Gwynplaine had done for her, from Ursus, to whom he had related his rough journey from Portland to Weymouth […]. She knew that when an infant dying upon her dead mother, suckling a corpse, a being scarcely bigger than herself had taken her up; […] Where every one else would have hesitated, he had advanced; that where every one else would have drawn back, he consented; that [Gwynplaine] had put his hand into the jaws of the grave and drawn out her—Dea. […]
In the ideal, kindness is the sun; and Gwynplaine dazzled Dea.

Audrey Brisson & Louis Maskell as Dea & Grinpayne in “The Grinning Man,” Bristol Old Vic 2016
How could I have known a prince would find me in the snow?
If you hadn’t found me, I’d have died there long ago.
i think this is my favorite way to draw Grinpayne
[image description: two digital drawings of Grinpayne from The Grinning Man, in a simplistic, cartoony style. There are stitches going up from the corners of his mouth to his cheeks, and he’s frowning. He has dark, tired lines under half-lidded eyes, with his eyebrows raised and knitted together. Overall, his expression shows that he is generally miserable and very tired. The first image is him from the knees up, head tilted to the side. Next to him is the caption, “THE WORLD’S MOST EXHAUSTED MAN” with the subtitle of “please let him sleep, he really needs it.” The second image is him from the shoulders up, slumped over, and he says, “I don’t wanna be a circus freak, I just wanna go back to bed.” End description.]
And that’s on that’s on that
I love me some musical theater. So while I had heard from a friend that Dear Evan Hansen had a deeply unpleasant storyline, when my mom offered to buy me and my brother, who was visiting from my ho…
um not to cause a stink, but read this shit
no, what the actual fuck.
uhhh okay i dont get like. why you guys are all pissy about this bc the writer of this article is frankly quite correct??
1) evan hansen is forgave for his actions (at least mostly) and honestly suffers zero real consequences for his actions? which basically sends a message of “if youre a young /tragically/ mentally ill boy then you can get away with whatever the fuck you want” and gets the idea across really well.
2) the music in this is like? really mediocre? sincerely, me is the only good song tbh the rest of it sounds super generic
3) none of the characters are even vaguely likeable, save for evan’s mom who evan treats like fucking shit even though she’s working her ass off and idk maybe its just bc i had a mom who worked multiple jobs and was never around but i understood why she wasnt and i was actually grateful for her sacrifice? unlik fuckin evan hansen over here who is a rude piece of shit
4) maybe this is more aimed at the fandom than the show itself, but i really dont get why evan/connor is?? a thing?? their only REAL interactions are violent and not? romantic at all? but hey i mean whatever yall gotta do to fetishize teenage gay boys and shove em into unrealistic relationships together. i guess.
5) what exactly?? is the point of this story?? bc our shitty main character literally doesnt even learn a lesson at the end? oh, was it supposed to be ~no one is alone~ bc all i saw was a selfish white boy taking advantage of another family’s suffering for attention.
6) in addition to the nuances of mental illness being overlooked, theyre also heavily romanticized? also no one ever actually gives a shit about connor, only the fake version evan made up. to, uh. get attention
7) do you guys not realize that this show is just pandering? they put out a show with an anxious, suicidal main character, gave you another boy to ship him with, made him be pissy at his parents and then? never got any repercussions for any of it. how does no one see what wild tumblr bait that is??? YOUNG TEENAGERS CAN RELATE TO EVAN. it also spreads a horrible message that all your misdoings will be forgiven if youre mentally ill which isnt. fucking true. the writer of this article was right– suicide and mental illness-based media is making TONS of money rn. so of course they throw a show abt it onto broadway! and you all fell for the bait!
all in all, this show is mediocre, has no compelling storyline or characters, literally have a critical eye and realize that evan hansen is a piece of shit and maybe you guys shouldnt be romanticizing all of his actions like ~uwu my precious anxious gay son~ like. HE FUCKED UP MAJORLY AND WAS MEGA SELFISH AND RUDE AND TERRIBLE THROUGH THE WHOLE SHOW. but yknow. you do you, i guess. glorify mental illness. help capitalists benefit off our suffering by shoving ~relatable~ media down our throats and just. not view anything with a critical eye and realize the ulterior motives here. dear evan hansen and everything it stands for fucking sucks.
musical theatre meme | 2/3 lighting designs | Hadestown
“The real moral of Hadestown to me is, yes, we’re fucked, but we still have to try with all our might. We have to love hard and make beauty in the face of futility. That’s the essence of what Persephone sings at the end of the show: “Some birds sing when the sun shines bright / my praise is not for them, but the one who sings in the dead of night / I raise my cup to him.””
— Anais Mitchell (via theredshoes)
i can’t stop smiling, how strange.
jokes? Y’all want jokes?
