Hey friends, Recs here with a little blog update!

I have finally reached a place where I feel like I can really start digging back into reading and making reviews.  (My mom still have one more treatment and then off to radiation once she is recovered. The last round was really hard on her body so they had to bump her last appointment. But overall she is doing better!) I just want to say thank you for your patience during this time and for allowing me to be a little human and not a review machine. I have been reading outside of the OHSHC fandom and I think it has helped me to critically think about my process of reviewing.  Let me flex for a hot second….okay? Well I looked back and totaled the word count for one week. During the height of my fic reading hole I crawled into I read close to 500k words… 

500k!

Mind you I have a normal job and was also trying to survive as a functional human. And I also finished and started a paperback book in the process. But my mind was thriving on little sleep and some good self indulging fics. The last poll I did was all the way back in February. And let me tell you there are a lot more friends now than there were then. 

I want to hear from you guys before I start diving back in and searching for new fics to read! If you would be so kind as to fill out this little poll I created so it will help give me a better idea of what you guys are wanting to read! It should take less than five minutes of your time and I will be more eternally grateful for your input!! (I will leave the poll up for a while just so everyone has a chance to participate.)

Personal Update #2

Hello everyone! Long time no see! 

I thought it would be good to give you a little update! My mom is officially done with her second round of chemo and is doing better. I took an extra day off last week so we could drive up and see her (10 hour car trip one way is a killer). She seemed to be doing better and that has eased some of my lingering anxieties about the situation. She has two more rounds of chemo and then after that she will start her radiation treatment. Along with my husband, we were able to get in some much needed family time and out of our tiny apartment. It is no joke but in the thick of the shelter in place precaution was enforced in my city I was mentally in a bad place. Our numbers still aren’t doing great (my state is one of the 20 some odd states that are open though I have a feeling we will have another shut down due to the continued climbing numbers). But I think I have finally gotten out of my depressive slump (eating cleaner, getting more sleep, and working out consistently have really helped) and feel the urge to start working on things for this blog.  Here are some things to expect moving forward: -I will be creating some polls to get a feel of the sort of content you all want to see. (Ships, tags, characters, etc.) -Posts asking for your personal recommendation. Friendly Reminder- My ask box is still open. As I get back into reading fics, this will be the first place I go before searching AO3, FF.net, and Tumblr for stories. Have a story that you are just dying for a review? Submit it and I will gladly take a look at it!  Even though I will not be posting regularly scheduled reviews quite yet I am taking baby steps to work myself back to a consistent schedule. Review (Contains Spoilers):

Through a series of typical twin teasing and pushing their limits the twins unleash a curse on the male Host Club members. Now with demons possessing their shadows each host has a ‘Shadow Form’ working to gain the bodies of their counterparts. Each demon’s mission is to seek after the one thing that means the most to them. Throughout the story we learn bit by bit what each host holds the most dear to them. Working against the clock it is only a matter of time before sunrise and the hosts are desperately trying to not only find each other but Haruhi who was kidnapped by one of the Shadow Members.

Things That I Loved:

I love the contrast between the host members and their shadow counterparts. From what is written we have a pretty good idea as to what each host holds dear. The dark parts of the hosts as represented by their shadow forms bring out the less than savory aspects of our hosts. And I loved that the author explored the ideas that the hosts are human and they can’t maintain a wholly pure hearts. Sometimes we cannot help but press the darkness into the darkest corners of our minds.

I also enjoyed the overall writing style of the author. It was so easy to flow between chapters and get sucked into the plot. In its current state I did not see any glaring plot holes or weird formatting issues.

Things I Wanted More Of:

Obviously, I would love it if this was a finished project mostly because I am selfish and want to see a conclusion to the building tension. But really this story has the potential to be a stand out piece within the fandom. It is not often you come across something that is well written, has decent plot, and captures the true essence of the host club.

Favorite Lines or Quotes From Story:

"I don't scheme and tell, Haruhi."

Would I Read Again?

Yes! I think it was an interesting enough concept that could lead to more angst and tension, which is something I like in a story. Although, I would recommend not reading it if you are on the tired side. You can easily confuse yourself as to who is talking (host/shadow host.) I had to go back every once in a while to re-read a section because I was confused as to who was speaking. But this is more so a me problem being a fast reader (and finishing this fic in one sitting while being on the sleepy side).

Personal Update

I know you guys have been waiting for more reviews but I have some good/bad news.

The bad news is that my mom has been diagnosed with Stage 2 cancer. The good news is that it is very treatable and she goes in for surgery this week and follows up with radiation. Because of this my mental health has really been yo-yoing between ok and not ok. I have one more review that I am going to give you next week and then go on hiatus. To be honest I haven’t even touched much fic since we got the news almost 3 weeks ago let alone give you a half decent review.  I only want to give you my best, because you deserve the best. Would you believe that this blog has almost crossed the 500 follower line!?! How cool is that?? I am so glad that I have found a group of people who enjoy OHSHC as much as I do. Thanks for all your support! My ask box will still remain open for your reviews and if you want anything just to read you can always drop a pm and I can give you some links to my favorites I have bookmarked. I still stroll Tumblr and can be reached even if I am not posting reviews!

Which Should We Do Next?

I am closing the Soulmate AU Prompt List and will finish the rest of the requests as best as I can. I’ll be honest with you all, I didn’t realize how difficult this prompt list would be. I’ve sadly realized that the Soulmate AU should be reserved for multi-chapter fics and not ficlets. It’s nearly impossible for me to write a cute short story with my usual pizaz and glamour. I’m not proud of what I’ve written for this prompt list because I know it’s not my best and it’s beginning to bum me out. So I’d like to finish this prompt list as quickly as I can so we can move forward onto something new. 

I’ve created another poll where you can vote what we dive into next. In the meantime, I will try to answer as many requests as I can. Please be understanding if I do not answer requests with rare pairs because those have proven to be incredibly difficult for this prompt list.

Author Summary: Things have finally calmed down to business as usual—as much as business is ever usual, for the Ouran High School Host Club—and Kaoru is feeling some tried and true Hitachiin-brand boredom. Seeing this, Kyoya issues an intriguing challenge: he plans on winning a certain game in exactly five years. If Kaoru wants to beat him, all he has to do is figure out the goal of the game before Kyoya wins it.

As if a tried and true Hitachiin could turn down a challenge like that.

Review (Contains Spoilers):

Kyoya isn’t called the Shadow King for nothing. This story is about a “gift” Kyoya gives to Kaoru in which he proposes a game between them that will last over the next five years. It is up to Kaoru to figure out what Kyoya’s ultimate plan is with regards to their friends and the conclusion of the game. When we reach about midway through the game Kaoru proposes his own game between he and Kyoya, in which, Kyoya promptly figures out within their weekend together. Through twists and turns Kaoru learns more about Kyoya and his own feelings, with the help of his friends. Through many trials and stumbles they are able to reveal the solution to the conclusion of their game.

Things That I Loved:

Chapter 5 had this wonderful scene between Kyoya and Kaoru near the end of the chapter. We come to the conclusion of the first year in the five years game and we are gifted with a beautiful and heart clenching scenario. It is probably the first real romantic interaction between our two main characters and it is described in Kaoru’s point of view. It is just perfect. 

I loved the cat and mouse game between them. I loved the ping and pong! It was addicting to read as Kaoru gained hints and connected the pieces of the puzzle. You think that he figures it out and then Kyoya throws a curveball, complicating the solution even more.

Things I Didn’t Care For:

This might just be my bias showing but I honestly can’t think of anything to write for this section.

Favorite Lines or Quotes From Story:

“Is that an official guess?” Kyoya asked. He pushed his glasses up to catch the glare of the nearest light, voice dripping with innocent nonchalance so fake it was practically a crime on its own.

Seriously, Haruhi could definitely become president of the world. She probably wouldn’t even need to campaign; she already had an influential enough fanbase that they’d take care of the whole election for her.

Kyoya’s compliment weaknesses, as compiled by Dr. Hitachiin Kaoru: his selflessness and, evidently, the well-proportioned nature of his ass.

Would I Read Again?

Yes, 100% yes. It has all the things I have ever wanted in a story. The intrigue and mystery bring me back to it again and again. I love the writing style of the author and how they portray the dynamics between Kyoya and Kaoru.

Aww thanks for the tag @animaniachan!! It’s a bit hard to see but I definitely used the option to give myself dark circles under my eyes, haha!! I’m just always sleep deprived so I feel like they’re permanent fixtures on my face (bless my glasses for helping me hide them). Made myself wear a turtleneck and cardigan because it’s still cold where I’m at 😑. And ironically, I was actually drinking bubble tea/boba as I was making this! 😆 Can I just say, I wish my hair looked that good right now, though?? Public health social distancing rules means I can’t get a haircut and I badly need one!!

Tamaki battles his inner thoughts as he watches a new student put on the moves with Haruhi. The longer he watches their interactions the more enraged he becomes. Finally, after the male character confronts Tamaki about his intentions towards Haruhi, Tamaki jumps into action to prevent the male character from asking out Haruhi on a date.

Things That I Loved:

I love when authors give Tamaki more credit with his inner feelings towards Haruhi. He isn’t just a dumb character that is completely unaware of his feelings but he is actually pretty aware just going around things in the wrong way. I liked being inside his head for this story and watching his attitude shift the more time he watched the male character.

Things I Wanted More Of:

I think it would have been interesting to get a little bit more of Tamaki’s perspective on Haruhi’s reactions to the things the male character was doing. “She’s just trying to be nice,” or “that will never work.” If Tamaki really does know her well he could read her body language or hear her tone of voice and know exactly what she is thinking.

And that's when Tamaki knew for sure that Gustave was nothing but a lecherous pig out to steal Haruhi's virtue.

Would I Read Again?

Yes, I think I would end up reading this again at some point. It is well constructed and the plot is easy enough to follow. As stated before I love getting a peek into Tamaki’s thoughts. And let’s be honest. Tamaki is 100% jealous boy!
