HUGE Victory for the Vaquita

On Friday, July 22, 2016, U.S. President Barack Obama and Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto committed to intensify bilateral cooperation to protect the critically endangered vaquita porpoise.

The following actions will be taken:

The use of gillnets will be permanently banned throughout the range of the vaquita in the Gulf of Mexico;

Both the U.S. and Mexico will take steps to help stop the illegal fishing and trade in totoaba swim bladders;

“Vaquita-safe” fisheries will be established;

Alternative fishing gear which does not result in the entanglement of vaquita will be developed;

A long-term program will be launched to remove and permanently dispose of illegal and derelict fishing gear from vaquita habitat in the upper Gulf of California.
