Grime at The Nest
Friday is the beginning of a lively four days and what better way to start it off than a grimey night in party/kebab/fixie central - Dalston. The Nest is welcoming Elijah & Skilliam, Lil Silva and Faze Miyake. . . (and others that I've not hear of) to a right royal knees up. It's an extremely strong looking lineup, artists complimenting each other well, bringing their own unique sounds and representing varying elements of grime and bass music. Lil Silva is the perfect person to get the girls skanking rather than smoking and provides those danceable, bubbly riddims that are always needed but especially on a grime heavy night. Elijah & Skilliam will bring the grime, I always felt that they played it a bit safe with their sets but recently they have been experimenting and taking more risks, I've seen them playing R&B, 90's sing-a-long stuff and some classic grime and I guess this is what comes with getting more established and respected. It's Faze Miyake that I'm most excited about though, I saw him a while ago and it was apparently his first show and he smacked, playing banger after banger, so god knows what he'll do now he's had more experience, he DJ's with a calmness while playing some of the most hype tunes and this contrast is great to experience . He'll definitely bring the hype and hopefully M.I.K will be coming with him too because they always go well together. See you there.
Urban Nerds 5th Birthday - Scala - TONIGHT
Urban Nerds celebrate five years of crazy line-ups in London, as we pull out all the stops to hand pick a diverse set of underground UK bass, dubstep, grime and funky acts on one of our broadest cross-sections of talent yet…we’re marking 5 with a return to the deep underground sounds that we kicked off with back in 2007! Grime veterans Newham Generals – MCs D Double E and Footsie – have gone from strength to strength in recent years. This is an act known for their lyrical aptitude and versatile musical styling that sees them successfully straddling the genres of grime and dubstep. Gorgon City is the brand new powerful collaboration between Foamo and RackNRuin. These UK bass producers come together in style to produce big sounds – for this highly anticipated new project. Klashnekoff, who made his name in the underground UK hip hop scene with singles such as ‘Murda’ in 2004, boosts the bass ranks, alongside Rudimental, whose ‘Feel the Love’ is currently Radio 1’s Mistajam’s JAM HOT track of the week. Urban Nerds’ newest resident, Rinse FM’s Marcus Nasty is undoubtedly one of the pioneers of the UK funky movement. He’ll be kicking up the pace with MCs PSG and Sharky P, while fellow Nerds resident Rattus Rattus will deliver one of his smash-out sets hosted by drum ‘n’ bass legend MC, IC3. Room 2 presents two of the hottest UK grime labels: No Hats No Hoods versus King Pigeon Records. Bringing together the finest from both camps, DJs Warrior One, Rude Kid, Magic, Eastwood, Guerilla Speakerz, Lenkemz, Murlo and a live PA of ‘Beautiful’ by Jae Ella will keep the vibe rude and bouncy. Hyping up the crowd are MCs of the moment, Kozzie, Scrufizzer, Trilla, Chronik, Merky Ace and Roachee.
Big H - Up In Smoke Big H is out which can only be a good thing for grime and if this tunes anything to go by, then 'Fire & Smoke' should be alot.
SighTracked x We Are SME Ft. Koder, Drifter, Little Dee & Kozzie
Kozzie - Yeah (Remix Ft. Merky Ace) So much better than the original, both the song and the video.
Logan Sama - JME, Tempa T & Frisco Great to see Tempz back, with fresh bars but the same level of hype. Didn't really need JME's constant echoing but apart from that, a lively 7 minutes. Catch Tempa T, JME and Rude Kid at XOYO on the 1st June . . .with loads of sweaty guys from Milton Keynes shouting NEXT HYPE.
Donaeo - Pow I actually really like this, a nice little homage and a reminder of some legendary bars. I like what he does with JME's Pow 2012 bars but the Flirta ones are the best, they're all really inventive, he keeps you guessing and I wanted it to go on for longer. Must have been annoying changing that many times though !!
Ten Dixon - Lengman This tune has been my guilty pleasure for a few weeks now, if I've got a spare few minutes, it's on. I tried to just ignore it and move on to something else, something more mature, something more melodic, something more layered, something less angry but I couldn't. I CAN'T STOP PLAYING IT.
Devlin - Westwood Freestyle
Jammer - Big Man Ft Viper, Scratchy, Sox & Flowdan ... and others of less importance Nothing will beat the original Duppy but it's an entertaining little refix, good to see Scratch on there. 'I'm a big man but i'm not 40'
Devlin - London City (Part 2) Well part 1 was a smash and this follow up is no different, two years on and it's equally powefull, if not more. We see a reflective Devz, looking back on his emergence from the streets of Dagenham to 'a nice little drum where I don't hear sirens when I'm sleeping' despite all the changes in his life; his success and fame, he says that you'll still find him in the 'grime, hussle and bussle' and while alot of MC's play that card, you can't help but believe Devz . Devlin is still one of the best lyricists out there. He creates great images with his lyrics, something lacking in grime and this tune is full of these. His mixtape 'The Directors Cut' is free and available from http://www.officialdevlin.com/ it's not Tales From The Crypt standard but he has kept it grimey and there's a feature from Ghetts on there, a partnership that has created some of the best, complete grime tunes in the past. Anyone who missed out on Part 1, have a gander below.
Urban Nerds celebrate their 5th Birthday with a Grimey lineup
Saturday 26th May will see the Urban Nerds gang take over the Scala, Kings Cross. They're celebrating five strong years of heavy bass nights, sticky floors and long queues. Believe me, Scala will feel like a palace compared to some of the venues I've been to Urban Nerds raves at but that's no bad thing, UN (I'll call em that from now, I'm not talking United Nations) have always been about the music, they have managed to showcase some of the best 'underground' acts from the U.K, I remember seeing Skepta and then OG'z at consecutive UN new years raves, those are collectors items. To set the scene, these weren't quick PA's at Oceana or Proud o2, these were full blown sets . . .in a car park in Shoreditch. That was then, this is now. UN have experimented a bit recently with their sounds but for the 5th birthday they have decided to 'return to the deep underground sounds that we kicked off with back in 2007!' they have taken it back, gone there, gone in, flipped the script pulled out the stops ... whatever you want to call it. The headliners and rightly so, are Newham Generals, always good live, they've got singalongs, a bag of reloads and can draw for old and new material, they've even got that dubsteppy stuff ... if you're that way inclined. The vid below shows them back in 2008 to give you a lil taster.
The recent exposure of C4 and Preditah got a bit much for me, they're both ard, don't get me wrong but I needed a little break from hearing them every five mins and I think by the 26th, my rehab will be complete and I'll definitely be back on them. It's great to see them acknowledged and on the lineup because they do represent a future of grime and while you have to put the likes of the Newham Gens on, you also have to keep the conveyor belt moving and hearing Preditah's tunes in the rave is always a great experience. Would have loved to see Pressure on there as well though.
So that's two of the most exciting grime duos out there, now onto the 'No Hats No Hoods' representatives, this is the part that made my mind up for me. Kozzie, Scrufizzer and Merky Ace; three of the most hype 'New Wave' MC's at the moment, currently making names for themselves. At the other end of the scale, you've got Roachee and Chronik, experienced MC's, been doing it for a while longer, just got to hope Chronik doesn't hog the mic too much, although whenever I see him, the crowd are always loving it, he is a hype merchant. Looking forward to seeing Roachee alot though, specially after his recent 'After Hours' set, you could probably see the other MC's every weekend up and down the country but Roachee is a little harder to find and I haven't seen him on set before. Supplying the beats will be Rude Kid and Magic, once again UN showing an appreciation of grime by showcasing two no nonsense grime DJ's, it would have been easy to settle for someone with a more commercial name but they kept it grimey.
That's the grime highlights for me but the likes of Klashnekoff, Rudimental, Warrior One, Marcus Nasty and Get Low Cartell will be letting everyone know that there's other genres out there and I'm sure a few extras will be brought along. If this didn't convince you then god knows what will, can get your tickets here > https://urban-nerds.ticketabc.com/promoter/urban-nerds/
Face Off 2 - Lay-Z, Frisco & Jammer Never really been a massive fan of Lay- Z but he's bareable on this tune, it's quite a live one actually, a little three way rally with the MC's working off each other. Nice to see the normal grime song structure scrapped and replaced by the exciting chopping between all three MC's, could be used alot more, it feels much more fresh and alive. Despite his struggle with the 'bally', it's Frisco that gets me noddin my head the most.
Wiley - One Way TV Freestyle Wiley has spent this week reminding everyone why he's the godfather. The 'Step' freestyles have been getting so much love and show Wiley at his best, they are a little nod to the doubters out there. Wiley's work rate and the quality of what he's brought out is also a little slap in the face of Desperado, who came with a slightly desperate send a few weeks ago; 'Wiley aint the King of grime no more' see below , Wiley didn't need to reply, the proof is surely in his recent releases.
Scrabble - Elro, Manga & JME I always liked Elro's SB:TV sessions but didn't know if his witty wordplay and quirky observations were enough to complete a whole album but he's released the 'Porcelain Corpse' for download and this is one of the best tunes, he has adapted his style much, you still have to listen to it a few times to clock all his bars. It's no coincidence that he has chosen Manga and JME to feature, they share his style with the skippy flow and detailed bars of wordplay making you think and pay a bit more attention than your average tune.
I don't like - JME, Jammer & Skepta Ok, it's not grime but it's quite a jokes video and the beats hard. Jammer's bars get me the most gassed while Skepta plays with his flow a bit.
