♡ Free Crochet Pattern for Dyke Bookmark ♡
This is my first time writing a pattern, so please go easy on me! Feel free to reach out with any questions you have :-)
If you're familiar with filet crochet, you can just work off the image above. If not, I'll go into more detail about the technique below, plus the directions for the border.
(If you don't have exactly these sizes of thread/hook, that's fine. The most important thing is that whatever hook size you choose, you use the corresponding thread size.)
Pattern Note: This pattern is worked in groups of 3 double crochets. This means that a filled-in square will be made up of 3 double crochets total (not 4, as is often the case with filet crochet patterns).
2. Skip 5 chains, and make 1dc into the 6th chain from the hook. This completes the first open mesh square (marked with a red circle in the chart). We will be reading the chart from left to right for this row. Note that we will alternate directions for every row.
3. Moving from left to right through the chart, create open mesh squares when you come across a white square, and create solid mesh squares when you come across a black square. The method for each of these is described below:
4. To create an open mesh square (the white squares in the chart): 1dc to create first post, ch1, skip 1 ch (or 1dc) from previous row, 1dc into the next ch/dc to create second post. Shown below in chart form.
5. To create a solid mesh square (the black squares in the chart): 1dc to create first post, 1dc to fill the square, 1dc to create the second post. Shown below in chart form.
6. Go through the first row of the chart, making open or solid mesh squares where appropriate. When you come to the end of the row, your last dc post should be in the last chain. Ch4, turn.
7. Work through the second row of the chart in the same way, this time reading the chart from right to left.
8. Repeat for the rest of the rows.
9. When you complete the last row, turn the piece so that the text reads normally from left to right.
10. 5dc into the 2nd dc post from the edge. (Marked with a blue dot in the chart.)
11. Sl st into next dc post. Sc in the middle of the next square. Ch3, Sl st into the sc. Sl st into the next dc post.
12. 5 dc into the next dc post, sl st into next dc post, sc in the middle of the next square, ch3, sl st into the sc, sl st into the next dc post. Shown in chart form below.
13. Repeat step above until you have crocheted around the border of the entire piece.
14. Sl st to join, tie off. Sew in your ends.
For the best results, I would recommend blocking your piece. Other than that, you're done! I hope you like it!
Please let me know how things go, and if there's anything that needs clarifying. Happy crocheting :-)
