I found a fawn..
It must be my lucky day!
You found a fawn?! That's awesome! Did you get any pictures? Oh, but I guess that mighta scared it away.
So I hafta go to this "school" thing now, too?
You know, I think we have very much in common, Bambi, especially in thinking the others are the odd ones! I don’t know why but a lot of the boys seem to have this thought that flowers are “sissy” things, to quote them, or only to be used in order to get something from girls, which is just terrible! Flowers should be appreciated in their own right, not just as something to use to attempt to bribe girls into dates! I honestly don’t understand, but they’re the ones who are losing out, I believe - and anyway, it just leaves more flowers for you and I! I do so love daisies myself, and roses, and violets… oh, but I’m going on! Have you got a favourite flower yourself?
Actually, I haven’t - I usually go from school to the tea shoppe, I have a little job there, so I haven’t had the time to go fully exploring besides around the edge of the forest a little. I haven’t been to the beach, I didn’t even know we had a pier! Oh no, we get Saturdays and Sundays off, but still, five out of seven days a week is still terribly dreadful! Well, I should like it if you go because I could speak to you then but contrariwise I should prefer you not to go as it would be detestable to force you to do something you shouldn’t like! It’s all such a conflicting conundrum, this school thing… although I have to say, I am picking up some rather good words from the English lessons. They aren’t bad at all.
Why, you dream about talking animals too? Bambi, this is splendid news! You know, I thought I was going quite mad - and talking rabbits! Goodness, I dream of a talking rabbit myself! He’s a funny little fellow, with a waistcoat and a pocket watch, which is quite curious, don’t you think? I’ve never before seen a rabbit with a pocket watch nor a waistcoat to put it in yet here I am dreaming about one! And that’s not to mention the dodo bird, or the lizard, or the fawn, or the unicorn - unicorns, imagine that! And the unicorn said he thought little girls were the myths, and the unicorns the real ones! And that’s just the animals, that’s not to speak of the chess people or the royalty or even just the ones at the tea party; oh Bambi, I’m so glad you know what it’s like! Everyone looks at me so funnily when I bring up my dreams, it’s nice to know someone knows what it’s like!
…oh dear, I did go on quite a bit, didn’t I? I’m sorry, I simply didn’t think - do yoou know, a hare told me if you didn’t think, you shouldn’t talk? Imagine, lessons in manners from a hare as mad as march! I should hope that that isn’t part of my memories, it would be a very odd thing indeed!
Oh I shall! It’s been puzzling me greatly these past few days but I feel it’s the sort of question only a madman could answer, so perhaps the answer may not be what I want at all. Do the animals in your dreams ever ask you such bizarre questions?
Hmm... I-I like a lotta flowers, so it's hard to choose. Have you ever seen the flower stall outside Bare Necessities? That's where I work, so I see heaps of flowers all the time. Maybe that's why I like flowers more than other boys... or maybe it's 'cause of that that they let me work there in the first place? I like daisies too, an' sunflowers, but I think my real favourites are the daffodils. They're just so bright an' happy, an' it'd be amazing to just run through a whole field of them! That's what I'll do if I ever find one. I know what you mean by boys only using flowers to make girls do what they want though... boys only ever come to my flower stall if they've got a girl on their arm, or if they're about to go see one. At least the girls usually appreciate the flowers, right?
Aw, but then you really should go! Aside from the forest, the beach an' the pier are my favourite places on the island. I think you'll like the pier; there's all sorts of rides. Oh hey, you know, they just opened a spinning tea cups ride! I-I haven't been on it yet, 'cause it kinda looks like I'll feel sick afterwards, but if you like tea then it'd be kinda fun? I s'pose you'd hafta try and cram all the fun, outside-of-school things on Saturdays and Sundays then, but that sounds tiring! I-I'd like to talk to you more too, Alice, so I guess there is one good thing about school, which is that I'll be able to see a lotta different people every day. I-It is a bit of a... conundrum? Sorry, I don't think I understood much of what you just said. ...That's prob'ly a sign that if there's lessons I do need to go to, it'd be the English ones, heh.
You have rabbits that talk in your dreams too? Oh, but mine doesn't ever wear clothes, I don't think. I'd sure like to see a rabbit in a waistcoat though, that'd be pretty funny! He sounds better dressed than I am. Gee, you see an awful lotta things in your dreams. Maybe I just don't remember enough of mine, I dunno. I have fawns in my dreams too, an' they talk as well; I guess in dreams, everything can talk. Unicorns... those are those weird horses with somethin' stickin' up outta their heads, right? That’s… that’s really cool, Alice! I wish I had dreams like that. They sound a lot more interestin' than mine are, even if mine do have talkin' animals too. People give you funny looks? Maybe they're just jealous of your dreams, like I am!
It's okay; I don't mind when people talk more than I do, I'm more of a listener anyway. Heh, I don't think it's that odd to be given lessons from a hare, at least in dreams. No, they don't really ask me questions... although there's an owl who loves warnin’ me about gettin' "twitterpatted", an' his eyes go huge! H-he's kind of startin' to scare me.
So I hafta go to this "school" thing now, too?
How old are you? Aww, you can’t swim, either? I thought everyone could swim- but I’ve met a few people now who actually can’t. It’s so weird, I guess it’s because like, my whole family can and love to swim. People watch? Don’t you like to go to all the totally awesome stores there and just try on all the clothes? Yeah, the pier does but- mine is like, a love tunnel type thing? So it’s for all the lovers of the island to go on and be all romantic and UGH why can’t I have that too?
Oh yeah, I do! I’m sorry Bambi, I know a lot of people don’t seem to on this island, it’s kinda weird but I guess I should appreciate the fact I like do have one. Maybe yours will show up one day, cutie? It’s super nice! Although we can get in fights and stuff over make up or someone stealing someone’s shoe or whatever. We’re all girls you see. Just eight girls living with our dad. We should totally be on a TV show.
I'm seventeen! So the HQ says I only gotta go to school for a year, but still, that's an awful long time. Nup, can't swim; I think I can sorta float an' maybe paddle around a bit, but I wouldn't be able to properly swim. I prob'ly should learn... seein' as how we're on an island. Oh, I don't really go clothes shopping much... I kind of don't see the point in havin' so many clothes. You can only wear a few at a time anyway! A love... tunnel. I have nooo idea what that would be. Guess I musta missed when I went to the pier before. But I s'pose it's not like I woulda had someone to go with either. Aw, if you really want something like that, I-I'm sure you'll find someone soon?
You don't hafta be sorry. I can't really miss what I don't remember ever havin' anyway, right? But yeah, maybe they will. It does sound nice to have parents, an' brothers an' sisters. Wow... you have seven sisters? I kinda feel bad for your dad now...girls are awful loud sometimes.
I don't think I'm likin' this school thing
Huh, really? When I got here they said I gotta go for at least a year! Maybe if we just don’t go they’ll think we just changed our mind or somethin’.
Same to you, Bambi! Yeah I’m pretty new. I take it you’ve been here a while?
A year?! But- but that's ages! An' we hafta go five days a week; at least, that's what Alice said. Aw, we'd be spendin' more time in this school than wherever we'd actually wanna be! But... but I don't wanna get anyone mad.
Oh, then welcome to the island! Well, yeah, I-I s'pose I have. I think I arrived at the end of the last summer, maybe? Which is why I was so surprised when they told me I had to go to school now. Not that I'm complainin' 'bout not having to go until now.
So I hafta go to this "school" thing now, too?
Oh, I completely agree! Especially when all the daisies are out - just complete fields of white and yellow, like an ocean from another world! It’s an absolutely splendid sight… although I have to admit, most boys here wouldn’t ever admit to liking flowers. You seem to be an odd one Bambi. I think I like you.
Well, I can’t say that I feel more at home in a forest but I certainly do feel a lot better outside than inside, that’s for sure. The teachers at the school aren’t entirely bad people, I will admit, but they just don’t understand that staying inside all day isn’t something we want and it just makes the whole situation horrendous. I did ask my friend Marie to speak to them about it though, and she’s one of those girls everybody listens to, so perhaps we can take lessons outside when she finishes speaking to them, wouldn’t that be lovely?
Oh dear, that wasn’t very kind of them. Perhaps you should bring jam with you next time you go out? A dollop of jam to the nose tends to calm a doormouse down as quick as a flash, perhaps it will work just as well on possums! And I know exactly what you mean - I’ve been here for quite a few weeks now, but sometimes it feels like I just woke up here yesterday. Have you ever the feeling that you almost remember something when you sleep, Bambi? And have you any idea why a raven is like a writing desk? I don’t know how that silly little question got into my head, but I simply cannot get it out! Do you have any idea how to answer it?
O-oh, ummm... t-thank you, Alice. I think I like you too. But I-I dunno though, to me it seems like they're the ones who're odd. Maybe it's just 'cause I work with 'em, but I think you'd have to be plain ol' silly not to like flowers. They're pretty, they smell nice, an' they come in all sorts of different colours. You don't have to be a girl to notice stuff like that. So what could anyone find wrong with likin' 'em?
Yeah, I s'pose anywhere outside is better than bein' inside, really. The beach is fun too, an' so's the pier! Have you seen much of the island yet, Alice? Gee, I hope you haven't been spendin' every day in school, that would be pretty awful. Oh, it would be great if all the students could spend sometime outside as well as inside! I sure hope your friend Marie comes through. It might make me not so sad about having to go.
Jam? On their noses? That sounds kinda strange, an' I'm not sure the possums would like that very much, but I guess I could try it next time. They're awfully fast though, so I might not have the chance. Wait, do you have funny dreams too, Alice? Oh, d-don't laugh at me, but sometimes I have these dreams where I'm talkin' to all these different animals. Pretty funny, huh? An' it feels like I've done it before. B-but there's no way it's a memory, because I don't know how to speak rabbit. Or skunk. ...M-maybe we just feel like we're rememberin' it because we wanna know what our lives were like before.
A raven... an' a writing desk? Umm... gee, I don't have a clue. Tell me the answer if you find out, okay?
I don't think I'm likin' this school thing
Yeah, exactly! We should have a choice whether we wanna go or not. I’d much rather be out in the woods. I’m Copper by the way. Who’re you
You know, actually I just met this girl, Adella, who thinks we can choose whether to go to school or not anyway. So maybe we’re both worryin’ over nuthin’! I was thinkin’ ‘bout just not goin’, an’ if they really want me to go I’m sure they’ll just ask again!
Copper? Well, it’s nice to meetcha, Copper! I’m Bambi. Are you new, ‘cause I don’t think I’ve seen you around before.
I don't think I'm likin' this school thing
Can’t I just go out and play in the woods all day?
T-that's just what I want! I dunno why these people think they can just lock us up indoors all day, when there's the forests and the meadows to explore. It's sort of- well, it is pretty mean. Right?
So I hafta go to this "school" thing now, too?
If you’ve already got a job then it shouldn’t be that big a deal, right? I don’t really know how all this school stuff works since I never had to go, which is pretty totally awesome, but like I said, my cousin Mel seems to think it’s the worst thing ever. Nooo, I don’t think anything will happen to you, Bambi! Well like- I can’t promise that, but I really don’t think anything bad would happen. If they forgot about you needing to go earlier then why would they make a big fuss if you don’t go ever again? Have you even been yet?
Yeaah, I think I’m too old or something, which I guess is good in this situation since NO SCHOOL YAY! Well~ I like to just go to the mall or play music or sunbathe on the beach or swim in the ocean, just fun things like that! But instead of school I have a super lame job on the pier.
Aww, thanks- I guess? I agree, It’s weird though, I’m convinced my parents are obsessed with the letter A, my whole family is named A things- except Mel, obviously oops. It’s no prob!
No, I haven't been there yet... just been hearin' a lotta terrible stories 'bout the place. Your cousin Mel isn't the only one who thinks it's the worst thing ever. An' I guess you're right, they prob'ly won't mind, since none of the people there have ever even seen me. Welp, guess I'm not goin' to school! Whoo-hoo!
Aw, wish I was too old for it too. I like the sound of all of those things though! It's always fun to go the beach, even if I can't swim, an' even the mall's not so bad. I like people-watching there, an' there's always something interesting and new to see. Why do you think your job's super lame? What is it? It can't be that bad, the pier's got all those rides on it, right?
Your whole family? So you have a family here? Huh, I don't think I've met many people here with one of those... an' I don't have one, I think. What's it like, havin' a family?
So I hafta go to this "school" thing now, too?
That’s the question I find myself asking every day! Perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad if only we were let outside to study, but instead they keep us indoors and the classrooms are so very small, with so many people! Even during the lunch break you have to stay on the school property, but it is nice to get outside even for a little while. Sometimes just taking a quick walk is enough to clear your head, but sometimes I wish I could just run past off the fences and into another world where history books don’t exist and lessons can only be taken if you can stand on your head. I wouldn’t be able to take the lessons anyway, and then I could just run about in the meadows all day, doesn’t that sound wonderful?
Mice that live in trees, that sounds fantastical! Imagine you could get little mice small enough to fit in your pocket? They’d be just as fantastical as the ones that live in the trees. Are they cute, the possums, or are they terrible snappy creatures?
Oh, I do love picture books - books without any form of illustration are so dull, don’t you think?
They stole your bag? Well, that was terribly impolite of them, I do say! Did they at least have the decency to give it back? I don’t much like the sound of these little tree mice at all, to tell the truth, they sound quite horrible indeed.
Bambi, what a lovely name! It’s absolutely splendid to meet you, Bambi - have you been on the island for very long?
It is wonderful; runnin' all over the meadows is one of my absolute favourite things to do! Especially when all the pretty flowers are in bloom; the whole meadow smells amazing. The people in charge of this "school" must be awfully hard-hearted if they're willin' to keep all the kids on the island locked up inside like that. I can't stand spendin' just a few hours stuck at home, even with books to read an' music to listen to; it'd be a total nightmare to have to stay inside all day. Sometimes I think I feel more at home in the forest than I do in my actual home.
They can be very cute, 'specially the little baby ones, but the big ones can get awfully angry an' hissy if they feel threatened. Most animals do, though, an' I s'pose I'd feel the same way if a big ol' stranger just came trompin' through my home. I guess books do look nicer when they have pictures. An' most books on animals an' plants have pictures anyway, so I'm happy.
Yeah, they're pretty cheeky, possums. They didn't give it back, but they did leave it on the ground. After they were done eatin' all my food, of course. It's very hard to shoo away hungry possums. I-I wouldn't say they were horrible, but I probably won't go near them with food again.
Hmm... I s'pose I have been on the island for a while, but definitely not as long as some of the others. It feels like I just got here, really.
So I hafta go to this "school" thing now, too?
Oooh, well I don’t know about that. I doubt you’d get into like, any sort of serious trouble or anything.
School does sound soo bad! I’m so glad I don’t have to go, it seems so boring and like, all I hear is the kids complaining about it all the time when they come down to the pier. Also my cousin seems to hate it more than anything.
Aww, it’s okay, and I’m Adella! It’s nice to meet you, Bambi, that’s such a cute name- and yeah, I don’t think we’ve ever talked to eachother before so it’s totally fine.
Well... if you're sure... maybe they really won't mind if I just don't go. All I gotta do is look after the flower stall, so it's not like they'd teach me anything I really need, I s'pose. You promise that nuthin' will happen to me, right? Aw, you don't have to go? That's lucky. What do you like to do then, if you don't mind me askin'? Um, t-thanks! Yeah, a-a lot of people have said that to me... I still don't really get it. Adella's a nice name too, I-I think. An' thanks for lettin' me know that school isn't a thing we have to go to. That's a relief.
So I hafta go to this "school" thing now, too?
Awww, you have to go to school? That like, totally sucks! If they forgot about telling you, isn’t that a sign you could just, I dunno~ maybe skip? Seems like they wouldn’t miss having you around but- Oh jellyfish, that sounded kinda harsh, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean it like that!
Well like, you could do that but nobody else would be around or anything, wouldn’t that be boring?
That's okay, I didn't take it that way anyway. I guess you're right, but what happens if you don't go to school when you have to? Isn't that breakin' the rules? An' suppose someone does notice... I'd be in trouble. School sounds awful enough... I don't even wanna know what their idea of a punishment is.
...Oh, right... I didn't think about that. That does sound awful lonely. Gee, I was really proud of myself for comin' up with that plan too. I-I don't think I've ever talked to you before... right? My name's Bambi, What's yours?
So I hafta go to this "school" thing now, too?
Oh, you were very lucky. It’s hardly fun at all, just stuffy little rooms and tiny wooden desks and everything is so very dull! They do let you out for a little while during the lunch break but it’s terrible, all crowded corridors and books without pictures, and then they give you work to do when you go home! You should try and stay away for as long as you can, it’s positively dreadful in there!
Like a possum, imagine that! I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a thing before, what are they like? And I’m sorry, how terribly rude of me for not introducing myself! My name is Alice, Alice Liddell, and it’s very nice to meet you.
Oh! Possums aren’t those little doormice in the trees, are they?
W-wow... these stories are not makin' me feel any better... So school is for working and learning, right? How come we can't do that outside, where there's fresh air, an' sunshine? I really don't wanna be cooped up in a little room. It sounds just like bein' in one of the cages at the zoo, lunch break included.
I s'pose possums are kinda like mice, 'cept they grow a bit bigger, and they do live in trees. I didn't know what they were either at first, but it was easy enough to find out what they were from some picture books at the library. Oh, um... they're really shy, w-well, up until you shake some fruit at 'em, then they'll follow you, an' steal your bag lookin' for more. ...Not that that happened to me.
It's nice to meetcha too, Alice! I'm Bambi.
So I hafta go to this "school" thing now, too?
‘Spose they musta just forgotten about me when it first opened up; gee, that was lucky. I remember hearin’ all the kids on the island complainin’ ‘bout it a while ago, an’ is it really that bad? Do you really have to stay indoors all day until they let you go? Why would anyone do something like that?
...Hey, if I become nocturnal like the possums in the forest, maybe I can just sleep through it, an’ do everything at night?
❝bambi❞ AGE: 17 ✖ MOVIE: BAMBI ✖ FC: ANDREW GARFIELD ✖ TAKEN.
BEFORE THE ISLAND.
Bambi grew up known as the prince of the forest, and despite this he had a bit of a rough time adjusting to things. It honestly took a while for him to walk properly. But he quickly made friends who helped him along his way, specifically Thumper and Flower. He also met Faline, but the two got off to a rocky start, as he felt rather annoyed by her advances on him. Eventually Bambi adjusted to life in the forest, and he lived happily with his mother. Unfortunately, that happiness didn’t last long. Hunters entered the forest, and his mother was killed in the process. Forced to live without his mother, Bambi was saddened by this, but he eventually pulled himself together. With the coming spring and the twitterpated feeling all the forest animals went through, Bambi found himself falling in love with Faline. Eventually the two got together and had children of their own, and Bambi became king of the forest like his father was before him, keeping peace in the forest for his family and friends. But when the storm came, that peace didn’t last for long.
ON THE ISLAND.
As it is, Bambi is already a rather shy and nervous boy, but tack on waking up with no memories, and Bambi didn’t exactly take the island too well. Bambi is a bit naïve and innocent. He’s very shy and more often than not, he can be easily frightened. However, deep down Bambi is a lot braver than he sometimes seems. He knows when he needs to stay strong and won’t hesitate to do so. Bambi also has a very curious nature, and he can’t help but explore the island frequently. The more he does, the more he realizes the island isn’t such a bad place. He especially loves being in the forest among the other animals when he isn’t running his flower stand near the hospital. Unfortunately, there are a few reasons for him to be afraid on the island, such as Gaston who’s frightened poor Bambi out of his mind with all his hunting ‘trophies’. Island life has treated him well so far. Though he would like the people so careless about hurting animals to turn themselves around, and is even starting a club to stand up against animal cruelty.
