we will never lessen suicide and mental illness under capitalism. not only is it documented that during a financial crisis more people commit suicide, but all treatment for mental illness is focused on preparing you to work productively.

some mental illnesses, like schizophrenia and developmental disorders, cannot be easily helped as much as anxiety and depression. except capitalism makes all these mental illnesses worse, because our worth is tied to our work, and if you can’t work, well, you’re on the streets.

it’s common that a homeless person is mentally ill, or has developed illness through that stressful situation, like drug or alcohol addiction. instead of acknowledging these issues, we see so many people say “why should I care for the homeless when a homeless person might spend money on drugs?” and treat it as an individual flaw in someone’s character that is their fault instead of an obvious result of a stressful and dangerous living situation.

that’s the scariest thing capitalism does, treat everything as the fault of the individual’s character flaws. this leads well-off people to be less compassionate for those suffering.
