the problem with parents is that they are undiagnosed
i made a post like this before but I can't find it now. so. I'll just redo it.
What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?
It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.
My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict đ
I remember walking down the street and seeing a sign protesting George W. Bushâs war on Iraq, so I think that.
1992 Los Angeles riots. My family was living in LA, we were actually just preparing to move so it's this weird mess of boxes and burning and my parents being outraged (not surprised) at the outcome of the trial. I feel like that being the first news story I can remember is very on brand since it was my parents who taught me how to protest.
Iran hostage crisis.

Mostly because it was part of the news, every night, for 14 months (444 days). And I remember when it ended, and they got to go home.
I remember Diana & Charles getting married, bc I remember how big the train on her wedding dress was. I would have been... 3 or 4.
Either the first Moon landing or a military funeral with full honors -- no idea who it was for, but it was on the TV.
This is your reminder today that Irene Adler in the original Conan Doyle story is literally not a criminal. She never commits a crime.
Nor is she a seductress in any kind of negative or manipulative sense - she has a mutual relationship with a powerful man who then breaks up with her, and afterwards she keeps protection against him in the form of evidence that the relationship existed. She HAS blackmail material, she even waves it at him threateningly because he treated her like shit, but she never even uses it.
Irene Adler is not a thief, femme fatale, or blackmailer. She's just a cool lady that wants to be left alone.
@delphi-star You do recall correctly!! She does not give a shit about that man! She's happily married! She tipped him for being a witness at her wedding!
If your Sherlock Holmes adaptation has a character whose identifying qualities are that she is a seductive criminal in love with Holmes, you have created a character that is basically the literal opposite of Irene Adler and you should name her something else.
She's also -- and I cannot stress this enough -- from New Jersey. IMO this is the single most important detail missing from all the adaptations -- IRENE ADLER IS FROM NEW JERSEY.
Please just once in my life I would like to see this adapted faithfully it would be the funniest fucking thing ever.
And she's an opera singer, so you know that going through the nightmare hell gauntlet that is working in the performing arts has made her unwilling to take any shit ïżŒ
reblog if you remember what it felt like to walk into blockbuster
If youâre reblogging this maybe also do a couple stretches. Gods know our back and shoulders could use it.
The aging of the Tumblr userbase does more for my stretching routine then anything else.
Thank you, my generational cousins. I will go and stretch now.
Got my stickers from @nerdykeppie !
Work conference swag water bottle before and after:
Much better now!
Okay, but that's a PERFECT use of that sticker in context.
[images: a water bottle without and with a NerdyKeppie sticker covering up the logo, with text below it in both photos; the sticker reads, "Justice is a persistence predator", and the bottle reads, "Shape the future with confidence".]
thank you for the image descriptions @alexseanchai

Alright tell me in the tags, whatâs Your Poem? That poem you heard once and it has dwelt within you ever since?
Mystra - for indeed it was her image I conjured - commands all magic. Salvation, if such a thing exists, is hers to bestow - or withhold.

Spouse really tried to do this during the work-related convention this week. đ
A year or so ago I went to wood carving club with a bruised eye from my dog slamming his nose into my eyesocket and like every old lady there pulled me aside at some point to ask if my partner hit me here are some of the solutions they had in case he did.
-Replacing his vitimens with poision
- getting her brother to invite him out onto his boat and then killing him and dumping him in the ocean and saying he got drunk and fell off.
- get tboned with him in the passenger seat and then once he was in the hospital theres all kinds of easy ways to kill him like not washing my hands after a poop and then touching his wound casually.
-replacing his drink of choice with moonshine!?
- take him on a hike thats locally notorious for a rapid otter attacking hikers and once he had rabies I could just kill him any ol way and say self defense.
-One lady just cheerfully informed me she had a gun and only a few years left anyway

My mom's advice was "wait until he passes out and shove an icepick into his temple".
many such foolish cases :)
âHaha remember when murder-hornets were gonna be a thing? What a nothingburger.â
Yes, because the Washington state government activated like a sleeper-cell and ruthlessly, systematically hunted them down and annihilated them.
âY2K came to nothing amirite?â
Yes because an army of software engineers working around the clock, losing sleep, and busting ass till the last minute prevented it from happening.
âRemember the hole in the ozone layer?â
You mean the one that was fixed through rigorous world wide government action?
One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those âitâs gonna be an apocalypseâ disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.
The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.
And I still think thatâs going to happen. I donât know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope wonât help bring it about.
And I refuse to let the cynics own a chunk of my heart.
I worked for a finance-related company in 1999, and saw the huge investments in time and money it took to update their Cobol systems before Y2K. Even better, I also saw how the Board then asked the next year if those expenses were then necessary. I'd already gone on to my next (and current) job when the company imploded under a cloud of Federal indictments. Greed and mismanagement took them down, not the Y2K "bug".
