The photography was made by Heinrich Zille, a local painter, photograph and graphic-artist, famous for his ingenious sketches of the Berlin streetlife and milieu around the change of the century. The view is into the direction of midtown from the Waisenbrücke, which was destroyed in WW2.

Built from 1780-1785, the two towers are called the "German Dome" (in front) and the "French Dome" (in the back). The place of the "Gendarmenmarkt" also gives home to an older church behind the german dome and a concert-hall in the center of the place between the two towers.
