Important note to this is that a big factor in her being blacklisted over this wasn’t about her making Ladybird cry, it was because after that happened Lyndon B Johnson himself tried to intimidate her into apologizing and she refused. 

Johnson was 6′4″ and very square. He was notorious for intimidating people into doing what he wanted by looming over them and getting in their personal space until they got so uncomfortable they just gave in. It was known as “the Johnson Treatment” and he regularly used it on other world leaders.

Eartha Kitt was a full foot shorter than him, a woman, and black. He tried that shit on her and she didn’t fucking flinch. She refused to apologize, maintained that she had nothing at all to apologize for, and left without giving in to his bully behavior. Which infuriated him. By the next day her gigs were being cancelled and club owners were telling her “we got a call from the FBI” which at the time was all that needed to happen.

Earth Kitt was a goddamn icon.
