Elvis Costello
Day 22
I looked up some pictures of Klaus Nomi, and I see what you mean about his style and singing. Not what I wouldāve expected either, but it kinda fits at the same time?
I sadly havenāt had a chance to get my friends any holiday gifts yet so Iāll have to get them stuff later. Iām thinking about getting them plushies of things that they like, such as Pokemon, sharks, and anime plushies. My friends are kind of easy to shop for at least lol
I kinda donāt have much to yap about on my own? But I did get a cd of King Crimsonās Discipline album yesterday! Gave it a listen, and the style of the songs on that album remind me of Talking Headsā style. Not what I expecting considering the vibes of to In The Court of The Crimson King (which I listened to first), but still really intriguing. I hope to get more cds by them.
Iām not sure if youāve noticed, but at the end of every week I try to make my ask prompt a free prompt. I forgot to do that yesterday, so todayās a free prompt day! (Iām bad at keeping up with time.)
Merry Christmas!!! Iām so sorry for being totally inactive these last few days. Hoping to see who you are soon.
Day 21
Aww! I hope the cookies were tasty! Weāre not doing anything super interesting over here. We may watch some Christmas movies but thatās about it.
Iām actually trying to get into REO Speedwagon, but itās kinda hard. I like the songs that I know by them, but somehow itās not enough to get me into looking into their discography more if that makes sense.
Thatās a really interesting question! I kinda agree on David Bowie there too, but for me Iād have to go with Pink Floyd and Cheap Trick. Iām pretty sure both of them are right up my alley, but I donāt feel prepared to start listening to them yet.
Some people say that a personās voice doesnāt match their face. Are there any artists who you think donāt match their own voice? Maybe they carry graceful tunes but the person themself doesnāt look graceful, or they can sing deeper when they look like they shouldnāt be able to.
Hmm⦠that kind of thing happened more often when I was a kid than now, because I donāt really have any assumptions about what people look and sound these days. But Klaus Nomi surprised me. I expected him to be a full on new waver, not a trained opera singer as well. His makeup made up made him look an alien anyway, so I shouldāve been surprised. He was one of the first high profile victims of the AIDS crisis too, may he rest in peace.
I did some last minute holiday shopping today for a white elephant and stocking exchange, what gifts are you excited to give people?
Besides that, this is a free choice day!! Yap about whatever you want
Day 20 (almost 21 where I am, whoops!)
Hope youāre enjoying the Hanukkah party!! Iām very late on sending this ask myself, just got off work (Iām working late shifts).
Havenāt tried herbal tea, though I might get some since we just got out our coffee maker again after we stopped using it for so long. I remember trying peppermint tea before which I really liked!
My favorite Michael Jackson song is a tie between You Rock My World and Sunset Driver. Ghosts is also a really good one that I feel like gets overshadowed by Thriller. I havenāt ever heard Baby Be Mine, but Michael Jackson is one of those artists who has a lot more music than most would realize lol.
A DeYoung and Joel collab would be really interesting! I think Styxās musical style and Billy Joelās writing could make some really unique music! (Also that mixup is funny lol).
Are there any artists youāve listened to that you wanted to like but couldnāt?
I just went to a cookie decorating party a few towns over from me and had a blast. It was great to meet new people and get creative. Anything fun youāre doing to prepare for the holiday?
As for your question, I have a few. Uriah Heep seemed something that could be up my alley but I couldnāt get into them beyond a couple songs. The same applies to REO Speedwagon and Manfred Mann.
Any artists that youāre almost scared to start really listening to because you know their music could change your life? Iām like this for David Bowie.
Day 19
I have some melatonin gummies, but theyāre a bit tough to chew. I think they might need to be thrown out, Iāve had them for a whileā¦
I donāt drink, but seeing the Hot Toddy recipe makes me wanna try warm milk with honey. Hell, I imagine any drink with honey would do good since it seems to be a popular ingredient in drinks made for sleeping.
I started to get confused on what counts and doesnāt count as a concert film, but Iād probably have to say Moonwalker if it counts? I used to love Michael Jacksonās music as a kid, so that was a very prominent movie from my early music taste development.
What are two bands youād like to see do a collaboration together? Maybe they can make a few songs or an album together, or they can cover each otherās music!
I very nearly didnāt get this, Iām at a Hanukkah party and watching the football game, Go Packers.
Have you tried herbal tea? Thatās really helpful for sleep too. Especially with honey.
Moonwalker is a great choice, whatās your favorite Michael Jackson song? Baby Be Mine is very high on my list. Super underrated, especially on an album as star-studded as Thriller.
Iād like to see Dennis DeYoung from Styx and Billy Joel tour together. They have similar vocal qualities and theatrics, as well as a few other similarities. Billy Joel is Jewish but I thought he was Italian, Dennis DeYoung is Italian but I thought he was Jewish! LOL
Day 18
Forgot to say the artist for āJerry Was a Racecar Driverā is Primus. My bad!
Yeah, I donāt think anything can top the hog god. I started off listening to āWhat a Crazy World Weāre Living In,ā and I like the vibe! Something about it feels wholesome in a chaotic way.
Iāve watched the Exorcist, but I had no clue āTubular Bellsā was the theme, which Iām kinda disappointed in myself for. I think I have some ample time tomorrow to listen to the full song, and Iām gonna listen to it in full! Need to fix my attention span some anyways.
Iām new to King Crimson, but I love the Court of the Crimson King album! The self titled song is just heavenly. Makes it almost feel like Iām levitating. Iām glad you got to see them on their last tour! That would make me so sad knowing it was the last tour, but I just know it was extra special.
I hate to keep saying āI donāt knowā to a lot of things, but I donāt have a good answer to a favorite movie documentary. Iāve watched the Purple Rain movie, but itās rare I ever come across music documentaries. The problem with me is I listen to more music than I watch tv, so⦠I guess Iām very uncultured. Thankfully Iām approaching Christmas break, so Iām hoping to remedy that once I have more ample time to just sit down and watch something.
Holy crap, I think I can see where āParalyzedā gets its name from. I imagine thatās what it feels like when youāre getting paralyzed. Ouch. I came up with that question cause I remembered how there was one time āDonāt Stand So Close To Meā by The Police started playing when I was in a Books a Million. REALLY awkward when you know what itās about.
I unfortunately donāt have a prompt question on hand today (Iām really tired and I havenāt been sleeping well), so if thereās anything on your mind or any questions youād like to ask me, go ahead! Christmas is soon!!
Sorry to hear about you not sleeping well, I have that problem too sometimes (restless leg, general insomnia, thinking about everything too much, etc.) but I have some tips.
I have a little bit of melatonin before bed which usually makes me sleep.
If you drink, have a sip of wine or brandy. When I had colds as a kid, my dad would give me a Hot Toddy made with brandy, hot water, and honey. That would put me to sleep reeeeeeeeaaaallll quick. Itās Wisconsin, what were you expecting?
Concert films count as documentaries if you stretch the definition enough. Whatās your favorite concert film? Mine is probably Stop Making Sense. Itās the kind of joy I want to carry with me for the rest of my life.
Day 17
The term novelty song is also new to me, but looking at the definition I kind of know a few! If it counts, āLow Riderā by War is probably my favorite. That background music always cracks me up for some reason. Besides this, āFamilyā by The Interruptors and āJerry Was A Race Car Driverā are some of my other favorites if they count too (pardon me if they donāt!).
I would love to see everyoneās reaction to Ćngus The Prize Winning Hog. Listening to that song was like a slap in the face, but it was a good slap though. Itās funny but still feels The Toxhards took it seriously when making it!
Iāve heard of Tubular Bells! Iāve been meaning to listen to it, but dang thatās a long time stamp. Roundabout is such a good song though!! Iāve listened to it and that intro is amazing. I love the guitar work in general. Besides that, I think the longest Iāve listened to straight without stopping would be King Crimsonās music, especially on their āIn The Court Of The Crimson Kingā album. However, there is a song I know by Dream Theater called āOctavariumā thatās 23 minutes long. Dream Theater has a lot of long music in general that I havenāt gotten around to fully sitting through yet. Iām getting better with that though, so I plan to revisit them!
Heres an interesting questionā whatās a song that you feel like it shouldnāt be played in public, like in stores or restaurants? Iāve heard a few songs in stores before where knowing what the songs are about makes it feel awkward to listen toā¦
Listening to those novelty songs now! As long as theyāre funny (which they are) they count in my book.
I havenāt listened to any other Toxhards songs because I donāt want anything to ruin Ćngus for me. Worship him forever. Some of my favorite novelty songs are Pants on the Ground by General Larry Platt, Rubber Biscuit by the Chips, and What A Crazy World Weāre Living In by Joe Brown. I actually heard that last one for the first time on Elvis Costelloās pre-show playlist in 2021. I loved it so much I had to find the name.
Tubular Bells is a whole experience. You may know it as the theme to the exorcist, but itās so much more than that. It was all recorded by one guy (Mike Oldfield) when he was just 19 years old. If it wasnāt for that song Virgin Records never wouldāve taken off and Richard Branson wouldnāt be in space. Make some time if you want to listen! I love King Crimson, and saw them in concert a few years ago on their last american tour. The way Robert Fripp had his eye on everyone from his high corner of the stage was so cool to see. I also saw a documentary about them at my stateās film festival. Whatās your favorite music documentary?
A song that shouldnāt be played in publicā¦really creative question. Iād have to go with Paralyzed by The Legendary Stardust Cowboy. Itās entirely made up of screaming and a trumpet solo that hits you right in the face. I have it on 45. Hilarious at home, but it definitely wouldnāt go over well at the grocery store or a restaurant.
Day 16
I love arcade games! Sadly the only arcade Iāve been to is around an hour away (at one of our vacation spots), but itās one of my favorite places. Pinball games are super fun too! Definitely one of my favorite things in any given arcade.
Honestly, I had to look up what a rock opera is because Iāve never heard that term before. Looking into the term, I have heard of some rock operas like The Wall, but I donāt think Iāve actually listened to them (boring of me, I know). I didnāt even know that concept existed, but looking at the examples provided the term makes sense.
I donāt know what sounds more fun, the pool or the museum! I hope you get to thoroughly enjoy both of them! It sounds like it would be hard to leave either activity because they just sound that awesome!!
I donāt know why, but Ćgus The Prize Winning Hogās song titled reminds me of Wynonaās Big Brown Beaver. I just feel like theyād be correlated, I dunno.
(Okay Iām listening to that song while I type this and the way it keeps changing tone is keeping me on my toes, holy crap Iām impressed and slightly terrified)
What is the longest song youāve ever listened to? It amazes me how outside of things like concert songs (which are normally long regardless) can get really lengthy. Iāve been used to songs being 3-4 minutes, so finding my songs over 6 minutes has been an adjustment.
Iām so glad you enjoyed Ćngus. One of the only prog rock songs out there that doesnāt take itself too seriously. All hail our new hog overlords.
Whatās your favorite novelty song? My favorite show to do at the radio station is the April fools day special because I get to play the dumbest and funniest songs on the planet. Ćngus will be opening up the 2026 edition!
The longest song I regularly listen to is Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield. Itās 25 minutes long! Being a prog fan I like listening to 8+ minute songs, one of my first ever favorites was Roundabout (8 minutes). Itās kinda funny because Elvis Costelloās songs are rarely over 3 minutes so heās kinda ruining my old attention span. The longest Iāve ever listened to was Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull, that oneās almost an hour. What about you?
Day 15
Hey, I understand! I hope you got to hang out with your mom! Eat some cake if you get the chance too!
The weather here gets really cold, especially in the mornings. I think today in the early morning it was below 20 F, but the weather app said it would feel like 9.
I hope your trip to Illinois is fun! Iāve never been there, or that far I donāt think?
I like to play fighting games, horror games, and⦠general games I guess. Not good with video game genres to be honest. The Italian character I mentioned yesterday is from Tekken, which is one of my favorite fighting games.
What would you say is the weirdest band, artist, or song name youāve seen? Thereās a broad world of music out there with plenty of potential for weird stuff!
Fighting games are a lot of fun!! I tend to to stick to the arcades and my phone as I donāt have any consoles at home, at least not anymore.
I also play some pinball on occasion, still learning the strategy but I do have a stern pinball account where I can track my scores. The older style ones with more bumpers and less screen elements are my go-tos. I even tried playing Tommy-style (blindfolded, earplugs) once and got a pretty decent score! I really had to feel the ball rolling down the table and you can with the older cabinets.
Have you listened to any rock operas (Tommy, The Wall, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Jesus Christ Superstar, etc.)?
Thereās going to be swimming at the christmas party, Iām staying with a family friend who has a half olympic size pool in her house. The next day, weāre all going to the museum of science and industry, which I havenāt been to since I was very young. Iām pretty stoked.
Iāll try to think of a few for each category of weirdā¦
Weirdest band name- King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Cherry Popping Daddies, Meshuggah (theyāre trying to sound heavy metal but it just means crazy in Yiddish. I sometimes think theyāre a klezmer band).
Weirdest artist name- The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, Steve Strange
Weirdest song title- Ćngus The Prize Winning Hog (Listen to this if you get a chance, itās hilarious), The Crunge
Day 14
I partially have an appreciation for Italian, but I also want to learn Italian because of a video game character. He just sounds so pretty speaking the language, and it makes me wanna learn it!
I donāt necessarily have a favorite international food, but I love Japanese food! Although, Iām an adventurous eater and Iām down to try whatever. Ironically and unfortunately, we donāt live in a diverse area, so itās hard trying to explore new foods. We have a couple of local Mexican spots, but thatās about it.
I wish I could listen to music falling asleep, but it ends up keeping me awake. Even if I make a playlist with calm music, it doesnāt work. I just came up with that question because when I sent that ask, I was listening to Simon & Garfunkel, and they have some really pretty music that makes me sleepy. Unfortunately, it only seems to make me sleepy when Iām actively awake. God only knows if I went to bed, it wouldnāt work anymore.
Two weeks into December! Anything on your mind? Has it been getting cold where you live? Tomorrow, itās supposed to be getting really, really cold where we live. Iām not looking forward to itā¦
Itās been getting really really cold here, below zero wind chill and all. Whatās the weather looming like where you live? Iām thinking about my very busy week and christmas plans, Iām going to Illinois to see some family friends. I canāt believe itās already almost the end of the year.
Iām so lucky to live in a diverse area so I get to try food from many culturesā¦
What video games do you play? I donāt really play anymore so Iād like to know where to pick things back up.
Sorry for the brief message, itās my momās birthday!
Day 13
Luna moths are gorgeous!! I also love shiny beetles too. We donāt have any beetles around here with super iridescent colors, but thereās a type of beetle around here that reminds me of black onyx gemstones! Cats and frogs are so dang cute too. Seals are also cute, but they never fail to amaze and kinda spook me with the noises they make. Iām starting to wonder why people wondered what does the fox say when we need to ask seals that lol
I gotta give kudos to the āTrampās Footprintsā pun-like title. The Steely Dan book I have is called āQuantum Criminals: Ramblers, Wild Gamblers, and Other Sole Survivors From The Songs of Steely Dan.ā I love the slogan, but the Quantum Criminals part confused me at first.
Sadly I only speak English, but I wanna learn Italian! Iād love to be able to sing in Italian.
Yeah, itās not that Iām superstitious towards this, but I do feel scared listening to the last albums by bands or artists when the core members or founders have passed. Iām gonna listen to Steely Danās last album eventually, just not yet.
Itās hard to pick a favorite treat when you have a sweet tooth! If I had to pick, Iād go for peppermint chocolate, but thereās so many good things besides that during the season!
What would you say is the best music for falling asleep to? I donāt listen to music while I sleep, but thereās been plenty of cases where songs almost made me fell asleep (I feel like this is a compliment towards songs, but an insult to any other form of media like movies or games).
If you want a great music autobiography, Iād have to recommend Elvis Costelloās āUnfaithful Music and Disappearing Inkā. Itās a bit rambly and jumps around between different time periods but the stories are fascinating and itās a great read for fans. The Steely Dan book sounds interesting as well!
Why Italian? Are you Italian or do you just have an appreciation for the language? If I could pick a language to learn it would probably be Chinese because Iāve known a lot of Chinese people throughout my life, including my childhood best friend who taught me Chinese swear words. Unfortunately she moved to North Carolina when we were in high school and we havenāt really talked since.
Chinese food is also my favorite international food, we have some really authentic places where I live. My favorite chinese dishes are mapo tofu, hand-pulled noodles, and soup dumplings. Whatās your favorite international food?
I canāt have noise when I fall asleep, so no music for me. Only fan/heater sounds work. Do you listen to music to fall asleep?
Day 12
God a milkshake actually sounds good right now⦠Funny how bringing up some kind of food or drink makes you unintentionally want it lol.
I got into bugs through video games, specifically Animal Crossing and Yokai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls! Both games have bug-catching mechanics that feature real bugs! It made me more curious and interested in finding the same bugs in real life.
Itās hard to pick a top favorite bug, but some of my favorites are the Goliath beetle, comet moth and rosy maple moth, dragontail butterfly, whip scorpion, bee fly, and pink footed tarantulas!
That biography sounds really damn cool! I know bands and musicians get biographies all the time, but I really like how the Supertramp one you got sounds really detailed, like itās an experience and not just informational.
For me, I would have to pick Steely Dan. I havenāt finished it yet but I got a book for my birthday thatās all about their songs and the stories behind them! Besides that I could really just talk about their albums and Iād be able to rank each one (except for their last two albums, which I kinda feel scared/sad to listen to? Kinda hard to explain).
I donāt necessarily have a good music question for today, so whatās your favorite holiday treat? Any sweets or warm drinks you like for the season?
Video games inspiring good!!! We love to see it!!!
If I had to pick a favorite bug, Iād probably pick the luna moth or any beetle with an iridescent exoskeleton. Those were my favorites to look at as kids even if they were a little stinky. Besides that my favorite animals are probably cats, frogs, and seals. Especially on twitter I love watching seal videos from Japanese aquariums.
If youād like to read the Supertramp biography, itās called āTrampās Footprintsā by Abel Fuentes, a longtime insider in the Supertramp fan community. If you speak Spanish, you can also get a Spanish version. Thatās the language the book was originally written in and I had to wait for the English version to come out before I could ask for it for christmas LOL
do you speak any other languages besides english? If you could speak any other language, what would it be?
I learned Spanish in high school and a little bit of Portuguese on Duolingo.
Steely Dan is one of my de-stressing bands alongside guns n roses and the moody blues. I understand why youād feel sad about those albums because theyāre getting old and all.
I have a sweet tooth so I love all kinds of holiday treats, but I love peanut butter cookies and hot chocolate. Those are probably my favorites!
Day 11
I didnāt know the Doobie Brothers and America were classified as yacht rock, so that has my interest! Jimmy Buffet makes so much sense though lol. I donāt think Iāve heard of Sweet but I do know the rest of those glam rock musicians.
Being a trivia host sounds super fun!! I love random trivia as well as participating in trivia so that just kinda feels like bragging rights.
Iām still in school and I donāt have a job yet, but I am getting a grocery store job soon (corporate jobs yaaaay /sarcastic). I would like to do something related to entomology though! Iāve been thinking about working at a natural science or insect museum. I just really like bugs and plants (I also just want any given opportunity to stare at bugs cause theyāre so cool).
I have a silly question; Besides David Byrne, what artist or band do you know the most information on? Like, if someone wanted to learn as much stuff as they can in one sitting, they would come to you for that artist.
The Doobie Brothers fall firmly into the dad/yacht category for me, but other people may think a bit differently especially before Mike McDonald joinedā¦
Anyway, being a trivia host is tons of fun!! I just got home from work. I work at an upscale bar/restaurant in one of the fancier districts downtown and I really enjoy it there. I also sometimes get a milkshake because every Thursday is burger and milkshake night.
Bugs are awesome!! How did you get into bugs? I was one of those kids that loved to turn over rocks and look at the bugs underneath so I encourage you to follow your dreams. I also loved the bug displays and butterfly gardens at some museums. What is your favorite bug?
If I had to pick an artist I could yap about endlessly it would probably be Supertramp. Theyāve been my all-time favorite for years and Iāve been trying to get back into them since Rick Davies, my favorite member of the band, was the first of the five to die earlier this year. For christmas one year I got a 700-page biography of the band that I read cover to cover. They are truly one of a kind in the rock world, straddling the line between progressive rock and pop almost perfectly without tipping too far into either.
What about you?
Day 10
I have a best of album by The Cars so theyāre probably next on my list!!
I donāt work out that often, but I like to go walking sometimes. I usually just listen to whatever when I walk, though āMetal Guruā by T. Rex is a pretty energetic yet calm song thatās good for talking!
With the secret rocker Santa, Iām mostly hoping to learn more about rock genres from this decade like yacht rock, glam rock, and some other things. Although, Iām really down to get into just about any genre really! (Plus Iām not good with distinguishing genres so itās all music to me lol)
Not a music question today, but whatās it like being a trivia host?? That sounds super fun! Do you host specific categories or just general trivia?
Iām pretty sure I have that album on CD, itās great to listen to in the car LOL
Metal Guru is a great walking song, I also like Ride a White Swan for walking for the same reasons you described, it puts some pep in my step but also calms my mind with a good beat as well.
Hereās some bands to check out for the genres you suggested, at least based on what Iāve listened to.
Yacht Rock- Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers, Jimmy Buffett, America
Glam Rock- Sweet, Slade, whatever queen and david bowie were doing in the early 1970s
Being a trivia host is a lot of fun! I have placements at two different bars in town and I also do corporate events sometimes. I both work for a local trivia company once a week (I get the questions the day of) and independently twice a month (I write the questions). Since I have class during the day (Last day of classes today!!! Yay!!) working at night is good for me. I also get to meet people and chat. Itās a fun job so work always goes by fast. Iām also a volunteer producer on Saturday nights for a local radio show and even though I donāt get paid I wouldnāt trade that for the world.
What do you do? Are you in school? Do you work?
