MILLER: This scene here was not in the script.
LORD: Not even in the schedule.
MILLER: In the schedule.
LORD: But between takes Ryan said, “You know, Sandra’s a beautiful singer, I keep hearing her every time I go to my dressing room,” and we’re psychos not to ask her to sing in the movie and so we did, which is not the best thing to spring on an actor, and she said, “I’ll do it if I get to pick the song.”
MILLER: And we said, “Unfortunately we’re only on this ship for another thirty six hours so, I’m sorry we didn’t give you time to practice this and rehearse.” And she said, “It’s all right.” And so she picked this with her daughter, this Harry Styles song.
LORD: With her daughter. And the reaction you’re seeing from these people is genuine because they don’t know this is the song she’s gonna sing.
MILLER: Yeah, we shot the reactions from the crowd first to give her sort of a chance to warm up, but it was gorgeous and everyone’s looks that were agog are real, like, “Oh my God.” And then listening to the lyrics of it and how apt they were for this moment for all these people, ended up becoming this central heart of the movie. And this is really her singing, no augmentation of any kind. She’s just great.
LORD: I find this so moving and it’s such a victory for Sanda’s character and her performance, an opportunity for her to express she is not cold, that she feels deeply for these people, and wants them to succeed, and her love has to be suspended for her to do her job. And I think that is the tragedy of some people in power. They have to suspend themselves, their personal interests.
MILLER: And so when, she’s sort of saying now to Ryan’s character—
LORD: “Maybe someday.”
MILLER: Yeah.
LORD: “Maybe someday we could be close.”
MILLER: Right. “But for right now, you get two minutes.”
LORD: Yeah. It’s almost he gave her a dare, said—
MILLER: “Can you have camaraderie?”
LORD: “Are you a full human being?” and she comes down and says, “I am.”
MILLER: And then says, “That is enough.”
LORD: “I just have to choose not to be.”
MILLER: And goes back to work.
