"No way am I going in there."

While Anthea was reluctant to force her friend to go into the old, abandoned, and supposedly haunted building, she really, really wanted him to. Or rather, she really wanted to go herself but was too scared to go alone. “It’s just a building,” she said hesitantly, “how scary could it be? Come, I’ll protect you from all the ghosties.” She held her hand out to him, hoping he’d take it and be led, but not expecting him to.

The more she thought about it, the worse of an idea it seemed. The building had been some sort of factory and apparently it wasn’t very up to date with safety measures. Anthea wasn’t sure she wanted to be followed around by angry factory-worker ghosts...but the curiosity was there. She would go if Yoongi would go.

"Your costume is amazing!"

“Thank you!” Anthea bobbed up and down on the balls of her feet--or rather, hooves. She was dressed as a faun today complete with furry legs, antlers, and fake ears. It was one of many costumes she planned on wearing up until Halloween day. 

“I worked very hard on it,” she said, grinning and practically bubbling over with excitement. There was little Anthea enjoyed more than getting to dress up prettily and eat candy. And drink spooky-themed cocktails. It was fun, especially when she got such kind compliments.

"Um, I'm scared. Will you hold my hand?"

Anthea looked up at her friend quizzically. Woobin--Kim Woobin--scared of a haunted house? She found it a little hard to believe. He was so big and tough-looking...and for him to be afraid when she--tiny, fragile little Anthea--was not? Well, maybe that wasn’t totally true. She was a bit frightened, but only a bit. Anthea liked scary things. 

With a gentle smile caressing her lips, Anthea slid her delicate fingers in between Woobin’s strong ones. “Of course,” she began, a hint of tease slipping into her words. “Don’t worry, I’ll protect you from all the evil monsters.” She didn’t fully believe his fright, but she would hold his hand regardless. If it wasn’t a comfort to him, it was to her at least.

"Why don't we make this party a little scarier by playing truth or dare in the dark?"

“Yes!” Anthea chirped in response to the other’s request. Despite being frightened easily, Anthea had a peculiar love for all things spooky. While truth or dare in the dark didn’t sound especially scary, Anthea was excited for it all the same. 

The two were at a Halloween party thrown by one of the students on campus. The Dionysus kids liked to celebrate holidays (even American holidays) for as long as possible, so a costume party almost a week early wasn’t strange at all. In fact, Anthea quite liked how many parties were thrown; it gave her ample opportunity to dress up in a variety of different costumes. Now, she was dressed as a harpy, which she thought was pretty scary. 

“Keumjo-ah, lets play! I’ll turn off the lights, you gather more people. This will be great.”

Yoongi wasn’t good at taking compliments. He knew this about himself just like he knew that those who complimented him got upset when he contradicted them. It was the polite thing to do to accept compliments. Even if he felt they were unwarranted. Feeling awkward and having no reason to keep his back to Anthea with the counters perfectly clean, Yoongi decided he would change the subject. 

“Who is your god parent?” Yoongi asked, turning to look at her. He hoped turning the conversation onto her would end the compliments. 

When he turned around, however, he saw that she already seemed through distracted from the conversation. His eyes followed hers to the timer. “Oh, are they almost done?” Yoongi asked. He had never baked before. He was eager to find out how well they did. It seemed Anthea was as well.

Her eyes were locked on the times as she reached to put away the final dish. She almost dropped it, her fingers slipping on the squeaky-clean plate, but she snapped out of her focus long enough to tighten her grip. The dish made it safely into the cabinet. 

Just like the plate, Anthea almost dropped the conversation she was having with Yoongi. She had been so focused elsewhere that he’d already asked her two questions (that she still had not answered). Truly, how rude of her. She hoped her new friend’s impression of her was not too harsh. 

Turning her smiling eyes to Yoongi, she replied, “Yes, just a few seconds left now. Fingers crossed.” She held up her fingers and crossed them, grinning with excitement and nervousness. “Earlier you asked me about my parent, right?” She began, trying to recover from her earlier impoliteness. “My mother is--” she was cut off by the oven timer beeping. The brownies were finished. 

Out slipped a squeal of excitement as Anthea practically skipped the few steps over to the oven. She reached inside and pulled out the piping hot pan. The brownies looked...perfect. They looked perfect. It was almost too good to be true! She stared at them in amazement, wondering how she managed it, even with Yoongi’s help.

As she carried the brownies to the countertop to set them down, she noticed something; the middle of the brownies sloshed. Sloshed. The middle was pure goo, it seemed.

—fun with laxatives

She doesn’t pay attention until Anthea decides to refuse and she pushes her lips out in a pout, because the older doesn’t want to join in the fun. “I promise it won’t be too bad! I overheard the nurse say it wears off after a little while. It depends on how much you eat of it to make you poop! Isn’t that good for your body to clean out all of the bad stuff?” 

Seeing the packet, she decides not to do anything to the other bag of food and just takes the tray to the middle of the parking lot close to where one of the cars are. It’s the battle professor’s car and it’s a bad terrible to do it, but it’s a small prank that won’t hurt, she thinks. Standing up, she kicks the tray of food over and runs to be next to Anthea under the umbrella, digging into the food that Anthea didn’t taint. Minju pops a fry into her mouth and extends it to the Beta student as birds descend upon the mess in the centre of the parking lot. 

Now it begins.

Anthea shook her head in bewilderment as Minju spoke. How could forcing an innocent flock of birds to...empty their bowels...be pleasant? For the birds, and for anyone nearby. Even if it does wear off, it can’t be a nice feeling. Anthea would stand her ground. 

More thoughts of uncertainty and guilt clouded Anthea’s mind as Minju set up her prank. She decided to voice her feelings once more as the little lioness ran to join her under the umbrella, but ultimately decided against doing so. She looked so pleased with herself, so excited. Anthea couldn’t spoil her fun even for the sake of the birds.

Besides, it was already too late. As the two girls stood huddled together under the umbrella munching on untainted fries, birds began to swoop down from the heavens to peck at Minju’s ungodly concoction of laxatives and fast food. The affect was almost immediate; bird droppings began pelting the professor’s poor car with some viscosity.  

The aftermath would be an incredible mess, Anthea knew, and the birds must feel so terrible in their stomachs, but...it was kind of funny. She grinned.

—fit to be tied

Astra was’t a very friendly person to be around. She didn’t try to hide the fact or cover it up, she wasn’t really a great person. But some how Anthea managed to get past that or just didn’t care, she’d always wait for her to get off work and walk back to the dorms with her. Slowly Astra started to accept it, though she was a bit more distance with Anthea. Still, the other didn’t mind and always greeted her with a smile.

“It wasn’t too hard, not very busy either.” Not a lot of people came and she had considered asking if she could get off early. Astra had her own cup of coffee in her hands, and her bag was hanging off her shoulder. She was that type to listen to the other talked, she was very vocal about things.

“Ah,” she began, “I’m glad to hear it! I know work can be tiring sometimes.” The two girls walked in unison towards the dorms as they always did. “I suppose working around coffee is a good way to battle weariness, though,” the girl mused, feeling relaxed.Despite it already being fall, the day was surprisingly warm and cozy. Such an atmosphere begged for silence to enjoy the weather, the falling leaves, the warm sun. 

But, of course, Anthea would have to ignore that urge. She liked Astra, but they weren’t super close (though Anthea hoped for it someday) and she didn’t want her silence to be misinterpreted as hostility or annoyance. So she spoke. 

Anthea relayed her day to the other girl, telling her of her classes and of the work she still had to do, of an incredible book she found in the library, and finally of how lovely her coffee tasted. “Brewed by the gods themselves,” she teased, nudging Astra with the arm that held her coffee, the liquid inside sloshing dangerously close to the cup’s rim, but not quite over it.

—destination istanbul (pt.1)

Imagine a student sitting in her desk, anxiously drumming her fingers against the desk as she watched the clock tick, tick, tick the seconds before summer holiday away. Imagine the excitement bubbling up in her stomach as she daydreams about all the adventures she will have during her time off. Imagine her trying to contain a giddy smile as she waited, but failing in the process.

This is how Anthea looked as she stood in line with Yoongi at the airport. Their bags were checked and their tickets printed; all that remained was security, which might prove to be an issue. Yoongi had with him a bag of seeds that could prove difficult to pass off as simple snack food, and Anthea herself had earrings that would turn into daggers if she took them from her ears. If it had been up to her, Anthea wouldn’t have taken the earrings at all, but Do Yeon had insisted that both of them be armed with something, even if that something was just a bag of seeds, or even pepper spray (which she had packed away in her bag).

Anthea was practically hopping as they inched closer and closer to the front of the line. The man who scanned their passports must have thought she was several years younger than she really was—just an excited girl ready to board a plane for the first time in her life. That was not the case, however; Anthea was just happy to be going back to Greece. That would not come until the end of the journey, true, but it would come nonetheless.

Now it was time to load everything into bins and pray that suspicions weren’t raised. “Here we go,” she whispered to Yoongi, not daring to look at him lest her concentration break. She slipped off her backpack, stepped out of her shoes, and covered her earrings with her hair. They would set the metal detector off, but she had been targeting the security guard the moment he was in sight. Anthea had been (trying to) slip little thoughts into his head:

the metal detector has been acting funny lately…it has been hypersensitive to metal as small as braces...if we stop to pat down everyone who sets it off, people will miss their flights…

How effective this process actually was, Anthea could not be certain. She crossed her fingers for luck and stepped through the metal detector. It buzzed. She turned frightfully towards the security guard who glowered at her and asked if she had any jewelry she hadn’t taken off. Had her telepathy been too weak, or had she misjudged this man?

“No…” she said meekly. He rolled his eyes and waved her through with a passing comment about how “this damned thing’s been on the fritz for a while now.”

Anthea beamed and turned to give Yoongi a big thumbs-up before going to collect her things. She’d keep an eye on him, however, just in case the demigod needed help.

                       BE WELL ON YOUR WAY, DEAR ONE…

The goddess of marriage, Hera, appears in a dream to those she has elected: her own daughter by name, Anthea Choi, and Min Yoongi, son of Demeter. The goddess dawned such beautiful white robes and a golden laurel crown on her head, radiating both regality and her motherly nature.

To Anthea, she says, “My child,” and to Yoongi, she says, “Min Yoongi, son of Demeter.”

From there, she took you by the hand to guide you through a beautiful garden full of flowers and the most exotic plants. As you walk through the garden with her, she speaks.

“The flowers here are beautiful when they are in full bloom. When they are simple buds, they need something to nurture them and grow, just like what every living being on Earth does. Food… water… shelter… and most importantly…” she looked to you, “Love.” She continued to lead the way and surprisingly, it’s not cold. Only a motherly warmth to keep you warm. “But with many cases of love, the people must take on all challenges that come their way and overcome them to be stronger. Even in marriage.”

You come to an orchard full of apple trees and Hera stands a few feet behind you at the entrance of the orchard.

“When winter comes, all of this will be lost. Go out and search for the golden malus domestica - an apple like no other - and bring it to my temple in Olympia before the day of the dead. There, a bride who is a follower of mine will await your arrival with the gift.” She doesn’t say how you’ll be able to find it, with the expectation that you’ll be able to figure it out. From there, the dream dissolves.

Today, you have swimming class with Professor Kazuya for first period because it’s Tuesday, the 6th. An announcement rings throughout the campus, requesting for Anthea and Yoongi to report to Professor Do Yeon’s office. There, she tells you that she was visited by Hera to let her know about this quest and be the guide from afar. From there, the details come forth: the golden malus domestica - alternatively known as the Golden Apple (the same apple that started the battle of Troy, though this one is not cursed) - was moved from its original location in Libya, to an apple farm in Istanbul. As the tree was given to Hera for her marriage to Zeus, it is heavily protected by a hundred-headed dragon named Ladon who never sleeps, and the Hesperides - 3 nymph goddesses, who have a bad habit of singing the dragon to sleep and stealing apples. These beings mostly speak Ancient Greek and are more stubborn if you try to speak to them in another language.

"Wait..."

Anthea rolled her neck to one side, then the other as she sat in class. The professor should release everyone any minute…any second. She should really be paying attention, but–and everyone was standing up. Class dismissed. Thank the gods.The sun was shining so brightly as Anthea walked outside that she almost didn’t see her friend standing not too far away. “Keumjo-ah!” She called out to the other girl while trotting over.“Did you wait for me?” She asked with a silly grin on her face. Instead of answering, Keumjo simply extended her hand to the other girl. This surprised Anthea; Keumjo would never consent to so much as a hand shake let alone holding hands.Taking Keumjo’s hand and letting herself be led, Anthea asked worriedly, “Is everything okay, my friend?”

Wait...

The lollipop wrapper crinkled and rustled as Anthea removed it from her candy. She was walking back to her dorm from class, excited to be done for the day, when she saw a familiar figure in the distance.

As he neared, Anthea grinned, a bulge in her cheek from the candy, and waved. “Hello!” She chirped when Mark was in hearing range. Much to her surprise, instead of replying, Mark grabbed the hand she was waving with and pulled her back in the direction she had come. 

She let out a surprised little yelp as she spun on her heel to keep from falling. Mark had a strong grip and a brisk walk that Anthea did not share. “Where are we going?” She asked, confused. “Is...is this part of battle training? Am I late for an exercise? Are we under attack?”
