i have a question for you, i you don't mind, you draw eyes very well and make them really realistic with the pupils. how would you make it look such a way if the person had slitted eyes??
I don’t think I have any slit-pupil characters besides Mi’J (whose pupils usually are too round), Tee-Markus and Alleir (who I haven’t drawn that much but I guess this is a good example of what I will try to illustrate).
My advice would be: if you have an iris around the pupil, handle it like a normal human eye. And if it’s just a big ol naked pupil in the middle of the eye, you can give it more expressiveness by translating it as if it was painted on the surface of the eyeball:
Whether you wanna make the iris and pupil look 3D or not, squishing and stretching them when looking in extreme directions is always a good idea for a cartoony, exaggerated expression. Keep in mind that TLK illustrated eyeballs are drawn as if the iris was a convex surface with the pupil sitting on the highest point of it - kind of the opposite of what I like doing, but very expressive, especially when the pupils bulge past outside the eye-lines. Some more screencaps with squishy eyes: x x x
I’d say don’t get extremely hung up on what’s “correct” or not in this case. This is art, entertainment and cartooning and unless you’re doing studies or realism, what looks good is often more useful to convey what you want than what is correct.
