The way I'm this close to asking "did cis white man Parse gaslight jack past his boundaries with manipulation mental health shieth steven universe" because I want that 2015 discourse
so much of the ākent is abusiveā argument rests on the fact that in one (1) argument, overheard by a biased protagonist, he talks & acts like someone in their early twenties who has been isolated, endangered, & commodified since being a young teenager. which he has. but people are mad he doesnāt talk & act like a 35-year-old faux-self-aware instagram therapist
i genuinely feel so angry & sad about kent and whiskeyās endings⦠i wish they had connected; i wish they had a semblance of a happy ending; i wish they were not doomed to unhappiness simply because they chose not to endanger their careers and personal well-being by coming out ā without a support system! ā in a virulently homophobic environment. they deserved community and acceptance, too.

also like. the fact that there were public & well-known ārumors about their rumorsā re: kent and jack hooking up while in juniors is proof enough to me that jack DID love kent and jack DID envision a future with kent ā one where they played side by side for their entire professional careers ā itās just that jack simply couldnāt handle the pressure of the professional career he was supposed to have. but the rumors are the clincher to me. bc jack is no fool. heās a hockey nepo baby; he grew up utterly entrenched in the hockey industry, where there are NO openly gay hockey players. jackās character is often played as lacking common sense for jokes but one thing he was canonically shown NOT to lack was an awareness of his public and industry image. he knew exactly what the papers and sports commentators were saying about him at all times. and after ODāing and leaving pro sports, he still never dated guys publicly, until bitty. jack knew exactly how virulently homophobic the hockey industry is and how closely scrutinized he was. so the fact he continued to be with kent anyway, despite these rumors and the threat to their careers they posed, tells me that jackās love for kent outweighed the dangers of these rumors. and that would have to be some love, indeed.
what kills me about everyone (freshly) calling kent abusive & manipulative is that there is absolutely a telling of this story where jack zimmerman, the rich, beloved nepo baby who hooks up with an isolated and lonely previously-unknown hockey wunderkind, starting homophobic ārumors about their rumorsā which will haunt and endanger said wunderkind throughout his entire career, then develops a drug problem, ODs, and permanently ghosts the now-completely-alone boy he was hooking up with, whose only semblance of community, family, and support was jack and jackās parents, only to later publicly come out by kissing another already-famous internet celebrity after winning the stanley cup, is the abusive, manipulative villain of this story. to paint kent as manipulative and abusive, you have to ignore how shitty knight, the one person who is a great judge of character in this story and who loves jack deeply and knows him well, calls parse a āgood guyā and talks about how jack gets āscaryā around him. if bitty and jack were not *the* main characters of this story, if you simply just shifted perspectives without changing a single canonical fact, every blog would be filled with people denigrating jack as abusive and manipulative.
sometimes i like to make myself sad by thinking about how kent thought he had a solid family structure with bob and alicia around and when jack cut him out, he lost all of it :)))
hate it when people are like āi ship kent and therapy ā¤ļøā I DONāT! i ship kent and peer support, kent bonding with other closeted/openly gay athletes, and kent escaping all forms of institutional surveillance (including psychiatric surveillance). i want kent getting righteously angry about how heās been commodified and dehumanized in the public eye and within the capitalist sports industry. let kent be emotional and angry!!!
and sometimes the people saying āi ship kent and therapyā are me, on this very blog, seven years ago. and thatās VALID!
do gay people these days even know about mika.

Did Jack Zimmermann ever truly love Kent Parson?
Yes
No
Okay, while Dex and Whiskey bond over their respective internalized homophobia and just finding peace with the queer identity, later down the line, Whiskey and Nursey bond a bit over their mutual lack of chill.
The thing is that while Whiskey is seemingly super unaffected by stuff, Nursey can see the way he bites the inside of his mouth, the way that his hand shake when he feels too much. Nursey acts chill because he thinks he is chill, that he needs to be, but Whiskey pushes it down becuase thatās what works.
So maybe some days theyāll be sitting alone and Nursey will just talk about stuff thatās a lot, stuff thatās heavy and unwieldy and that sometimes he canāt shake off as chill. And maybe Whiskey will sit there in silence, but other times heāll say his own words, his own experiences of being not chill and heāll say them because heās not okay sometimes.
With Nursey, Whiskey figure out heās not okay all the time, and that thatās okay too.
whiskey is literally an out gay man johnson just covered bittyās ears every time someone mentioned it bc he thought it would add a nice foil for the story
Just. HIS EYES.
(Via @tingo-tango)
whiskey will be like perfectly stone faced, no emotion in his voice, casual to an intimidating degree, "hey" and tango and ford are like "oh my god is he ok???? does he look stressed to you??" "oh shit yeah he's fucking losing it" and everyone else is like ?????? you guys are overreacting? but they are not. he is in fact losing it.
