Dex says, “What the fuck are you doing,” and Nursey pulls himself onto the roof of the porch.
It’s really not that hard is the thing: foot to railing, left hand to column, right hand to drain pipe, kick-up pushup flop onto the shingles. Easy. The shingles scratch a bit, but hey. Definitely better than waiting for someone else to get out of class. Definitely better than a hundred dollars for a locksmith.
The reading room window’s halfway open the way it always is. He could climb through and unlock the door for Dex, but he sorta likes leaving him hanging like this. Dex gets all pink and pretty when he’s flustered.
Dex is squinting up at him when Nursey peeks over the edge. He says, “You gonna open the door?”
“Nah,” Nursey says. He shades his eyes, looks up at the sky, and shrugs. “It’s nice out. I don’t wanna go in yet.”
“Or,” Dex says, “you could let me in, and then sit out again. Win-win.”
“How’s that a win for me?”
He can’t read this expression on Dex’s face. It’s a weird mix of the usual stubbornness and some you won’t, I know you won’t with a splash of maybe you will and it’s altogether confusing and intriguing at the same time.
Jaw tilted up, Dex says, “I’ll kiss you. Win-win.”
Ah. There’s that then.
Nursey raps his knuckles on the roof, aiming for nonchalance like beautiful boys say things like this all the time. “What — again, how is that a win for me?”
Now it’s Dex’s turn to shrug. “You talk in your sleep, I hear the dreams you’ve been having. But if you’re not interested I’ll just wait for—”
dex never went to samwell au where nursey is constantly trying to get his best friend, san jose sharks goalie chowder, to set him up with his celebrity crush, boston bruins dex, despite how many times chowder explains to him that just bc they’re both in the nhl doesn’t mean he knows dex or has ever talked to the man.
in a fit of desperation and/or annoyance, chowder just tweets at dex “my friend has the hugest crush on you, dm me.”

i like really can’t do genuine heartbreak but i CAN do angst that ends happy, so here’s my best shot :)
Nursey’s got a red Solo cup in one hand and a plastic champagne flute in the other and it’s sometime after three but before five and he is definitely not thinking about her or him or them together when he looks up between one sip and another to see the telltale blue hair reflecting the murky spotlights of the basement.
Nursey squints. He could be making things up--his brain is nice like that-- but he doesn’t think he’s imagining things. She’s got very distinctive hair, Dex’s--girlfriend. It’d been rather disappointing, actually, the blue hair. The whole thing had been easier to deal with when he’d been picturing some light-haired brunette going for an economics degree who smiled like a mom at soccer practice. Someone who Nursey could reasonably dislike on grounds of, like, predictability.
But no, Dex had to bring home a blue-haired physics major with a nose ring and good taste in music and the ability to out-argue Shitty while polishing off Bitty’s pie, i.e. perfect. Even Lardo couldn’t pretend like she wasn’t awesome for Nursey’s sake. Even Nursey can’t pretend like Amanda isn’t awesome for his own sake. She’s just so--so--
Nursey squints.
So-- making out with some random girl in a blouse at a frat party.
What the fuck.
Nursey is about two margaritas and three years too deep to be dealing with the emotional ramifications of catching the girlfriend of his best friend (who he’s also kind of sort of possibly maybe totally in love with) macking on some consultant for Goldman Sachs or some shit in the basement of arguably one of the worst frats at Samwell. This one doesn’t even have good music, Nursey’s only here to get drunk without the possibility of Dex calling Nursey Patrol and helping Nursey up the stairs and saying nothing about the poetry Nursey spills or the way his hands linger.
(Fuck does Nursey hate Nursey Patrol, fuck does he hate how much he loves it.)
Nursey downs the rest of the champagne flute--which was probably mostly orange juice at this point anyway-- and hands the red Solo cup to a freshman gearing himself up to talk to a cute boy a few feet away and then Nursey gets the fuck out of dodge. He manages to get a better look at the corporate recruiter Amanda is cheating on Dex with (and really, if you’re going to cheat on Dex, you’re really going to pick a chick in a blouse that probably has opinions on the stock market???) and if he hadn’t been sure before, the distinctive tattoo on Amanda’s shoulder proves that it’s really her.
(“Tattoos? Tattoos? I have tattoos.” “I know you do, Nurse.” “They’re really nice tattoos.” “I know they are, Nurse.”)
Emerging from the basement and then the frat house itself is instantly sobering. The chill from winter hasn’t quite left the air at night and Nursey wraps his arms around himself and doesn’t think about how Dex chirped him about not wearing a coat before he’d left. The frat isn’t far away from the Haus, thank god, but it is slightly farther when he turns left instead of right and then has to a backtrack a bit, but he still gets back in under ten minutes and he can still feel his hands, so overall, a win.
Attempting to get into the Haus quietly is a lost cause, given its one thousand year old floor and the fact that a ladybug could fart in the kitchen and wake up the guys in the attic. Still, Nursey gives it the good college try, which is why he’s creeping ridiculously through the living room when the light turns on suddenly and he screams, much to the amusement of Dex, standing in the kitchen doorway.
“Fuck, dude, what the fuck.”
Dex just smirks in that horribly attractive way of his. “How was the Psi-U basement?”
Nursey thinks of blue hair, washed out in the lights, Amanda’s hand on that girl’s cheek, the way Dex smiles when he’s around her. “Fine,” Nursey says, swaying.
The amusement falters and Nursey wishes he could figure out a way to keep the smile on Dex’s face the way Amanda does. Dex takes a step closer. “Are you alright?”
Nursey shakes his head violently and takes a step back, a step farther away. This is the part where he says yes, yes of course Dexy-darling, I’m right as rain, what about you? This is the part where Dex rolls his eyes and loops his arm around Nursey’s waist, his warm side pressed into Nursey’s. The part where they go upstairs, where Nursey writes his best poetry that he’s too embarrassed to write down when he’s sober, where Dex tells him to sleep well and lingers outside the doorway long enough for Nursey’s breathing to slow and then the floor creaks and Nursey knows he’s gone and wishes he’d held on just a little bit longer--
“Nursey, what’s wrong?”
Nursey shakes his head again. He means to say nothing, he means to say, I’m going to bed, he means to-- “Amanda, she--”
The concern turns to alarm. Why can’t Nursey ever make it better? “Is she alright? Did you see her? Is she okay?”
Nursey shakes his head again. He can’t seem to stop doing that. “She’s fine, she--she--” He swallows, and it’s sticky, cloying, citrusy and sweet on the back of his tongue. “She--there was this girl, she-- Amanda, she--”
Dex won’t stop frowning, concern knitting his eyebrows together with three short wrinkles, and Nursey has wanted to smooth them out with his fingertips every time he sees them since sophomore year, and he shouldn’t be doing this, shouldn’t be telling Dex this while he’s drunk, shouldn’t be telling Dex this at all, but he’s Nursey’s friend first and Nursey has to believe he’d tell Dex regardless of the love thing, he must--
“She was kissing some girl. In the Psi-U basement.”
The wrinkles smooth out. The amusement returns. Nursey--he can’t make sense of it over the ringing in his ears. Why is Dex smiling? Did--did Nursey do that?
“Did she look like a lawyer?” he asks, and at Nursey’s confusion clarifies, “The girl Amanda was kissing. Did she look like a lawyer?” Nursey nods dumbly. Dex’s smile only grows. Nursey is so, so confused and also more in love than he’s ever been. “Finally. I just won fifty bucks.”
What the fuck. “What the fuck.”
Dex laughs--laughs. “The girl’s name is Tammy. She graduated last year and moved to Boston. Amanda’s been in love with her forever, and I bet her that she’d get with Tammy before I--” Flush appears high on Dex’s cheeks, the soft pink one that means embarrassment and Nursey imagines would taste like cherry pie against his lips.
Nursey is--still quite a bit drunk. He needs--clarification. “You--you bet your girlfriend that she would get with her friend at a frat party?”
Dex’s nose scrunches up in Nursey’s favorite way--the same way it does when he’s trying to write humanities essays, the reason Nursey always says yes when Dex asks for help. “Girlfriend? Did you think Amanda was my girlfriend?”
Nursey remembers the start, hearing about Amanda every other day, then every day, then it was, sorry I can’t come, I’m meeting Amanda at-- and then one day at Annie’s, a girl with blue hair and a sharp grin yelled Babe! from across the room and planted a kiss on Dex’s cheek, her hand lingering on his shoulder, sipping from his coffee cup, getting him to smile like that--
“Well, yeah.” Nursey’s head is spinning and, for the first time tonight, not from the gin. “Is she--is she not?”
“Oh God, no, she’s so fucking gay, dude.” Laughter twinkles in Dex’s eyes. Nursey is drunker than he’s been since freshmen year of high school when Shitty snuck in some of his dad’s hard liquor and the janitors found them on the roof singing Disney songs at the moon. Dex’s girlfriend is gay. Dex’s girlfriend isn’t his girlfriend. Dex is--is smiling at him like he smiles at his girlfriend who isn’t his girlfriend.
“Oh,” Nursey says, dazed, “chill.”
“Oh wow,” Dex grins, leaning into the doorframe, “I can’t believe you thought--and you thought telling me my girlfriend was cheating on me at 3am while shit-drunk was a good idea?”
Nursey says, “Hey, honesty is important, and I’m not--” He stops. He remembers something. He squints. “Wait. If you bet 50 bucks on Amanda getting with Tammy, who did Amanda bet you would get with?”
The cherry pie blush is back. Nursey takes an absent-minded step forward. The room feels so much lighter now that Dex’s girlfriend isn’t cheating on him. The distance between them feels so much sillier now that Dex doesn’t have a girlfriend.
“Ah, well.” Dex rubs at the back of his neck, all country bumpkin sheepish to ask his sweetheart to the dance, and--and--
“I’m the sweetheart,” Nursey realizes with the kind of crystal clarity only afforded by the most copious amounts of alcohol.
Dex’s eyebrows furrow, those sweet little wrinkles appearing between them, and Nursey takes two long strides forward and presses his thumb into them. Dex goes cross-eyed trying to watch, but moves his eyes to meet Nursey’s after a moment.
Nursey grins, likely a bit sloppy from the gin, but he can’t find it in himself to care at the moment. “I’m the sweetheart,” he repeats, beaming.
Dex tries to repress the smile at his lips. “You’re not a sweetheart.”
“Yes I am,” Nursey sings, listing forwards. “You like me.”
“You’re an asshole.” Dex’s smile grows. Nursey watches its progress and sways.
“They’re not mutually exclusive,” he says, tracking the pink lips as they spread, revealing teeth and--and tongue and--
“I hate that you can still say mutually exclusive when you’re this drunk.”
“I’m not that drunk.”
“Yeah?”
“Mhmm. See, I’ll prove it.”
“How do you plan on--”
If Dex’s mouth weren’t so preoccupied, he might say that the taste on Nursey’s tongue is a good indication that he is in fact fairly tipsy, but as it is--well. He’s got other things to do.
(Amanda asserts that they tied since it happened on the same night and only pays $25. Tammy throws in five more and a condom and they call it even. Nursey kisses away Dex’s protest and pockets the condom, much to Amanda’s amusement. Turns out, she’s even cooler when she isn’t dating the love of Nursey’s life.)
Now... I legitimately love pretty much every character in Check, Please so much, but Bitty is my favorite character. He is my SON okay. He could actually be my child in real life, we look kind of similar. Same face shape and blonde hair 😭 BUT that's not the point of this post.
Dex comes up as a REAL close second favorite. He is also my child. And I just... love him? So much??
Like he goes through so much character development. My view of canon is also a little warped from reading so much NurseyDex fanfiction, but it's founded on canon Dex. Like he starts off so apprehensive of Samwell and of the team and of Bitty and everyone else and can't get along with Nursey.
He's just incredibly closed off and defensive.
But then.
He starts opening up. Communicating. He starts talking with Nursey over their differences and while they still bicker, their relationship becomes a lot better and they learn about each others struggles instead of being ignorant about it, because each has a specific advantage and disadvantage over the other in society. You get to watch their relationship improve over the three years we get to see them. (Technically four, but I think they only appear once Bitty's freshman year)
And he starts baking with Bitty. When we first see Dex, he literally says "That guy? Wow. I thought since Jack Zimmermann played here, guys would be... less good at baking, if you know what I mean." Which is, honestly, judgemental and could be interpreted as a coded homophobic comment. At least that's how I saw it. But I also see Dex as having internalized homophobia because I do not personally see that boy as straight. So he opens himself up to learning the ways of other people. Bitty says he adopts Chowder as his sweet goalie child, but... Bitty really wound up taking Dex under his wing. I think we can all agree Dex continued Bitty's cooking/baking in the Haus. Maybe as MUCH as Bitty, cause Bitty did a lot, but still, it's there.
And Dex grows super fond of Bitty too. He goes from possibly being a bit homophobic, whether internalized or not, at least apprehensive, to not hesitating to slam the hell out of another hockey player for giving Bitty a hard time just because he's gay.
I just love him so much and I think he grows so much as a person in his time in the comic and becomes way more comfortable with himself in the process.

25. Thunderstorms
The beams of the Haus rattled as another peal of thunder tore across the sky. There was water leaking in through Dex’s basement window. Dex had thought that he had patched everything there was to patch during the previous year, but it hadn’t rained this heavily at Samwell in possibly...ever. It had been nonstop all day, the gutters groaning from the constant onslaught.
Dex had already located and sorted all the tools he would need to make improvements the second it was dry. What would happen next year when he wouldn’t be around anymore to pick up the Haus when she was down?
Dex didn’t like to think about it.
He had always liked arriving back on campus at the end of the summer, earlier than the rest of the student body to start hockey practice. Summer break was never really a break, he worked all the way through. Samwell was when he really got to come home. The campus was a virtual ghost town, a place for just him and his friends before the stress of classes began. It was the most peaceful time of year for him.
Or, it usually was, when the roof wasn’t threatening to cave in due to inclement weather.
Just last one more year, Dex prayed to the Haus as he walked upstairs to fetch a bucket from the kitchen utility closet. One more year for me to live here before you fall apart.
Before Dex could turn into the kitchen, he saw that the front door had been left ajar. Dex rolled his eyes, stomping over to slam it shut and yell at whatever irresponsible jackass who was letting this typhoon blow inside.
He wasn’t even surprised when he saw Nursey sitting against the wall on the front porch, hoodie over his head and a steaming mug of tea in his hand.
“Sup,” Nursey said.
“You left the door open.”
“Nice to see you too, Poindexter.” Nursey lowered his hood. His hair poofier than usual from the humidity. He needed a haircut. “I was gonna text you, it won’t stay shut. The wind keeps blowing it open.”
“I was gone for two months.” Dex rubbed at his eyes. “Only two months and everything has fallen into ruin.”
“Hey, not everything. I did a load of laundry last night and I only had to run my clothes through the dryer once. I was like, whoa, hashtag blessed.”
Dex glanced out past the porch, at the rain that was falling sideways and turning their lawn into mud. The branches of the trees swayed menacingly, but none of them looked weak enough to fall. That was all Dex needed, a tree crashing through a window, or crushing the roof. However, the side of the front porch Nursey was sitting on was staying miraculously dry. Dex felt like Nursey always had that effect on the world around him. Everywhere Nursey decided to exist was a little brighter, a little more saturated and airbrushed, like a still out of a movie.
“What are you doing out here?”
“Chillin’. Tea.” Nursey raised his mug. “Watching the rain.”
Nursey patted the ground next to him in invitation. Dex slid down the wall, hugging his knees to his chest as he sat next to Nursey, their shoulders touching. Nursey offered Dex his mug and Dex gratefully took a sip.
“Chamomile,” Dex said, recognizing the flavor. “My mom used to make this for me on sick days.”
“Me too.”
Dex returned the mug and Nursey took a large gulp. He chased a drop that escaped with his tongue. Dex stared.
“I’m trying to give up caffeine.”
Dex snorted. “I’ll believe that when I see it.”
“I think it triggers my anxiety.”
“You think?”
“Hey,” Nursey laughed, shoving into Dex’s side, “you’re supposed to support my self care journey.”
“I don’t even think I know who you are when you’re not simultaneously hyped up on espresso, red bulls, and adderall.”
“It’s gonna be a whole transformation. I’m gonna start doing yoga too. And using essential oils. I’m putting incense sticks in every corner of the Haus. A diffuser in the locker room.”
“I actually can’t tell if you’re fucking with me.”
Nursey just smirked and shrugged.
They were quiet for a few minutes as the wind died down, the rain falling in more of a harsh whisper than a roar. It was even kind of calming when Dex just watched and listened instead of worrying about potential property damage. Nursey finished his tea and knocked his knees into Dex. Dex knocked him back.
“First practice of the season tomorrow,” Nursey said. “You ready, el capitán? You hype?”
“I’m nervous.”
“Why?”
“Just think about the last few captains we’ve had. They were like. Inspirational. Or popular. Or Jack fucking Zimmermann.”
“You can’t compare yourself--”
“How can I not!” Dex threw his arm out to the side, raising his voice. Nursey didn’t even react. After four years, he was used to Dex’s emotional outbursts. “Bitty went through so much shit, had so much pressure on him, was the center of national news, but still always had a smile on his face. Ransom and Holster threw the best kegsters, they were friends with every college student in the North East practically, and everyone loved them. Jack is a goddamn living legend.”
“Jack wasn’t always likable.”
“No, but we respected him. And he was an incredible player.”
“Poindexter,” Nursey sighed. “We all voted for you to be our captain. I voted for you to be our captain. We want you. And we wouldn’t have done that if we didn’t think you were inspirational, or a good player, or if we didn’t like you.”
“You didn’t used to like me,” Dex reminded him. “I never gave you a whole lot of reason to.”
“Chyeah, well I was also a pretentious asshole who liked making you mad on purpose.”
“Why were we like that?”
Nursey only shrugged, but Dex already knew the answer. He hadn’t exactly been planning to share the revelations he’d had over the summer, but maybe it wouldn’t be fair to Nursey if he didn’t try. Thunder rumbled in the distance, the storm starting to move further south. Dex picked at his fingernails and took a deep breath.
“Nurse, I’m sorry. For all our arguments. For acting like a douchebag. I think there were some things...I mean there was some stuff that I didn’t know about myself. And I took it out on you. And I’ve never really apologized for it. But it’s our last year so I wanna make sure--”
“Dex, why do you keep talking about graduation like we’re fucking dying?”
“I am not!”
“Yes you are, you’re like, so emo about it.”
“I guess I’m not ready to leave. It’s a year full of last times. Everything’s ending.”
“Soooo emo.”
“I was literally in the middle of apologizing to you.”
“It’s chill, Poindexter.”
“It is not chill. Nurse. I am trying to tell you--”
Nursey grabbed Dex by the front of his shirt and kissed him. Hard. Just smashing their faces together. Dex’s face burned. His chest, which had been so tight just moments before, felt burst open and raw.
Nursey pulled back, staring at Dex with an indiscernible expression. His hands were still tightly fisted in Dex’s shirt.
The sky was starting to lighten, the rain slowing to a drizzle. A puddle on the sidewalk in front of them reflected the clouds above it, the image rippling with every stray raindrop. Nursey tipped his head back against the wall and closed his eyes. Dex tugged at his shoelaces, just to keep his hands busy.
“Did I totally misread that?” Nursey eventually asked. Dex laughed.
“No. No you did not.”
“Alright. Cool. How was that for a first time?”
“What?”
“It doesn’t just have to be the year of last times, Poindexter.”
“Oh. Yeah. That was pretty good.” Dex glanced at Nursey out of the corner of his eye. “Could we...do it again?”
The corner of Nursey’s mouth tugged up in a slow smile. “Hell yeah.”
Dex placed his hand on the side of Nursey’s face, his fingers curling behind his ear as he drew him in for another kiss. Nursey rested his hand on Dex’s thigh, leaning into it, opening his mouth enthusiastically. He still tasted like tea and honey.
They sat there making out for so long Dex didn’t even notice when the rain stopped. Dex was smiling, he couldn’t stop smiling, which was making it very difficult to keep kissing. Nursey pressed their foreheads together, his nose brushing against Dex’s cheek.
“Does this mean you’ll move back upstairs with me?” Nursey asked.
“And give up the bungalow? Absolutely not.”
Nursey laughed, and it was such a good sound it gave Dex goosebumps all along his arms and the back of his neck.
The sun had returned, and Dex was waiting for the spell to break, but Nursey wasn’t letting go. He wasn’t trying to hide.
“It’s gonna be a good year,” Nursey said. “I’ve got a feeling.”

I’m gonna make my own post about this, though I am just gonna be reiterating a lot of what other people have said, but nonetheless:
Ngozi not confirming nurseydex is good, actually
Regardless of their attitude towards each other in year four and how far they’ve come, that’s still several years of relative animosity, bickering, and probably hurtful things said between the two of them. Sure, they were getting along better ever since Dex moved into the basement, but like. that shit takes time to work through. Especially for these two, who have very different life experiences and perspectives and will have to work hard to understand each other. That being said, that’s not an impossible thing to do. But it takes time. Probably their whole senior year. I could see the two of them getting together after graduating, but for things to work out well between them, they’ve gotta figure their shit out. And that’s not the story Ngozi was telling.
Ollie and Wicky getting confirmed?? Good Shit. They’ve been on the same page, best friends, since day one. They’re side characters, with not a whole lot of established characterization apart from the fact that they’re inseparable. That leaves nothing in the way of Ngozi saying “yup, they’re together”, because there is nothing objectionable about it.
Nursey and Dex? They have established issues that need to be worked through. If Ngozi had confirmed them, even set in a distant future at the very end, that would’ve been cheap, pandering to us, and that’s not how Ngozi works. She had a story to tell, and she told it! And she gave us the potential for something else within that story, as well. She’s hinted at shipping the two of them before, in some random extras, but their story requires time and effort on both their part AND the author, and that’s not what Ngozi was here to do.
Instead, she gave us a beautiful finish to a wonderful story about queer love and pride and confidence in oneself and overcoming your fears, and within that she also gave us a potential story about change, and understanding others, and learning to love someone, in the lead up that she gave us with Nursey and Dex. Not confirming them gives us the ability to finish their story ourselves, the way we want it, to flesh it out as much as we believe necessary for their character arcs. And I’m grateful for that!
There was no time in the end of Check Please to both give Bitty a satisfying conclusion to his story AND a confirmation of nurseydex that would feel real and honest, and I’m grateful that we got the ending we did. Ngozi finished the job she set out to do: this was Bitty’s story, not Nursey or Dex’s. We can finish their story ourselves.
