Encouraging homophobic thinking in a community of social media savvy teens will probably go down as the worst sin Modest/HJPR has committed in the management of this band. Perhaps it's naive, but I really hope that they learn from this and don't try the same strategy with future bands whose target demo is very young. Though hopefully, in the future, combating gay rumors also becomes less a priority.
Modest Management are so clearly out of their depth with One Direction; sure they manage/managed other X Factor talent, but none of these other performers have experienced even 1/10th of the fame of the boys. No one could have anticipated the boys would be the juggernaut of success that they have turned into, so MM! was taken unawares.
It seems like Modest’s entire management strategy is by-the-book; they’ve got their tricky little relationship with The Sun, they run generic twitter promo, release very standard, incredibly scripted print interviews and ham-fisted, totally transparent narratives
I would imagine that a number of the strategies they put into place early on (like say, Eleanor) were never designed to hold water for this long; they were supposed to be stop gaps only, but because of the escalating worldwide attention they had to keep it in place much longer than planned.
I’m hopeful that the higher ups from Modest have already learned what isn’t working (both from a public awareness, a band happiness and sheer morals perspective) and should therefore never be repeated. It’s just a shame that One Direction has to be the first pancake; the one ruined in the name of getting it right next time.
