Many people in the comments are saying “trauma”, but this is actually a very normal occurrence. It’s called Childhood Amnesia, and it’s a process which, as the brain reorganizes itself for cognitive thought that is developed in late childhood, it changes the Accessibility of those memories during recall. Many childhood memories are available to the person, but they will not be remembered during regular recall activity, you have to “trick” your brain into remembering with different tactics.

This is because there are two parts to memories - their encoding and their recall. The encoding determines their availability, their recall determines their accessibility. The reason why trauma memory and childhood amnesia are different is in this distinction. Trauma memory is often encoded differently, bypassing to the limbic system where it is stored as intrinsic memory. It can’t be recalled because it was never encoded. Childhood amnesia, however, seems to indicate that the memories are encoded, but we lose access to them as we age. This is most likely due to the development of brain structures that fundamentally change our encoding and recall of memory as we get older.

This is an important distinction, because trauma memory is “stored in the body”, i.e. you get triggers that send your body into a cascade of uncontrollable feelings, sensations and reactions. Whereas childhood memories won’t generally do that, they are just recalled at odd times with odd associations.

This used to be called “Auto Shop” and “Home Economics,” subjects which were included in nearly every high school curriculum up until the 1980s. Auto maintenance, budget management, sewing skills, cooking, and other basic Adulting skills were actually taught in classroom settings. But suddenly all that money got funneled away to sports and graduation requirements shifted toward standardized tests because those were somehow more? important? than life skills? and the home ec and shop classes were no longer taught, even as electives. We’ve been steadily losing arts classes for similar reasons.

And so students leave school with a thorough grounding in football and calculus, but having no idea how to sew on a button or change a tire.

Petition to bring back these classes in every single middle and high school in the country.

When Sherry Johnson was eleven, she found one day that she’s gonna marry a 20-year-old member of her church who had raped her. She became pregnant and in order to avoid investigation and criminal case, her family and church officials decided to make the girl a legal wife of this monster.

“My mom asked me if I wanted to get married, and I said, ‘I don’t know, what is marriage, how do I act like a wife?’” Johnson remembers today, many years later. “She said, ‘Well, I guess you’re just going to get married.’”

However, her case is one of thousand cases of child marriage. According to statistics, children 16 and under are still being married in Florida at a rate of one every few days.

Johnson and her family also attended a conservative Pentecostal church and that other girls of a similar age periodically also married. One girl said when she was 10 she was raped by both a minister and a parishioner and later gave birth to a daughter. There were all documents confirming her and her child’s age, but still, the judge approved the marriage to end the rape investigation, telling her, “What we want is for you to get married.”

And nevertheless, America prefers to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, like in Syria, calling it “defending freedom” rather than to change states’ laws and to protect American children from rape, coercion and molestation.

Today, Johnson is campaigning for a state law to stop underage marriage that has already become a norm in some states.

Please, help me to raise awareness to this issue. No one can remain indifferent to the problem of child molestation.

I don’t know what to title this post, so I’ll leave it untitled. I don’t usually make serious posts like this, but I hope people pay attention and don’t just skip this and keep scrolling. Today I watched a Ted-Talk about autism (Autism: A Quick Trip To My Home Planet | Monique Botha https://youtu.be/NCAErePScO0) that was eye-opening to me. I didn’t know half of this, and I have autism myself. After I watched this video, I did a little of my own research on the statistics. I’m just echoing a bit of what she said, please watch the video for more! I’m just going to get right to the point. I’m going to show you some statistics, and we’ll start out with the least impactful ones.

1 in 54 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder

ASD is 4 times more common in boys than girls

1/3 of autistic people are nonverbal

About 2/3 of autistic people have been bullied between the ages of 6 and 15

35% of autistic people do not seek higher education or join the work force after high school

¼ autistic adults do not finish college

43% are fired from their job because of having/disclosing autism

Only 10% receive support from their employers

80% are bullied at the work place

Close to 1/3 of autistic people are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder

About ¾ are also diagnosed with depression

64% of autistic people have suicidal thoughts

17% attempt suicide before the age of 17

We need to listen to her! This is horrific! Because of the way things are we’re saying that being anxious, being depressed, being suicidal is part of our genetics, that it’s woven into our DNA! This is not right! We need to level things out!

“It’s time for change, things we as a society, using the language that we use, using the words that we do. We build our society, it is something that is flexible and it is something that’s moldable, and we can either choose to keep it the same, or we can choose to change it now … if we don’t change it now we are going to have a really, really big problem on our hands.”

Please spread this, this needs to be heard! We need to take action!

I was just about to spiral into a bad panic attack, and my boyfriend goes "Stick an ice cube in your mouth." I'm not really sure where he got the idea, and I kinda laughed at it because I didn't see how it would help, but he was insistent. So I did it.

And now I'm on my second cube, because it worked.

He explained his reasoning to me when he got home.

1. I would initially think "what the fuck" and be distracted from the anxiety. (Correct.)

2. The cold of the ice would shock my system, bringing me back to the physical world and reality, drawing my focus to the cold in my mouth, and keep my brain away from thinking "I'm panicking, I must be dying." (Correct.)

3. He assumed I hadn't drank much water today and wanted to keep me hydrated. (Triple correct.)

It also forced your mouth to make saliva!

When you go into fight or flight mode, non-crucial body functions stop working so you have more energy to do what you need to do to survive (oooor to spiral into a panic attack). By forcing yourself to make saliva it helps calm you down because since fight or flight is an all or nothing response, they can’t happen at the same time.

Learned that from my old therapist, who would use it with veterans with ptsd

Anxiety is an emotional thing BUT there are feedback systems in place in your body that pay attention to physical states as well, which is why you then experience raised heart rate and so on when anxious. Eliminate or confuse one feedback system? Reduce anxiety.

Btw, this is part of Dialectic Behavioural Therapy, DBT for short, which was invented by a woman with borderline. It doesn't only work with panic attacks but also self harm, negative thought spirals, and sometimes even intrusive flashbacks.

Eating very spicey stuff works as well. I used to keep little packets of wasabi in my jacket, and that saved me more times I can count.

my new roommate said that her last roommate had an eating disorder and then talked to me about her clean eating and weight loss goals and how she buys clothes that are a little snug to motivate her to lose more

and like honestly? i have anorexia but this is why i constantly talk about the dangers of the “health and fitness” industry and diet culture bc we have essentially normalized certain symptoms of disordered eating but it’s ok if it’s under the guise of health i guess???

like how is calling it “clean” eating NOT a way to moralize food

how is intermittent fasting NOT the same thing as skipping meals

how come when i buy clothes that don’t fit, it’s something i have to tell my therapist about because it means i am putting pressure on myself to fit into them, but if a “normal” person does it then it’s just motivation for them?

And do you know what orthorexia is? An unhealthy obsession with “healthy” food or other foods that you’ve deemed “pure” or “proper”.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association, signs of orthorexia include:

Compulsive checking of ingredient lists and nutritional labels

An increase in concern about the health of ingredients

Cutting out an increasing number of food groups (all sugar, all carbs, all dairy, all meat, all animal products)

An inability to eat anything but a narrow group of foods that are deemed ‘healthy’ or ‘pure’

Unusual interest in the health of what others are eating

Spending hours per day thinking about what food might be served at upcoming events

Showing high levels of distress when ‘safe’ or ‘healthy’ foods aren’t available

Obsessive following of food and ‘healthy lifestyle’ blogs on Twitter and Instagram

Body image concerns may or may not be present

The rising obsession with “healthy” foods is inherently unhealthy. Please keep an eye on your loved ones who are acting like this; there’s a very good chance that they don’t even realize that they have a problem because they won’t consider the idea that their “good” and “safe” foods could ever hurt them.
