Sorry if this an answered/older question. I was reading a slightly untrustworthy book that had a footnote about Kelly and Dee transcribing the encohian language. I am 89% the way they describe it is the exact same origin story as the mormons, except it was dude with a crystal instead of a stone. Forgive me if this inaccurate, but the footnote was written in such a way that it almost felt intentional.
That's an ostensibly true but ultimately misleading comparison. I would argue that what D&K were doing is meaningfully different than what JS was doing.
While there is some evidence for Joseph Smith having an interest in ritual magic, I highly doubt that he was actually using ritual meditation techniques to write the book of Mormon. From what I remember, he more or less had the book written in his head, and used the trappings of scrying as a way to transcribe the text onto paper.
The ritual magic that Dee and Kelley were doing often involved long, complicated purification rites like forgoing food and/or sleep for several days, and then reciting the same prayer for hours on end. D&K were doing shit that has a pretty significant physiological effect on perception.
It's part of what makes Kelley specifically so interesting. He's clearly someone who went around Europe pretending to talk to angels for rich people (a time honored and just profession). But then he met Dee, who introduced him to some rituals that more than likely gave him visions, and it kinda scared the fuck out of him.
