“Would you STOP banging my chair please.” Dylan was turned around in his seat to face Jack in the desk behind him.
“Sorry. I’m fidgety.”
“No shit. You’ve been bumping me all class.”
“I’m sorry.”
Dylan turned back around. Still frustrated, he tried to concentrate on his work. Every once in awhile he’d feel a tap on the leg of his chair. Jack would accidentally shift again.
Dylan scooted his chair in closer to the desk to try to get away but Jack was still banging against it.
“What’s your problem, man?”
“Sorry.” Jack said quietly. He seemed unbothered by Dylans anger. He was focused on other things, not even looking up at Dylan.
“Hey!” Dylan shoved Jacks desk away from his own, pushing Jack’s stomach closer to it. It made a loud scraping noise across the room.
“What’s going on?” Mrs. Dubershy asked them in her stern teacher voice.
“Jack keeps kicking my seat.”
“I said I was sorry.”
“And then you keep doing it again!” Dylan throws his hands up.
“Alright, calm down.” The teacher says. “Just sit and continue your work.”
“No. He won’t stop.”
“Then you can go to the principles office.”
“Me?! He’s the one kicking me!”
“I didn’t kick you specifically.”
“Okay, okay. You’re both going. You’re bickering is disrupt full of this classroom.” Every classmate had been watching them after all.
The boys walked to the office together in frustrated silence. Jack occasionally tugged at his crotch. Not untypical for a boy, so Dylan didn’t notice anything strange.
“He was sent to the principals office. I’m just his guide.” Dylan said to the lady in the front desk of the office.
“Yes, like every other time.” It was clear Dylan has been sent to the office for his anger problems many times before, and she was well aware why he was here again. “You know the room. He’ll be in after his meeting.”
The boys sat on the chairs in the principals office. Dylan was more calm now. Jack became more fidgety. He kept shifting in his seat.
“Dude, chill. It’s just the principal.”
“I know.” Jack crossed his legs and squirmed some more. He wasn’t sure how much longer he could hold himself. All the bathroom lines had been too long during lunch and the school has a no bathroom break rule during class time. He’d had to go ever since.
Ten minutes past and Jack was still incredibly desperate. He couldn’t stay still.
“What the fuck is with you?” Dylan said. “We wouldn’t be in here if you weren’t so anxious.”
The principal finally came in to stop another spiel of bickering. “Alright boys. What’s the problem?”
“Jack kept kicking my seat and wouldn’t stop.”
“Did you apologize to him?” The principal looked at Jack.
“Why does everyone care about apologies. They mean nothing from this guy. He still wouldn’t stop after that.”
“Let him speak Dylan.”
“Yeah, I don’t mean to kick him. I’m just usually fidgety.” Jack was holding his crotch as he spoke. He felt like he was on the verge of pissing himself and just wanted to get out of there and be alone.
“You’re not usually like this.” Dylan says. “You’re always quiet and chill. That’s why I likED you sitting behind me.”
“It’s just an off day.” Jack struggled to come up with an excuse.
“I think this has an easy solution.” The principal says. “We’ll get Mrs. Dubershy to move the seating arrangement.”
“No!” Jack panicked. “They’re fine. I’ll stop.” He didn’t want to stop sitting behind Dylan. He liked that he could watch his back without him knowing.
Dylan said nothing.
“It’s up to you.” They were looking at each other as Jack started to lose his hold. The gripping helped none. He squirmed again but his jeans started to turn a darker shade. The seat cushion below him became damp.
The others hadn’t noticed anything until Jack couldn’t stop his flow and it splattered on the floor beneath him.
Dylan turned his head at the noise. His eyes widened a bit. He realized what was really going on. “We can keep our seating. I think the problem is solved.”
“Do you have a change of clothes?” The principal asked.
Jack was on the verge of tears. His face was bright red. “No.”
“He can borrow my gym shorts.” Dylan stepped in.”
“Can I just call home?” Jack asked.
“Yeah, you can wait for your mom in here.”
“Can I wait with him?” Dylan asked. “I won’t do more work anyway.”
The principal sighed. “Okay.” He left them to call home.
“I’m sorry.” Dylan said.
Jack was still embarrassed, but he had finally stopped moving around.
“Will you not tell anyone, please?”
“I won’t.”
