Smart Fabrics

Speedo’s new LZR Racer swimsuits promise to boost the times of the fastest swimmers in the planet at this year’s Olympics, but they won’t be the only high-tech suits to reach for the finish line. On Wednesday, the International Olympic Committee approved new high-tech swimsuits designed by Arena, Adidas and Mizuno, all considered to be on par with the high-tech Speedo design credited with 37 world records since its release earlier this year.

Denim can now be worn on ears, too. Stockholm-based headset brand Urbanears has launched headphones with a raw denim finish, indigo-colored ear cushions and a fabric-covered cord. The brand prelaunched the novelty headphones at Apple Stores and on apple.com in the U.S. earlier this month, and will roll them out worldwide on May 23. They retail at 80 euros, or $104 at current exchange.

Our field trip to Preview Textile Group (which is on the 11th floor of the same building MOOD is in) and our guide Jay Grank who showed us his craft of custom dyes and custom prints. If you see something downstairs in MOOD or any other fabric store that you like but would prefer in a different color, go to Preview and they will be able to custom create your fabric for you in whatever color/print you desire.

Greenpeace names water polluting brands

AMSTERDAM - Hazardous chemical residues in clothing items sold by major brands such as Abercrombie & Fitch and Calvin Klein are being released into public waterways when they are washed by consumers, Greenpeace has claimed in a new report.

In the United States, the treatment, storage and disposal of hazardous waste is regulated under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). "Mobile phone giant Orange has released a prototype t-shirt which powers mobiles while festival-goers watch bands in action!'

Users can plug their phone in to the t-shirt, which uses noise-responsive technology, for a quick top-up charge whenever they need it.

Comfortable, Water resistant, Smell-proof pants made by Outlier. The fabric made out of "high-tech double weave tweed fiber" used in the pants is provided by Swiss fabric alchemists Schoeller Technologies. It's 80% nylon, and includes a patented technology with self-cleaning fibers that keep the pants feeling fresh.

"TECHNOSENSUAL. where fashion meets technology" in Viena will be showcasing garments equipped with high tech material.

This includes a dress named Intimacy 2.0, designed by Studio Roosegaarde in collaboration with V2_Lab  and Anouk Wipprecht with sensors and conductive smart foils, which transforms from opaque to transparent to increase the intimacy between the wearer and people around her !
