Book Recommendations :: Dystopian and Apocalyptic

We might have mentioned before how much we love science fiction, and the fact that this year’s summer reading theme is Science. Actually: Science!! It needs an exclamation point. 

So, we’ve put together a really, really, incredibly huge booklist (working title? The Hive) for fans of science and fantasy fiction - and we added a little something extra, since, if you’re anything like us, when you love reading a genre, you love to watch films and shows, and play video games, in that same genre.

The cooking cure [day 2: breakfast habits]

The assignment asks for three goals regarding breakfast habits. These would be mine:

Eat fruit for every breakfast (I copied that one from Cambria who is liveblogging the cooking cure, it's definitely a good one and on my list for quite a while!)

Make home made granola (as an alternative to steel cut oats for week day breakfast at work)

At least once each weekend have a nice long breakfast as a family (if possible trying a new breakfast recipe)

Books, books, books.... I love them since my earliest memories start and couldn't imagine a life without them. I love reading 'old school' on paper but since my last birthday I'm also a very happy owner of a Kindle which I mostly use to read while bringing the kiddo to bed. On my way way to and back from work I prefer listening to audiobooks (instead of listening to the same people talking the same stuff on Bavarian radio programs every day).

For 2014 I challenged myself to read (or listen) to at least 50 books and keep (minimal) track of how much I liked them (to be able to recommend the best stuff to my friends). Whenever I find the time (or liked a book very much) I will also try to write up a quick review.

reading sword & laser

The Sword and Laser is a fantastic online book club / podcast for all books fantasy and sci-fi (http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/4170-the-sword-and-laser) which I've been following since I came across their youtube show on Geek&Sundry. In the past I already got some great recommendations from the group without really following their reading schedule, but in 2014 I really would like to read along (and blog my thoughts about the covered books).

For a quick overview, I'll rate the books on a scale from one to five.

January: The Einstein Intersection by Samuel R. Delany [4.5*]

workout regularly: check [45 min Wii Zumba]

eat like food matters: check [steel cut oats with fruits for breakfast, two slices pizza for lunch, sandwiches with turkey breast for dinner]

Zumba is sooo much fun :D. The Wii control is somewhat shaky but still... I checked on Amazon and apparently there is a big official DVD bundle, I'm wondering how long I can resist to get that (that's good, right?).
