"i don't have many people in my corner." there were a few other robots from his generation that were also fighting to survive, but eventually he'd lost them as they got caught. one by one, everyone like him was found, and soon enough it would be his turn. charly was honestly surprised he'd lasted this long. it was getting harder every day to live in a society that wanted him destroyed just for being different.
"it's really hard when you aren't even supposed to exist, and empathix is on your trail every day." he sighed sadly. "generation two. everyone knows we're defective." empathix now stated that their second generation of companion robots were dangerous as well as defective. no amount of reprogramming had been able to wipe out their 'undesirable quirks'. they were simply considered a lost cause by the company, and anyone who had been unlucky enough to own one of them. new, more compliant generations were given as replacements and charly's kind were mostly obsolete now.
"what about you? what's your story?" could they possibly be friends? he worried about being too personal too soon. iris didn't seem like the type of companion programmed to alert the authorities. much like him, she didn't appear to be programmed at all.
▪ ♪ ♩ ♫ ♬ carynn carver ( @onebigerror ) sent: "take this with you. it's a good luck charm."
Two fingers slip into the necklace chain, lifting it so that the tiny cross at the end dangles two and fro. He gazes at it curiously. Was it the religious strength that it represented the good luck part of the charm, or did something else about it make it lucky?
“Y'sure you're willing to part with it?” Teo didn't think this was the only cross in her arsenal; she struck him as the kind of girl who kept a bunch of these close, one that fit any mood or outfit. But, if this was lucky, maybe it was her favorite. And he'd hate to rob her of it. “This is a pretty one.”
Light glints off the metal as the chain twists around itself. Gently, he straightens the chain and starts fiddling with the clasp. Because if he was going to accept it, then he would certainly wear it. Just because he had some personal misgivings about the big man didn't mean he wouldn't accept all the grace and luck he could get.
“These are always so hard to get open,” he grumbles. “What, uh, what's making you pass this on to me, anyway? Scared I'm gonna get got by something?”
teo was right in assuming it wasn’t carynn's only cross, but it was the only one with any value. all her others were simply costume jewelry; this one was real gold, not just plated. for that reason it was special, and it was the one she decided to give him. no matter how upstanding and wealthy the carver's were, their wallets weren’t as open to their black sheep of a daughter as they were to their golden boy son. she made her own clothes and worked for every dollar she had, something jason would never even dream of doing.
of course she was willing to part with it; she wouldn't be offering if she didn't want to. "you fixed my bike after jason broke it. you didn’t have to,” she stated firmly. it had a bent rim, a flat tire, and a broken chain; she was sure that hadn’t been cheap or easy. and he’d done it for her without even asking for anything in return. that wasn’t something carynn was used to or took lightly. "i wanted to give you something in return." she wasn’t taking no for an answer. "god will be looking out for you if you wear it, or keep it close at least." maybe he wouldn’t want to wear the necklace, but she still wanted him to have it. she could him something else - something she had quite the reputation for - but that didn’t feel quite right in this situation.
it was pretty, and it would look great on him. "they can be tricky. the clasps are so small." she moved forward and reached for it. if he was really going to wear it, she'd help him put it on. "here, let me help.” she often made jewelry and had steady, nimble fingers. she thought about his question and nodded. "that too. in a place like this, you can’t be too careful." carynn had grown up believing that hawkins was a safe place where everyone knew and watched out for one another. with the disappearance of the byers boy, she wasn’t so sure she believed that anymore.
none of the teachers who usually ran detention had been available. to do it. last minute, bobbi had been asked – or more accurately told – that she would have the honor of overseeing it that afternoon. needless to say, it had been an awful day, and the drama teacher had been ill-equipped to handle the job. the young delinquents had run all over her and the auditorium for an hour. she had managed not to cry in front of them, but she certainly had a good cry after they left for the day.
after locking up, she went out the back door of the auditorium to where she’d parked her car. she wasn’t expecting anyone to be around, so she hadn’t bothered to fix her makeup, which was now running down her cheeks in ugly black streaks. she looked a hot mess, and she felt it too. the last thing she expected was to find one of the kids from the detention group out there smoking. she was in no mood to go back into teacher mode and just let out an exasperated sigh. seeing the cigarette reminded her of how she had been trying to quit for the last month.
"don't bother. i'm not telling anyone,” bobbi said in an utterly defeated tone when izzie scrambled to put it out. “If you give me one, i'll buy you a whole damn pack on friday." it was embarrassing to admit that, as a teacher, she lived paycheck to paycheck and was completely broke. her previous relationship, which she had barely survived the year before, had drained everything out of her. she was swimming in hospital bills and therapy bills, and all her savings – what little she’d had – were gone. "promise." did she really have to promise a student that she’d buy her another pack of cigarettes? no, but she did anyway. "let's go to my car and smoke so no one sees us." that was probably a terrible suggestion and would look even worse. a teacher in a car after school hours in a parked car. right now she didn't care.
"yeah, i don't like talking feelings either. i wanna go break something." holly always had more rage inside her than she knew what to do with. she had avoided gene and his property for the entirety of the thirty years she’d been dead. even seeing him in the yard was more than she could handle. every time she did, she would have a panic attack. this would be the first time she’d actively mess with the man that caused her so much pain. she was glad that izzie was on board with her but it wasn’t like she’d expected that she wouldn’t be. any chance to wreak havoc - especially on their yearly single day of freedom - she was usually right with her. yet another thing that holly loved about her. “let's vandalize his cars. he’s still got a few.” not as many as he’d had in his younger days but enough for their entertainment. “even one or two that he…” holly couldn’t bring herself to say the rest. that he’d taken advantage of her inside of. she knew she didn’t need to, Izzie would know and she’d understand. “that red mustang…the 1965 convertible. and the 1969 camaro.” she muttered the targets. there was no way he could see the damage done to those two cars and think it was a simple coincidence and holly didn’t want him to. for the first time in all these years she wanted him to feel her wrath and see the destruction it could cause. maybe it would be the final straw that would scare him to death. she followed along behind izzie being slightly more cautious than her. she didn’t feel like getting hit by a car. anything that avoided her the pain she could still very much feel as a ghost, she avoided. “i think hitting those two cars in particular will send a loud enough message. who knows, it might just kill him. and then i’ll never have to see his nasty abusive face again.” that was a lie. holly would always see him. the man and the things he’d done to her would haunt her forever. even in death. she couldn’t escape them. it wasn’t far to lead. she simply walked across the street and stood in her old yard. holly didn’t care if anyone spotted her. it wasn’t like she could go to jail. she would just reign destruction and then appear back in the hell house in the morning like none of it had ever happened.
there were so many reasons to be terrified, and all of them flashed through bobbi's mind as she chastised robin for following her. being a teacher involved in a relationship with a student was at the top of that list. even if robin was eighteen and would be graduating soon, that wouldn't hold much weight if it came down to keeping her job. and bobbi needed her job.
her tone softened, and she sighed with a nod in response to robin's questions. "yes. do that next time." she knew she couldn't go into the café with her younger partner. that pained bobbi because she was falling more in love with the girl every day. "that would give me time to get home and leave the back door unlocked for you." the nice thing about her quiet little house was that her neighbors kept to themselves. that was rare for hawkins.
"but since you're already here..." she wrapped her arms around robin and pulled her closer, standing on tiptoe for a kiss. the height difference was as comical as it was endearing. it was one of the few times bobbi loved being so short. "why waste any time talking about it?" nothing was as important to her as the brief time alone they shared.
it had been several days since raya had been left on her own by her last traveling companion, who had met his demise by the jaws of a zombie. losing him had been a quite a shame because that particular man had been very useful to her with his exceptional scavenging skills - that would be the only reason she would miss him or even give him more than a passing thought. soraya didn't get sentimental, she simpled used people until their usefulness ran out. traveling companions came and went, and normally she just preferred to be by herself. most of her company was usually nothing but perverted old men who wouldn’t be able to keep their hands to themselves even if their life depended on it - it just got really annoying.
the young woman hadn’t anticipated that her car was also going to meet it’s death so soon after the man she was traveling with but sadly that was just what happened. it wouldn’t have been a problem if she had been in an area where she could have easily gotten to another one - it just didn’t seem that luck was on her side which really pissed her off. she set out on foot sleeping wherever she could find shelter along the way - those shelters had been few and far between. most of them were nothing but random houses that had been cleaned out of anything of value long before she even set foot in them. by the time she finally reached anything resembling a town the woman was exhausted, starving, and dehydrated.
at first, she thought she was seeing things when she finally reached a fence with walkers impaled on it. everything in her told her to run away, but she was desperate. she had been having a lot of hallucinations these days, so it wouldn’t surprise her if this was one of them. it still didn’t stop her from crying and waving her arms at a man inside that appeared to be a guard in an attempt to get their attention - she had made it too far to just die this way, and she would be damned if she was letting that happen. maybe there was a god after all in this joke that had become the world, and this person would save her. she was dangerously close to passing out as she roamed the fences surrounding an old, abandoned building. she hit her hands weakly and uselessly against the metal to find a way to get herself inside.
