Flashlight (Michael Clifford)
Part Two (Part One)
Word Count: 4.348K
Blurb: On one of your evening mental-health walks, you notice a light moving through a house that has been uninhabited for some time, due to your neighbor's death. When you investigate, there's a suspicious looking man walking around the house, no overhead lights on, just a flashlight in his hand.
Warnings: explicit cannabis usage ; language ; talk of Death of parent/grandparent; grief; smut, inebriated but consensual sex, oral (f receiving), fingering, pleasuredom!Michael, praise kink, subspace, cum eating and chirophilia if you squint.
Note: I fucked myself up with this one. Taking a cold shower and a smoke break before part three.
************************************************************************
You don't smoke often, at least often in the sense of habitually. About once a month you let yourself indulge in a joint , maybe an edible if you were feeling really crazy. So when Michael looks to you in the dim light of the back porch and asks if you want to roll, you can't help but laugh.
"Everything I've smoked has been rolled for me," you say, leaning back into the metal chair. "You're definitely going to be better at it than me."
Michael cracks a grin and places a painted hand on his chest in mock hurt. You like the way the polish contrasts with his skin.
"And what about me says I'd be experienced in such deviant activities? Is it the twenty facial piercings?"
"Something like that," you deadpan, but the mirth drips from your voice nonetheless.
"Have you ever been taught?" he asks, bending over the part of the table you briefly cleared off, as he removes the stems from the bud.
"Yeah," you say, watching the way he works apart the flower with his fingers. His fingers are slender and delicate, even when crumbling weed between the soft tips of them. "It's the one thing I'm not great at."
Michael looks up toward you, his eyes noticeably green in the light.
"Well good thing I'm here to take care of you," he says.
You know the way he says it isn't meant to be sexual, isn't meant to mean anything, but it doesn't stop the way your stomach suddenly feels tight at his words. You try to chalk it up to the fact that it's been quite a while for you, but you know that's not it. You'd be lying if you told yourself you weren't attracted to him, someone who's basically a stranger.
Michael sprinkles the weed in a line on the center of the rolling paper. Not too thin for it to burn so quickly, just the right amount for you to be able to share. Michael's tongue dips to the paper, working along the edge as he goes to seal it. The way he licks swiftly along the seam forces you to avert your eyes.
You know if you have these thoughts before smoking, you're absolutely fucked.
When you look back, the joint is sealed, wrapped into a pretty little thing. Michael manifests a lighter from his pocket and slowly lets the flame consume the end, starting the red-hot cherry. When it catches, the smell of the strain fills the closed-in space. You can tell it's the good stuff from the scent alone, so many years of parties and dating stoners training you to notice quality.
"She's pretty," you say.
Michael's eyes goes to yours when you speak, but he says nothing, bringing his work to his lips and inhaling. When he exhales, the smoke curls from his mouth and gathers around him in grey tendrils. He passes the joint to you between his fingers and you reach to take it, letting the sensation of your brushing digits pass over you.
You inhale, holding the smoke in your mouth before releasing, the effects instantaneous. You feel the way the perpetual tension in your shoulders relax, how your mind eases into a more present state, the way your throat deliciously burns from the smoke moving into your lungs.
"Feel better?" Michael asks, and you redirect your gaze.
His eyes watch your face. It doesn't make you overthink, this time. You enjoy the way he looks into your irises like he'll find something there.
"Yeah," you say. "But I should be asking you that. You've had a crazy day."
You pass the joint back to him, the rotation beginning.
"You're right. Not everyday you get accused of being a criminal trying to get into your dead grandmother's house."
"Truly, my bad," you say, lightly, letting the early feeling of the marijuana induced levity wrap around you. "When two months had passed and no one came for the house, I gave up on the idea anyone would show."
Michael's lips wrap around the joint and you're drawn back to how pink they are. How pretty, in general he is.
"No one told me," Michael sighs, the cloud moving past the lips you are unable to stop thinking about. "Me and my mates, we have a band back in Australia and we were touring. Well, we had a band." He turns to you, his body loosening the way yours had. "When I came back home, my parents told me. Said they didn't want to ruin my opportunity to pursue music over something that could wait."
Michael says it so matter-of-fact, so like he's reciting a book he memorized and not speaking of something that hurt him, but you can hear it in the way he talks. He's tiptoeing around the true feelings, watching which words are safe to say without detonating the sadness, the betrayal. And even though you just met him, you know that's what he feels. Betrayed.
"I'm sorry," you say.
"Don't be." He passes the joint back to you, and you watch him as you take it. You notice the way his fingers linger against yours a micro-second longer than before. You blame the weed for his hesitation.
"You deserved to know when it happened," you say, remembering the words of your brother when you had called about your Mom. His exasperated sigh, the way he promised that he'd be making the drive within the hour, how he was grateful Dad wasn't around anymore to see Mom go.
"Yeah," Michael says, his eyes a bit glassy from the spliff. "Thank you. It's okay, though. I've been dealing with it."
You take another hit and immediately feel the high coming over you. The sensation starts moving through your limbs and to your fingers wrapped around the joint. You like the feeling.
"What are you planning to do with the house?" you ask, passing it back.
Michael sits there a second, contemplating. You like the way his face slightly scrunches up when he's thinking, how the ridge between his eyebrows deepens. It's endearing and suddenly it's a fight to not tell him that.
Maybe you should chill on the joint.
"Everyone wants me to get the house looking nice so I can sell it. I could really use the money back home. The way things are, I'm still living with my parents."
"What do you want to do?" you ask, sinking deeper into your seat, letting your body absorb the benefits of the weed. Your stance relaxes, and your knee accidentally rests against Michael's. He doesn't move, so you leave it.
Michael breathes deeply, the joint burning down with the stretch of his inhale. When he speaks again, the haze fans around him.
"I don't know yet. I like the idea of starting over where no one knows me." He cracks a sardonic smile toward you. "Well, I guess one person would kind of know me."
"Sorry I ruined the fantasy," you laugh, letting your head rest against the back of the chair and closing your eyes.
"Can't imagine any fantasy'd be ruined by you," Michael says.
The words rip through you. Even without the inebriation, his insinuation would strike straight to your core.
Your eyes open to his, watching him. His gaze doesn't move from yours, his green remaining on you. A challenge, almost. He's trying to see if you'll bite, and you know it.
"That's presumptuous," you say, trying to keep your voice even-keeled.
Michael still watches. You know he's searching for something, trying to figure you out.
"Is it?" he asks, his voice getting softer.
"Yeah," you say, reaching for the joint and pulling it out of his hands. You know you shouldn't take another hit, but you do. The burnt taste of the almost-consumed roll resting heavy on your tongue. You fight back a cough, clear your throat instead.
"What made you keep your parent's house?" he asks, shifting the conversation.
Necessity had always been your answer before when anyone asked. Your brother, your therapist, your ex-best friend who couldn't handle the way you turned in on yourself after you lost both of your parents within a year and a half. But now, with the weed in your system and the way Michael seems to be weighing everything you say with the feather of Anubis, you don't give the same answer.
"Loyalty," you say. "Maybe fear," you add. Then finally, "I don't fully know."
Your gaze goes to the joint smoldering out in your fingers. You realize you need to pass it back. You hand it to Michael, gesturing for him to finish it.
"I told myself if I didn't have the house then I was letting them down. They lived their whole lives dedicated to this place. How do you just let go of something someone poured so much life into?"
You don't notice Michael finish the joint; you just see the way he sets it down on the glass-top and lets it burn out.
"You won't go into their room," he says. It's not a question. Nor an accusation. It's just a statement. Just the truth. You don't need to ask how he knows; he just noticed. He's observant; that you've ascertained in the few hours of knowing him.
"Yeah," you say again. Not knowing how to say anything but the truth right now but also knowing if you open your mouth, only the truth will come out, the weed seeping into your brain and your rationale. What would hurt telling this man, really? The desire to say it sits heavy on your tongue, the marijuana coaxing you into truth.
"Being in there makes it clear that they're gone," you begin, the floodgate opening. "Obviously, I know they're gone. It's been nearly a year and a half since my mom died and three for my dad, but going into that empty room where they used to sleep and fight and have that goddamn TV playing way too loud feels like I'm stepping into a room full of memories and love that I'll never get back."
Your mouth goes dry, but you keep pushing forward.
"And that's what's stupid, right? I didn't even feel really loved by my parents. I knew they loved me in the way they could. But at the end of the day, it was always me. '(Y/N) will take care of it. She's our strong girl,' and they kept doing that until they fucking died. Then it really was just me taking care of it. Over and over and over. Telling my little brother, caring for their parents, everything. So it makes no goddamn sense that I can't go into that room. It makes no sense to compare that to an idealization of love, but I do."
Only now do you notice the tears running down your face. You swipe at them haphazardly, but let yourself finish.
"So I go to every other part of the house. My room stays the room I grew up in and my room will always be that as long as I'm here, and I tell myself I'm okay with that. Because I am okay, because I take care of things. Including myself. Including this fucking house because no one else will."
Your face is hot as the tears cling to your skin. You try to wipe them away, but they only seem to keep coming. Embarrassment floods into your chest. You can't make yourself look at Michael, but you feel the intensity of his eyes resting on you. Then, there's his hand on your knee. The warmth of his skin bleeds into yours, even through the grief swelling in your chest.
Your eyes move from his hand on your leg and follow up to his faded gaze. They're glassy, but present. He's here with you in the moment, and it knocks the air out of you more than the weed or grief could.
"You're allowed to still love them but also acknowledge they fucked up," he says. You feel stupid, because all you can focus on is the pink of his lips when he talks. How his hand on your knee sends your brain reeling even more. How it mixes with the sadness and the high into something exciting, something that you want more than to be talking about this right now.
"You're also allowed to want to not have to handle it all," he continues, his voice dropping low. "You're allowed to want to be taken care of for once in your life."
His mouth, his words, the way his eyes have spent all evening searching yours, it all wraps around your heart. The squeezing of the grief, confusion, the high, and desire taking up the space in the cavern of your chest. You don't know what to do with it besides reacting however is natural right now. You don't think you can stop it if you tried.
"No one's been able to ever handle it," you say, your teary eyes staying on his mouth as you whisper the truth. For a brief second, you're aware that he notices where your gaze rests.
Michael's hand doesn't leave your knee, but with the next words he says, it's like he's touching every part of you, caressing you from your knee to your thigh, up your arm, resting at the soft of your cheek, tracing the hollows of your temple.
"Let me," his voice is dry. Your eyes snap from his mouth back to his irises only then. "Even if it's just for tonight, let me."
"What?" you ask, the cracking of your voice not from the weed this time.
"You know what I'm asking," Michael says, voice desperate, not demeaning.
He moves from his seat, slowly. His eyes never leave yours as he goes to his knees, fixes himself between your thighs. The image of him in this position of petition, the silver of the piercings, how he doesn't touch you despite his expression already reading you, it makes a heat you've not felt from someone else in years pool in your stomach.
"Turn it all off," Michael says, soft and tender. "Let me handle it. I can handle you."
You don't want to have to make the right decisions anymore. You don't want to be thinking of everyone else over yourself. You want to let go, to have no true repercussions of letting go, for once. Despite the ghost of rationale in the back of your mind screaming that you can't do this, you let the way Michael's eyes feel like knowing and your desire thrumming in your chest to push you forward.
"Take it," you breathe. "Please."
Michael's hands cup your face and his warmth sends goosebumps flying over your skin. His eyes momentarily lock with yours, the longing in them irrefutable as he pulls your mouth to his. His kiss is tender like his words, but the metal of his vertical labret and the need bubbling under the surface sends want pulsing through you. Michael's mouth is soft, and despite the fact that you've never kissed someone with a lip piercing before, your lips move together with ease, finding each others, yet always searching for more.
He moves his right hand from your face and threads it into the hair at the nape of your neck, deepening the kiss. His tongue flits past your teeth the second you open up, a moan ripping from your throat at the sensation of his tongue piercing. You feel the way Michael smiles into the kiss at your reaction. Mind racing, you think of all the other places that piercing could find.
"All I need from you--" Michael speaks against your lips, then moves down the side of your neck, his hot kisses amplified by the marijuana. "--is to tell me if you don't feel good. I've got the rest. Okay?" His mouth goes to the most sensitive hollow at the base of your ear and sucks. You're not embarrassed by the whimper that leaves your mouth.
"I can do that," you pant, letting your fingers thread into the red strands of Michael's hair as he moves from your neck and to the exposed skin of your chest.
"Good," he says, and the praise sounds so sinful from his lips. "Turn that pretty brain off for me, baby. Just feel."
So you do, you turn it all off like you do when you need to disconnect from the pain and get through your day. Stick it into the back corner of your mind as something to go back to later. Not now. Not with this man kissing you like you're something to be protected, to be cherished.
Michael breaks the kiss and you hate the sudden desperation you feel at the loss of his mouth, but it's only momentary as he rises from his knees, pulling you upright with him.
"Inside," he whispers against your mouth before kissing you once more. "I want you to be comfortable."
You nod, letting him open the door and pull you into your room. You let yourself love the way his hands swallow yours.
As soon as the porch door shuts behind you, he's over you again, his mouth on yours, hands searching like his eyes over the curves of your body. His hands find your ass, and you groan as he uses your backside to guide your leg around him.
"I've got you," he says, lifting you up enough to lay you both back on your bed. You shudder under him when his mouth goes to your neck again, his lip ring grazing your skin as he drags his mouth across your chest. Every place his lips touch sets your skin ablaze. You don't know whether to blame the weed or the way your heart has thrummed in your chest since first meeting him.
Regardless, you need more, and your hips unintentionally rise against him when he shifts his weight, eliciting a hiss from your mouth when your clothed heat brushes against Michael's growing erection. You go to apologize but stop when Michael's eyes look to yours, his pupils wide.
"You sound fucking pretty," he groans. "Don't hold it back. I want to know you're being taken care of."
You nod, words never escaping you more than now.
"What did I say before?" Michael asks you, but you're in too much of a haze to recall properly.
"I don't remember," you say. It comes out soft and vulnerable, it almost makes your skin crawl, but the smile that comes to Michael's face is enough to eradicate any of that shame.
"If anything is too much, tell me. I need you to tell me, and I'll stop. But my only concern is to take care of you."
"I will," you say.
"Good," Michael whispers, and he presses a kiss to your temple as he pulls himself from you, bringing himself to standing at the edge of your bed. He watches you briefly, his eyes raking over you laying there before he eases your leggings off. You lift your hips to help, and love the feeling of his knuckles brushing against the back of your thighs as he removes your pants.
"Cute little panties," Michael says once you are exposed. You feel the wetness in gather in them at his praise. He slips his fingers through the waistband and drags them down your legs, tossing them past the edge of the bed.
He looks over you again, eyes resting on the swell of your pubic mound, his tongue darting out over his lips when his eyes travel south.
"Fuck," he says softly. There's no elaboration as he lowers himself back onto the bed, slotting his body in-between your legs until he's face level with your cunt. He presses a kiss to the inside of your thigh and you can't ignore the twitch of your clit at his touch, the heat growing in your core when he has yet to actually touch you.
Then his mouth is on you. Hot. Wet. The shock of the metal lip ring sending your fingers immediately to the sheets of your bed. Michael presses his tongue flat, swiping it up through your center. The barbell of his tongue piercing catches on your clit and the groan that leaves your mouth is nothing but animalistic.
At the sound, Michael moans into you, pressing his face even deeper, the obscenity of his tongue working into you sending you into a haze no drug could ever induce.
"You taste insane," he mutters as he pulls away momentarily for air.
You look down on him, his eyes blown wide and glassy from you, your slick over his pink lips and chin. He looks up at you with such adoration that your stomach twists. You don't have much time to dwell on his beauty, because he goes back down on you, pulling your thighs over his shoulders as he buries his face into you.
"Fu-fuck," you groan when you feel his tongue, piercing and all enter you. He strokes upward, the way the metal slides against your walls so unlike anything you've ever experienced before. Michael is unlike anything you've had before. Your hands find his hair, interlacing your fingers into his scalp and tugging, burying his face into you even deeper when there's nowhere else to go.
He licks upward, into the top of your walls and pulling out of you, licking over your clit. You tremble when his mouth fastens to you, sucking around your bundle of nerves, the metal and his mouth and the marijuana threatening to send you over the edge.
"Michael," you breathe, exhaling his name around you. Letting it settle in the air, an effervescent cloud of want.
The call of his name doesn't stop his ministrations, he sucks and laps at you even more. You feel the tight coil in your stomach, the way your orgasm threatens to spill like smoke out of Michael's mouth.
Michael devours you, consumes you, the noises too much but not enough. Then he slips a finger into you, and your body contorts.
"Fuck, Michael," you whine. And you don't care that it sounds pitiful. You are pliant in his hands, his finger curling into you, delicate but long and brushing against your gspot with every touch. You're trembling, your legs almost vibrating with desire, your breathing ragged, the spinning in your head so dizzying. Filling your mind with nothing but Michael, Michael, Michael.
"That's it, baby girl. Just feel it," Michael speaks, and you know he's between your legs, but his voice swells around you, all encompassing. The way he talks and touches, enrapturing you. You cannot think of anything but him, couldn't if you tried.
Then there's a second finger, and he curls up when he enters you. You feel the way your cunt swallows him easily, takes him with greed. More, more, more. You want so much more. You want everything he will give.
But your body can't take more without the price of your orgasm, and it comes crashing over you when he fucks into you with those fingers, his mouth never stopping as a scream rips from your throat, rips from the deepest part of you as you come without warning. You convulse as you reach orgasm, fisting your hands into his hair, body arching off the bed, your vision filled with nothing but bright white and the moans of Michael drinking you down. He doesn't stop, even when you know you're dripping, even when you know you've lost control, he swallows it all.
You lay there trembling, your brain flushed with the warmth of your body. You cannot process anything, just the feeling of the bed beneath you, the wet between your thighs. But then there's a hand on your face and green eyes fill your vision.
"Hey, you're okay."
The soft touch on your face, a palm pressed to your sternum.
"Breathe, breathe for me."
The green eyes expand into a face, Michael's face as you come back down. You're still trembling, your breath still scattered, but Michael's touch and face pressed against the pillow beside you grounds you. You breathe like he says, watching the way the air leaves his mouth as he guides you.
Michael. Michael. Michael.
You blink slowly, and a smile comes to his lips, his eyes shining.
"There she is."
And suddenly, you're aware of everything. The weight of his body against you, his arm wrapped around you and stroking your face, the way Michael is still fully clothed though looking so fucked out. You realize where he just took you, what he's bringing you out of. You haven't even touched him. You feel guilty.
"You're still dressed," you say, and your voice is weak, wrecked.
He knows what you're saying. Knows that you're the one who takes care of things, even your partners.
"Hey," he coos, thumb brushing along your jawline. "You've done enough."
The rational part of you wants to fight him, wants to tell him that you know this is likely limited for only one night. That if you don't do this now, you'll never get the opportunity to again. But instead, you nod, looking at the beautiful man in your bed.
"Don't stay in the guest room tonight," you say.
Something in Michael's eyes shift, and you catch the glance over your face, the way something lingers there out of reach. Then, an almost imperceptible whisper from Michael.
"Is that what you really want?"
You nod again, unable to voice the words that you want to say.
"Okay, pretty girl. I'll stay," Michael answers, pulling his hand from your face, wrapping his arm around you.
The exhaustion of the day, marijuana, and orgasm floats around you as you lay there in Michael's arms. It lulls you into its tendrils, the sleep settling around you. And for once, your mind doesn't race as you drift off.
No, the only thing resonating in your brain before you fall into that darkness is Michael.
Michael.
Michael.
I miss my future lover
I’m a firm believer in kissing places that are usually left untouched during sex. Kissing your hips and ribs. Your spine and wrist. I want to indulge in every part of you.

Flashlight (Michael Clifford)
Part One
Word Count: 2.891K
Blurb: On one of your evening mental-health walks, you notice a light moving through a house that has been uninhabited for some time, due to your neighbor's death. When you investigate, there's a suspicious looking man walking around the house, no overhead lights on, just a flashlight in his hand.
Warnings: Talk of death, parental and grandparent; grief; language; mental health themes; piercing!Michael Clifford; talk of financial struggle; brief mention of marijuana; Michael Clifford being fucking cute and stupid.
Note: I had this idea about 8 years ago, but never did anything with it. This fic deals with themes of grief and mental health because it dealt with subject matters that I was struggling with at the time, and ones that I am currently revisiting in my life. If you are not in a place to read it, save it for later or pass on this one. The entire fic is not, nor part one, sad nor depressing, as there will eventually be smut (I will set myself on fire writing it xoxo). Take care of yourself.
***********************************************************************
Your favorite band plays in your ears as you watch the only two kids in the neighborhood chase after each other on their bikes, heading back to their house. The sun is setting, and you have lived here long enough to know that their mother relinquishes the right to exercise their childish freedom as long as they are inside before dark. With the way the sky streaks pink and orange over the horizon, it's only a matter of time before the sun takes its rest from the sky.
You breathe in through your nose, inhaling the warm air tinged with the smell of rain. It doesn't make you nervous, though, the rain nor the impending darkness.
About seven months ago, your therapist suggested trying something new to keep what you called, rot days, at bay. There had been a particularly bad string of those, days where you couldn't leave bed, brush your teeth, really do much of anything except mindlessly scroll through your phone. Even then, that was sometimes too much. Staring at the ceiling replaced hours of screen-time for a while, the monotony and all-encompassing feeling of grief being too consuming to do anything else.
Your mom passed six months before the rot days started. It wasn't sudden, her life being one filled with health issues due to both her own lack of care for herself and other things completely outside of her control. The sadness was there, immediately, of course. She's your mom, after all, but as the eldest child with a sibling who lived several states away, everything fell onto you. Telling your brother he needed to come home, the funeral planning, how she was supposed to be taken care of, managing the family that was left's sorrow and drunken nights, all of it. For a while, you were just too busy holding everyone else up on your shoulders to notice that your ankles were also sinking in quicksand.
Then everything slowed down, and with that came your descent into depression. When no one had things to be fixed anymore, all that was left was the shattered glass in you that you purposely left untouched. At first, you denied it, telling yourself that the ability to not get up to make food was just exhaustion from work. Because you are you, you kept pushing through and ignoring, until you couldn't anymore. One day, the thought of not waking up was no longer disappointing, and that nonchalance toward death scared you. It scared you enough to do something. The same day, you forced yourself to research therapists who dealt with loss. That was your first step to getting better.
Thirteen months later, you're here, still doing your mental health walks even though you're at a place where getting out of bed to brush teeth no longer feels like scaling a cliff. So, when the rain starts to drizzle on your skin twenty minutes into your walk, it doesn't shake you. The evening is warm, and the droplets accumulating on your face mingle with the sweat in your hairline. You find yourself grateful for it.
You let your hair down, and appreciate the last few minutes of your walk. The sky is darkening, the sun disappearing as a final act behind the clouds along the horizon, and you take a deep breath. The front porch lights begin to illuminate down the street.
At twenty-nine, you still live on the road you grew up on as a child. The house had been left to you when your mom died, your brother and his wife already having their own home. You moved back in on your twenty-eighth birthday, nearly nine years to the day of when you had left. As a result of spending most of your life on this quiet street, you had learned the patterns and life stories of nearly all your neighbors.
Many of the original who lived here when you were a child had moved on or passed. However, the remainder of your neighborhood now consists of the retired looking for affordable living. Then, of course, the one family with children on your street.
You know that when the light blinks on the porch of the house halfway down the road, you will see Mr. Jones through the front window turning on Jeopardy, his feet kicked up and body reclined in a chair he should have gotten rid of years ago. When Mary Strader's porchlight shines, you know she's inside, making dinner for her and her husband of forty years: probably meatloaf. Every other week, she tries to bring you the leftovers, insisting that she makes too much each time, used to cooking for a big family, even though her youngest child is thirty-five.
You also are not surprised when Miss Linda's light above her front step does not come on. Miss Linda, a fire-cracker woman of eighty-eight, had passed two months ago. No one had come to take care of her house, her only family she had ever spoken about lived in another country; you could never remember if she said Austria or Australia. Her stories at some point began to all blend together; she didn't have any sort of accent to tell by, either. When no one showed, the city came out and shut off the power, leaving the house to sit in darkness and be consumed by the weeds growing around it.
So you are surprised when you see a flash of light momentarily shine through the front window.
You stop immediately, pulling your headphone out of your ear, as if pausing the pulsing of The Killers through your eardrums will improve your sight. The rain drips steadily over you as you watch, taking a few steps into her over-grown yard. Maybe you were just seeing things, or it was a lightning bug that just happened to show off their existence at the exact right time you looked.
Right before you're about to shrug off what you saw as a trick of your mind, you see someone move in the darkness of the house, a flashlight in their hand. You swiftly move away from the direct sight of the window. With the night growing outside, you realize that it could be difficult for the person moving inside to see you, but you saw them, didn't you?
You move along the side of the house, to the side door that you know has been locked for the last two months. When you get to the chipped-paint entrance, you see that the mortise lock is busted open. The idea of the person inside being a thief rushes at you, then you consider the fact that this person may just be a squatter looking for a place to stay.
Regardless, you know you shouldn't step into the house, but you also don't know who exactly to call. The police? Yeah, right.
Your loyalty to Miss Linda, though, pushes you to do something you shouldn't. You reach for the door handle and pull it open. It squeaks, but not loud enough to alert the intruder, you're certain.
Even in the dim light, you're met with bright red hair and a scream. You're not sure who shouts it first, but it's the same thing as you jump back from the red-haired man.
"Holy fucking shit!"
His flashlight drops from his painted fingernails and crashes to the concrete. Your heart pounds in your throat as you both eye each other. The man is tall, red hair obviously dyed, green eyes wide in shock, and a face full of silver piercings. If you didn't think he was a criminal, you'd find him very handsome.
"What are you doing here?" you ask.
"I could ask you the same," he says. You notice an accent there but can't place it.
"I'm making sure my neighbor's house isn't getting broken into," you say. "Your turn," you command, gesturing toward him with your phone light.
"I'm not breaking into anything," the man says.
Your eyebrows raise as your eyes go to the very cracked open lock on the door. The man sighs.
"Okay, not selling it, I know. My key wouldn't open the door so I had to bust it. Linda was my grandmother."
You feel a flush creep up your chest and into your face at the assumption you incorrectly made.
"What's your name?" you ask.
"Michael," he responds, the tension in his body loosening.
Only now do you realize that Miss Linda had definitely said Australia and not Austria. It is evident in Michael's accent.
"Sorry," you admit. "When I saw someone moving around inside, I assumed the worst. I didn't want someone to be doing that to Linda"
There's a pause before Michael responds, as the darkness fully settles, even the light from your flashlights are not enough to effectively illuminate you both.
"She left her house to me, but I can't get the lights to turn on. I tried the breaker and everything."
"The city turned off the access to the power-grid when no one showed," you say.
Michael groans and runs his hand through his hair in frustration.
"Of fucking course. This is where I'm supposed to be staying until I get everything figured out."
Again, you know what you're about to offer is somewhat dangerous, but this is Linda's grandson. The same Linda who had made dinners for you and insisted that one day, you would find a very good man to be with, despite your previous strings of failures. You also like to consider yourself a good judge of character, a quality that has ensured your singleness for longer than you prefer, and you feel confident that Michael won't harm you.
"You can stay with me," you say.
"What?" he asks incredulously.
"I mean, if you want. I live four houses down. You'd have your own room and tomorrow you could call the city to get them out here to turn the power on."
You feel him watching you, taking in the offer.
"You could be a murderer," he says, deadpan.
"Statistically, you're the one more likely to kill me."
A slight laugh passes his lips; you can't tell if it's because he's stupefied or amused, but you'll take either.
"What did you say your name was?"
"I didn't, but it's (Y/N)," you say.
You swear that under the faint beam of your flashlight, a momentary sign of recognition passes over his face, but it's too dark and the look too fleeting for you to be sure.
"Okay. I'll stay with you, but if you kill me in my sleep, you'll be haunted by a weird emo boy forever."
The laugh that escapes your lips is a real one, one you haven't heard in quite some time. You've been by yourself nearly every day these last few months.
"Deal," you say. "Do you have a car somewhere or a bag?"
Michael steps back through the doorway and bends down. When he returns to you he has a duffel bag thrown over his shoulder.
"No car, definitely a bag."
"Cool, then we can walk."
You turn down the concrete and move across Miss Linda's yard, back to the street. The drizzle of the rain is steady now, but it doesn't deter either of you. Michael follows behind, his steps more tentative despite the way he is taller. The apprehension of his decision radiates off of him in subtle undulations of anxiety.
"How old are you, Michael?" you ask, intending to alleviate the stress by making conversation without prying too deep.
"I haven't been asked that in a while," he says. "I'm thirty."
You nod; you had assumed he was around your age.
"We're close, then," you say. "I'm twenty-nine."
"Ah, so you were also taught about stranger danger," Michael jokes, monotone.
"Yeah, didn't learn much, apparently," you say, turning at the driveway to your parent's house. "This is it."
You move beneath the shelter of the carport and fish out your keys, grateful that you left the outside light on before going on your walk.
"It's cute," Michael says, gesturing to the front door of the house.
Under the light, you can catch more of his features. He's paler than you'd expect an Australian to be, his lips a rosy pink with a vertical labret piercing through his bottom lip. He's got a septum, high nostril piercings, and a bridge all along his nose. An eyebrow ring accentuates his right brow, emphasizing the contrast between the metal and his green eyes. Now that you know he isn't a criminal, you have no issue acknowledging that he's attractive.
"Thanks," you say, shoving open the door. "Picked it out myself." You make the joke that he won't understand and move into your home. Switching on the light, you gesture Michael inside.
When he stands by your doorway, you truly notice his height, the top of his head only a few inches from peak of the doorframe. His boots sticking out from beneath his baggy black jeans probably add a few more inches, but not much. You can tell from the broadness of his shoulders.
Michael takes in the kitchen and dining room. His eyes settle back on you as if seeing you for the first time. Realistically, this is the first time he's fully seen you in direct lighting. You simultaneously enjoy and dislike the way he observes your features, so you shift your body toward the rest of the house.
"I'll show you the room you can stay in," you say. "So you can put your bag down and get comfortable."
You walk through the living room and into the hallway. You don't acknowledge the room to your left, just open the door in-between the two rooms on opposite ends of the hall.
"There's the bathroom. There's two sinks so you won't have to worry about any of your toiletries being messed with or anything."
A quizzical look passes over Michael's face, his eyebrows raising as he looks into the bathroom.
"Who else lives here?"
"No one," you say, clearing your throat. You tell yourself that what you're about to have to disclose is not a big deal.
"Then why are there two sinks?"
"My brother and I shared this bathroom growing up," you answer.
Instantly, you learn that Michael is intelligent. He doesn't allow the realization to morph onto his face, but you see the shift in his eyes as he pieces it together. His tongue comes out to lick his lips nervously, and you catch the silver glint of the piercing ball resting on his tongue.
"I'm sorry," Michael says.
"Don't be. It's just something we have in common." You say it as if it's just fact, not something that keeps you from even contemplating moving to the other room at the end of the hall, the one that used to be theirs. "Here's the room," you say, moving toward the room that once belonged to your brother and opening it. This room you have no problem sleeping in on those nights where rest eludes you, so it's clean, the bed made and ready for guests that don't come. Well, until Michael.
Michael steps into the room while you stay in the hall. It's a strange phenomena seeing someone so large take up the space that your little brother lived in for eighteen years, but you're glad it can actually be used.
"Are you sure you want me here?" Michael asks, keeping his duffel bag on his left shoulder as if setting it down gives him a permanence he is afraid of having.
"Yeah, it'll be nice to have someone under the same roof again," you say, catching the earnestness and regretting it. Michael's dealing with the loss of his grandmother; he shouldn't have to be reminded of your grief in every conversation. "As long as you are certain we won't murder each other, I'm good with it," you say, alleviating the heaviness of the subject.
A smile cracks on Michael's lips, hitching up his left cheek to accentuate the dermal there.
"Well, thank you. I would have figured it out, hopefully, but you saved my ass from having to sleep in a hot and dark house."
"No worries. I'm glad to help Linda's grandson," you say.
Michael's eyes settle on you again, and he searches your face, searching for something he may recognize within himself.
"Not to push my welcome," he starts. "But do you happen to smoke?"
You laugh, a dry one, but a true one nonetheless.
"It depends on what type of smoking you mean."
Michael's eyebrows tick up in knowing.
"That gives me my answer," he says, finally setting his down his duffle bag on the bed. In a quick motion, he unzips it and pulls out a metal tin and lighter. A smile breaks on his face, and you realize you love his teeth.
"Let me smoke you up?"
"Smoke me out, you mean?" you clarify.
"Out, up, whatever fucking Americans say. I think we both have earned it," Michael says.
Michael is so convincing with his pink lips, smile, and openness that you agree. As you lead him to the porch, you tell yourself that there are much worse ways to cope than smoking with a hot Australian man, after all.
Maybe you'll like it even more than your mental health walks.

***********************************************************************
You're not used to riding in Calum's car. Well, sober, at least. You remember faint scraps of the ride home that first night he picked you up from the bar: the residual scent of cigarettes and his cologne, the way you were trying to convince your body not to ruin the leather upholstery of the car, how you had to force yourself not to watch him buckling you in for the sake of honor. Now, however, with your mind completely present and only a single drink in your system, you're aware of everything. One of those things being the way Calum's hands wrap around his steering wheel.
You were acutely aware of how good he looked before, but when he flew into that parking lot and opened the car door for you by reaching across the passenger seat, he looked hotter than you had ever seen him. You didn't know if the last three weeks had been really good to him, or if you just weren't ashamed to acknowledge the way the sight of him made your heart thrum anymore.
"Looking for a ride?" he had asked, his thick eyebrows raising, a smirk on his mouth. You hadn't seen him care-free with you ever this way, so you had smiled and climbed in his car.
Now, you were riding in his passenger as he drives down the highway. He hadn't asked where to take you, knowing the way to your place at this point. You tear your eyes away from his hands when you feel him casting a side-long glance to you.
"I didn't expect you to call me again," he says. The way he says it is light, but you know there's vulnerability there.
"I'm sorry," you say. You know how it looks calling him out of nowhere when you needed an out. "I was dealing with a lot."
Another sidelong glance of those eyes and you're suddenly conscience of the way you carry yourself, of what you say, of everything.
"Yeah, I figured," he says. You realize how you gave a stupid answer. Calum was dealing with a break-up, he could have used a friend. He could have used you.
"I wanted to," you say. "I didn't know how to navigate a friendship with you when Chelsea was still my friend, and--"
"Was still your friend?" Calum interrupts you, catching your allusion. His eyebrow raises and you note the way his nose subtly scrunches when he does. You find it endearing. "Is she not your friend anymore?"
"That's actually why I called you. I just ended it with her at the bar and we had all ridden together."
"Why'd you end it?" he asks as we pull into my apartment complex.
"She wouldn't be honest about what she had done to you."
You try to say it casually, but you know the way that standing up for someone you had only been around a handful of times against your best friend feels like devotion. You feel the way your face warms. Calum doesn't say anything for a moment, just parks his car into the spot outside your apartment and turns to face you, his back leaning against the driver door.
His face searches yours, and you find that his softens. The uncertainty of why you had called no longer etches into his features, that furrow between his brow gone. His eyes are light when they scan your face. You let yourself notice the way the bow of his lips slightly upturn, his strong nose, his jawline and how it doesn't get less angular as it turns into his neck, his tattoos peppered over his collar bones.
This is why you stayed away when he was with Chelsea, because Calum Hood is fucking beautiful, and even sober, it's impossible to fight.
"You didn't have to do that," he says, his voice softening with his gaze.
"I know," you say. "But I wanted to. I didn't want to be around someone who could do that to--"
You stop yourself there, your next words a giveaway to how you really feel about him. He didn't need that. Didn't need to deal with someone with some insane crush so soon after being harmed how he was.
"No," he says. "Don't stop yourself. Tell me."
His voice is laced with subtle control as his tongue flicks to his lips. You can't stop your eyes from going to his mouth and you see the way recognition passes over his face, that he notices your gaze. The energy shift in the vehicle is palpable, and a nervous flit resounds in your stomach. You swallow past the dry mouth and comply.
"--who could do that to someone as great as you. You deserve so much better," you say. It's not a full confession, but it's enough.
There's silence in the car and you're nervous that you've completely exposed yourself, given away all your cards and made yourself look like an idiot over someone who was only extending friendship.
"I'm sorry," you find yourself saying again, reaching for your bag in the floor and moving to open the door.
"Wait," Calum says and his grip is suddenly around your wrist to stop your escape. You don't let yourself immediately look at him, just watching the way his fingers look wrapped around your wrist and feeling the way your skin tingles with heat when he touches you. You allow your eyes to travel from his hand, up to his arms, and back to his face.
There's a new look residing in his features. The desperation in his eyes has warmth flooding into all of your limbs and pooling in your lower stomach. You study him, waiting for him to say more.
His lips form around his words carefully, as if what he says could detonate you both.
"Can I come in?" he asks.
You don't want to set yourself up for disappointment, so you tell yourself he's just wanting to talk, but the most true part of you wants him to be asking for more. So you nod.
"Okay," you say.
"Okay," Calum responds.
You both climb out of his car as you pull your key from your bag. You're hyper aware of his presence behind you: his smell, his warmth, the way his breath fans over you from his proximity as you try to manage the door. You notice the way your hands subtly tremble, and you hope Calum doesn't as you twist the deadbolt.
You make your way inside and hold open the door for Calum. He passes in, his eyes not leaving you as shut the door behind. When you turn his gaze is still on you. You tug down on the hem of your dress for no true reason except that standing in front of him, you're aware of the way it doesn't reach mid thigh.
"I need to know why you made sure we barely saw each other when I was with Chelsea," Calum says, not moving from his spot a few feet away from you.
You know you're past the point of no return, so you don't lie.
"I couldn't deal with being around you when you were with her," you say, voice dry.
Calum forces a laugh, a sly smile pulling the right corner of his mouth up. "Am I that horrible to be around?" he asks, the joke falling flat because you both know that's not what you mean. He's testing you.
"I felt like a horrible person. I've--"
You stop for a moment, questioning if this is too honest, too much like skydiving with no parachute.
"--I've never wanted somebody who was not available before."
Calum's expression doesn't shift, but his eyes alter, realization sinking in. He takes a few steps toward you, forcing you to back up, flush against the door. He doesn't touch you, but the way the heat radiates off of his skin, he might as well be consuming you whole. You do your best to keep your eyes on his and not his mouth, but it's difficult when you have to look up at him to keep his gaze.
"Tell me if you want me now," he says, voice steady. His hand goes to rest beside your head, his face so close to yours all he would need to do is dip his head to meet your lips. "I need to know, (Y/N), because I want you." Calum brushes his free hand along your cheek. The gentleness of his touch sends shivers up your spine. "I don't want to have to ignore it anymore," he whispers.
You bring your mouth to his in answer and Calum meets you in a crashing kiss. His lips are soft and warm; you taste the cigarettes he smokes on his mouth. It makes the thrum in your chest beat louder. Calum snakes his arm around your waist, pulling you closer to him as he licks into you, kissing you like he's only ever craved you, like he finally gets to indulge. The wet of his tongue desperately moving against yours has your core throbbing. You stayed away because of this, because of how much you knew you'd be pliable and easy in his hands.
Calum moves his ministrations from your mouth to your jaw and down your neck, his hands roaming to the back of your legs. He hooks one of your legs up around his waist as he gently sucks into the soft skin below your ear. A moan escapes your mouth at the feeling of your barely clothed core ghosting over him straining through his jeans.
"Fuck, you sound so pretty," Calum swears. His mouth stops at your neck and goes to the shell of your ear. "Can I hear how pretty you sound taking my fingers, princess? Please?"
His offer goes straight to your cunt and you feel the wetness gather in your panties. You nod your head yes, but Calum moves from your ear and locks his dark, brown eyes with yours. His pupils are wide with desire and pink tinges his cheeks. You've never made a man flush with desire, before, and it amplifies his next words.
"I need you to use your words, pretty," he says. "I need to know you'll tell me if you ever want me to stop."
You try to steady your voice as you speak, fighting over the arousal and disbelief.
"Calum, I want you to hear how I sound taking your fingers."
A salacious grin spreads over his face as his lips captures yours again. However, you're taken aback when he drops to his knees in front of you.
"Fuck," you say, not able to get anything else out because Calum hooks your right leg over his shoulder. He looks like sin staring up at you from his knees, your clothed core just inches away from his face. Calum's right hand comes up between you, teasing you with his thumb over your clit, causing your hips to snap against the pressure. You know he feels how soaked your panties already are, because his mouth drops open in adoration.
"You're so ready for me, sweetheart," he coos. He presses a quick kiss to the inside of your thigh and you tremble, your body not able to process the desire coursing through you. Calum pulls aside your panties and his fingers tease your entrance, gathering your slick. You grind your hips, needing more, needing him. Calum gives it to you, sliding his middle and ring finger into you at once.
It's more than you expect, and his touch rips a whine from your throat. Your walls flutter around him as he works his digits deeper. Calum looks up at you like the world spins because of the way your cunt takes him. He looks so beautiful on his knees, his fingers fucking into you, chocolate eyes blown wide.
"Fuck," Calum groans. "God, you're so damn beautiful like this."
He curls his fingers up against your walls and you cry out at the electric feeling building at his touch, his tips grazing the one spot inside of you that'll cause you to come undone. You clench around his fingers, knowing your orgasm is fast approaching.
"Fuck yourself on my fingers, angel," Calum groans. "Come all over me."
You're already so close, pathetically so, but you let your hips drag down the length of his fingers, writhing at his touch. You grit your eyes closed and press the back of your head into the wall, letting the obscene sounds of Calum fucking into you fill your brain and the room.
Calum doesn't warn you before slipping a third finger into your cunt, and the stretch of him working you open is what sends you over the edge. Legs trembling, you cry out, a bright white orgasm ripping from your body. Your brain goes fuzzy and you struggle to hold yourself upright as you soak Calum's fingers.
"Goddamn-- you're a fucking vision--" Calum groans, swearing from the floor. You want to look down, want to see the way he's admiring you, but your brain is fuzzy and so fucked out. But you want more, you want to taste what he's done to you.
"Calum," you whisper, panting as you try to ground yourself. You make yourself look down, taking in the scene before you.
Calum looks up with reverence. The flush on his face traveling from his neck and into the collar of his shirt. Your leg is still hooked over him, securing you into place. He looks so wanting, so ready to give you anything you ask for that you don't hesitate when you reach for his wrist and bring his fingers into your mouth.
You love the taste of yourself on Calum's skin, and watch him as you clean yourself from every finger. His mouth is agape, hot, heavy air escaping.
"You're gonna' fuckin' ruin me," Calum groans, removing his fingers from your mouth and slipping them back into his. His eyes flutter as he cleans whatever is left of your pleasure. "Fuck, I need more of you," he pants. You unhook your leg from his shoulder and pull him up to you by the collar of his shirt, crashing your mouths together. His mouth claims yours in a hot kiss.
"Bedroom," you say fervently and you feel him smile into the kiss. You only break apart for him to take you by the hand and guide you into your room. Once you cross the threshold, he's pulling you into him again, hands greedy and roaming as he backs you up against the bed.
"As stunning as you look," he grunts as you suck on the delicate skin of his neck, "I need that dress off."
You comply, not arguing with the man you've wanted the last eight months. Whatever he told you to do, you would, and that makes a thrill run through you. Deftly, you strip the dress over your head, leaving you in only your panties and bra. Calum's eyes devour you, roaming over every inch of your body. You don't shrink beneath the gaze; there is no place for any insecurity with the utter desire emanating from him.
"Your turn," you say, unable to fetter your craving to witness all of him, and he tugs the shirt off over his head, one hand never leaving your body as he does. You hiss when Calum's hot skin comes in contact with yours, his hands memorizing every curve and fold of your body. Devotion, prayer, a pilgrim paying their respect to the statue of a saint; that's what Calum's touch is, and you bask in it.
You let yourself be hungry, let yourself be desirous. You've stopped yourself from what you've needed for so long, you allow yourself to trace your hands over his torso, his hips, up the muscular ridges of his arms. You learn all of Calum, you want to learn even more.
"Lay back, angel," he commands, a hot and open-mouthed kiss pressed against yours. You let yourself fall backward onto the bed, propping yourself up on your arms. Calum stands over you and admires the sight of you: flushed, panting, and panties soaked. He looks godly in the dim lighting of your room, the shine of the lamp making his tan skin appear gold. His brown eyes alive with want. His lips pink and swollen from you. The way the tattoos only seem to accentuate the best parts of him, not conceal them.
"Calum," you whisper. Though it's just his name, it's your petition. Your request, and he knows it by the way he crawls over you, pressing his mouth against your stomach, then your chest, and back to your mouth. Your skin feels electric, alive with the touch and sensation of Calum. You don't know if you've ever fully experienced desire until now.
"What do you want, pretty girl?" Calum asks. He peppers kisses over your neck, your forehead, your face, your mouth, the valley between your breasts. "Whatever you want, I'll do it," he says. And you know from the way he bites into your skin and inhales your scent, he means it.
"You," you say, allowing yourself to touch his face, tracing his jawline and the furrow of his brows. "I want all of you."
His face lights up, desire and adoration spilling from his eyes and mouth. He presses another desperate kiss to your mouth. You hook a leg around his and grind your hips up into him. You're safe here. Safe to want him, safe to be wanted.
"Fuck," you groan in tandem, feeling the length of him pressing through his jeans and brushing your hot core. You reach down and palm him through his pants, Calum bucking into you at your touch.
"Devastating," Calum swears. "You're gonna' fuckin' devastate me," he promises, fumbling with the button of his jeans. When they're free, you slip your hands beneath the denim. You're needy and you have to feel him. Slipping your hands into his boxers, you watch his face go slack when your wrap your hands around him.
The feeling of his rigid, curved cock in your hand, makes your cunt flutter. Calum hisses, squeezes his eyes shut as you work him, taking your thumb to his tip to gather the precum you know is there.
"Goddamn, (Y/N)," he chants, head falling into your shoulder. You continue to rub him off, pressing kisses to the side of his head.
"You sound, gorgeous," you admonish him, trying to memorize the sound of Calum whining into your ear, wishing you could record it and never lose the way his hot breath and whimpers resound in the room because of the way you work him.
Calum goes unbearably rigid in your palm and he swiftly wraps his hand around your wrist, pulling his face from your shoulder.
"Baby, stop. I won't be able to fuck you if you keep it up."
The way he calls you baby sends a sharp squeeze around your heart. The way his eyes are blown wide with pleasure makes your clit ache. All of you needs him.
"Then fuck me," you say, your voice soft, but still a plea. You need the god you've made out of Calum to bless you.
"You've got any protection?" he asks.
You reach into your bedside drawer, your box of condoms you bought ten months ago just in case of any partners, still unopened. You pull out the box and rip it open.
"Pants off," you say to Calum.
Calum smirks and places a kiss to the corner of your mouth. He crawls off of you to tug off his jeans and boxers, fully exposing himself. His cock is deliciously curved, his tip pink and leaking with his desire. Your mouth goes dry at the sight of him. But you don't let yourself freeze, you hook a finger in the band of your panties and drag them down your legs. Calum licks his swollen lips, looking over you. Carefully, you unhook your bra, casting it to the side. His gaze settles on your breasts: the swell of them and how they rest against your stomach. You see his cock twitch as he takes you in.
"I've always know you were gorgeous," Calum says, kneeling against the bed, his finger tips ghosting over your leg and to the mound of your pubic bone and over the folds of your stomach. His finger tip finally reaches your breast, his hand shifting to cup you. You groan at the sensation of his mouth wrapping around your nipple. He gently sucks, flicking his tongue against you. "But you're like the goddamn sun," he breathes out, crawling over you, slotting himself in between your legs.
He grabs one of the condoms and opens the package with his teeth, sliding it over his length. You feel yourself tremble with anticipation. It's been so long. You've wanted Calum so long. Calum leans down into you, pressing his mouth to the skin at your shoulder, your chest.
"Are you ready?" he asks.
"Yes," you say. You've always been ready. "I need you."
"You've got me," he whispers, sinking slowly into you.
An animalistic groan rips from your throat when Calum bottoms out, stretching you so deliciously your fingers kneed into the sheets. The way his cock turns upward already grazes your gspot.
"Fucking hell, Calum," you pant, letting yourself get accustomed to him.
"You feel so good, pretty girl," he whispers, pressing a kiss to you, unable to ever kiss you too much. "You're doing so good. We can stay here however long we want."
"I'm not going to last," you admit, feeling the way you flutter around him just from pressing into you.
"That's okay, baby," he reassures, brown eyes staying with yours. "Let me take care of you."
"Okay," you say.
"Okay," he smiles, and with your nod, begins to thrust into you. It's slow, his cock dragging against every nerve in your walls perfectly. The heat in your stomach thrums with the sound of Calum's skin meeting yours, the way you are so slick around him. You can't help but gasp every time your bodies meet.
"You're so gorgeous, angel," Calum admonishes. "You're taking me so well," he grunts as he picks up speed. The snap of his hips brings his cock directly to your gspot, and you're consumed with the sensation of Calum: with the kisses he presses to your hot skin, the sweat dripping off his chest, with the way he fucks into you like it's worship.
He hits you perfectly again and your eyes fight to stay open, threatening to roll back into your head. Your hands grip onto his shoulders as he claims his place in your temple.
"Calum," you whine when your walls begin to clench.
"I feel you, baby," Calum praises. "I want that pretty pussy to make a mess on me. Let go."
He brings his hand between you, his thumb going to your clit as he fucks into you, your greatest devotee. The pressure and circles of his thumb on your most sensitive spot sends you into your second orgasm, white-hot, mind-numbing, Nirvana. Your legs tremble as you clench around Calum, and you both cry out in unadulterated pleasure.
"Fuckin' gorgeous, (Y/N)," Calum swears as he continues to fuck you through your orgasm, his head dropping to your shoulder as he thrusts twice more before he goes rigid inside. "I'm gonna' come with you, baby," he moans into your ear, sending shivers over your sensitive body. Your name falls off his lips as he finishes, his muscles going taught. Lightning hot warmth moves through your core when he fills the condom inside you. You kiss his neck, unable to do much more from the sex-induced haze, from the ambrosia of his touch.
Calum collapses on top of you, and you let the weight of him rest on you, ground you, comfort you. You both settle into the quiet, listening to the sound of the other's breathing. Your hand rubs Calum's back lazily, natural, tracing over the muscle and sweat.
Calum sighs and pulls out of you, rolling gingerly off of you. He lands next to you in the bed, his eyes watching yours, hand going to your interlaced fingers resting on your chest.
"I was right, you've fuckin' ruined me," he says, a smile playing on his lips.
You roll your eyes, but let the laugh slip from your lips.
"How so?"
He gazes into your eyes, searching for the right words. Now that the want is gone, all you see is adoration. It makes your heart clench in your chest.
"You said I deserved better," he begins, taking your knuckles and bringing them to his lips, pressing a soft kiss against them. "How can I ever have anything but you, now, when you're what's better?"
A flush comes to your face and chest. You know he is waiting for your response, looking to see if his worship has made him favorable in the eyes of his new deity.
"Don't have anything else, then," you say. "Just have me."
Calum nods, his smile lighting up his gorgeous face. He brings his hand to your face and pulls you into another kiss. It tastes like safety, like devotion.
"Okay," he breathes into you.
"Okay," you say.
You both lay there, sharing touches, lingering kisses, and stories of the yous from eight months and eight years before, creating your own books of each other to study and learn and commit to memory. The stillness of the room drapes over you both, consuming you the same way you enrapture each other. And in the darkness, you find a new religion. You find each other.

**************************************************
You're fucking stupid. That's the first thing that comes to mind when you wake up with a migraine so horrible that getting a pick axe to the back of your skull would be a reprieve. You knew you aren't twenty-one anymore. In fact, you're closer to thirty than twenty-five, but in an act of pure idiocy, you decided that drinking would fix your problems. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
You press the heel of your hands into your eyes, praying for the pressure to give you some relief. In a strange way, it does, so you lay there in your dark room and let the events of last night crash over you. Out of all people, fucking Calum got you home. That, as well as being abandoned by both of your best friends, is not something you would have expected.
Speaking of, you know you need to text Chelsea and see what the fuck happened between her and Calum. Opening your phone, however, only seems like a way for you to worsen the pounding coming from the center of your head.
You suddenly recall that Calum left a water and pain meds on the bedside table. Removing one of your hands from your face, you fumble in the dark for the feel of the bottle. When your fingers wrap around the medicine, you immediately twist open the lid and swallow three, washing it down with the stale water. You won't complain about the water too much with the way your mouth feels like you spent the whole night chewing sand and gravel.
Greasy food, you need greasy food, you decide. Taking a deep breath, you try sitting up. The blood rushing through your body temporarily worsens the migraine, but once you settle into being upright, the pressure seems to lessen. You stagger out of your room and into the hall leading into your combo living room and kitchen area. Sunlight seeps through the cracks in your blinds and into the kitchen. Thankfully, it's not strong enough to worsen your current state.
You find your phone turned face-down on the kitchen table. You don't remember leaving it there, but to be fair, most events from last night aren't entirely clear. You know Claire left with some dude, Calum answered Chelsea's phone when you called, and that you spent the evening with Calum making sure you didn't die from alcohol poisoning. You get a flash of memory of him looking over you while you drank your water in bed, and because you don't like the way even thinking about that makes you feel, you pick up your phone and call Chelsea, hoping that somehow Calum got her phone back to her.
The phone rings four times before she answers.
"Hello?" she asks, sounding annoyed. If you weren't so miserable right now, it might have pissed you off.
"You've got your phone back," you say, your voice as wretched as you feel.
"Why wouldn't I?" your best friend feigns.
You don't want to say immediately that it's because Calum played hero last night and had to pick you up because he, in fact, had Chelsea's phone. So instead, you play a little stupid along with her.
"Because you were supposed to pick up Claire and I from the bar last night," you say.
"Listen, Calum and I broke up. I didn't feel like going out. You seem like you got home okay, anyway," she says. There's no remorse, only sharpness, defensiveness. It curls around your chest in a vice-like grip. You know Chelsea, and she only acts this way when she's in the wrong about something. Usually, you end up ignoring it, looking the other way. Right now, hurt radiates through you from the fact that she had no issue just leaving you stranded if it came to that.
Only because you're curious, you ask the question you've wanted to ask since last night.
"Why did you break up?"
There's a silence over the line and for a moment, you wonder if the call dropped, but when Chelsea speaks again, you know two things: your friend, you no longer feel like you can call her your best friend, is not telling you the full story, and you don't feel guilty being attracted to Calum, anymore.
"I met someone else, okay? Sue me for being young and wanting to keep my options open." You don't have time to respond to the allusion that someone who you thought to be the most loyal person alive cheated, because Chelsea hangs up immediately after.
You stare at the phone, dumb-founded. Fighting the urge to call her back and demand an explanation, you toss your phone down on the counter and start to make yourself toast. You try not to think about Chelsea as you wait for the bread to brown, but you do.
Chelsea has always been one of those people who seemed to care deeply about others. But at times, you have questioned if that compassion was falsified for her benefit. You've always dismissed those thoughts, calling yourself critical, but after this conversation, you feel that you've always been right.
Your mind goes to Calum as you heavily butter your toast. There's some pity there for him. He's too good to be getting cheated on. You think of his eyes again, his plump lips, the way he looked over you. And suddenly, none of it makes sense. You're best friends with the girl who wronged him, why the hell would he have any desire to make sure you got home safe?
Taking a bite of the toast, you groan at the way the oils coat your mouth and tongue, already improving the acrid residue of a night out on your tongue. You bring your plate to the counter and manage a few more bites before there's a knock on your apartment door.
Fuck, Calum said he'd be by this morning.
You look down at your naked body, not bothering to put on clothes yet since pulling yourself out of bed.
"Just a minute!" you croak, realizing you can't put on a full outfit without making him stand outside for entirely too long.
You eye the blanket lying on your couch and wrap it around your body. He saw you in a towel last night; this is essentially the same. You're not entirely convinced but secure it before opening the door, the light of the apparent afternoon, not morning, blinds you.
"Come inside," you say, squinting. "Too fucking bright."
You wave Calum in and when you shut the door, you can actually open your eyes. Calum gazes over your blanket wrapped around your body and you tell yourself it's the hangover that has you imagining the way his eyes momentarily rest on your cleavage.
"Dunno how I feel about seeing you not wearing real clothes so much," Calum deadpans.
"Don't get used to it," you say. "Let me pull on some clothes; I just got up."
You walk gingerly to your room and find a Ramones shirt, tugging it over your head and tug on some cotton shorts you got on clearance at Walmart back in your early twenties.
You re-enter the room and only then do you notice Calum has a paper bag in his hand.
"What's that--"
"How're you feeling--"
You both ask your questions simultaneously and then chuckle awkwardly.
"I picked up some breakfast," Calum says. "I figured you'd be fighting for your life this morning."
You don't stop the soft smile from coming to your face. You try to remember if anyone had ever brought you food after a hangover. At the moment, you can't recall.
"You're right, I am," you say. "We can eat on the couch."
Calum doesn't move until you do, making yourself comfortable on the sofa you got from a consignment shop in east LA a couple of years back. He pulls the coffee table closer to you both as he sits. You do your best not to be hyper aware of the way his knee presses against yours.
"I went to that breakfast joint we all went to a few months back," Calum says, pulling two sandwiches wrapped in tinfoil from the bag. He hands you yours and you're dumbfounded when you realize its the exact sandwich you ordered before.
"Do you remember every little detail about everyone?" you ask, biting into the bun and loving the way the egg yolk is runny when you chew the yolk.
"Sadly," Calum says, beginning his own sandwich.
You know it's probably not the best time to have this conversation, but you broach it anyway. You can always blame your impulsivity on the pounding in your head.
"I know what happened between you and Chelsea," you say.
Calum raises a brow, his forehead crinkling.
"You do, do you?"
"Well, I know she cheated," you say.
Calum's expression shifts and even though you've only spent limited time together, you know he's trying to mask his hurt.
"Did she tell you that?" he asks.
"Not entirely," you say. "But it wasn't hard to put two and two together. I've known her for years and can tell when she's hiding something."
Calum doesn't say anything to that, just stays silent and becomes suddenly infatuated with his sandwich.
"I'm sorry," you say, knowing it's not your place to apologize, but doing it anyway.
Calum laughs a quick, sardonic laugh.
"Why are you sorry?"
You don't know how to be anything but honest, right now. Watching your words is too difficult.
"You're actually a decent guy. You don't deserve that."
You've never touched Calum yourself and you know you're likely going too far, but you feel like you have to reach out. So you do, your hand goes to his knee that brushes yours. Calum's eyes land on your hand and remain there, his face stoic, but you can see that there's thoughts racing behind his eyes. His gaze goes to your face.
"Thanks," he says.
His eyes don't move from your face and you let him watch you. You let yourself notice all the features that you have tried to ignore the last eight months of knowing him. His warm eyes, the bow of his lips, the stubble that grows along his face, the way the smell of the cigarettes he smokes lingers on his skin and it doesn't repulse you. It never did.
Calum clears his throat and you break the gaze.
"I also brought your key back," he says before taking a final bite of his sandwich.
You almost completely forgot about him having it in the first place, but you take it when he places it into your palm. Your fingers briefly wrap around his and a chill runs up your spine.
Another cold shower. You need another fucking frigid shower and maybe elective sobriety for the foreseeable future.
"Thank you for helping me last night," you say, sticking the key into the pocket of your shorts.
"Don't worry about it," Calum says.
"Why did you get me anyway?" you ask, unable to not worry about it. "Chelsea seriously fucked you over and you came to get me anyway. You didn't owe her anything."
Calum's gaze rests on you momentarily, as if thinking over his next words.
"You're a decent person, too," he says finally. "I wasn't going to leave you stranded just because you put your faith in the wrong people."
Then, there's a warmth spreading through you that you know you can't blame on anything except the fact that you are attracted to Calum. And that revelation feels horrible for many a reason as it sinks into your bones. One of them being that you're technically still friends with his ex.
"Thank you," you say, your voice quiet.
Calum purses his lips and nods. He stands, collecting the trash from your breakfast, throwing the leftover napkins into the bag.
"I should be going," he says.
"Yeah," you start, standing with him. "I should--"
"Rest," he finishes for you. An actual smile turns up at the corner of his mouth. It doesn't help the way the warmth bubbles in your stomach.
"Yeah, that," you say, trying to hide your blush behind a laugh.
Calum makes his way toward the door and stops before opening it. He turns to you, his eyebrows scrunched together as if he's questioning what he's about to say to you.
"You have my number. If you need another DD, let me know."
You decide to be brave.
"What if I just want to talk to you?" you ask.
You watch pink creep into his cheeks, subtle, but you find the way it happens to be very cute on him when he comes across as such a mystery.
"That too," he says. You both smile, and you make a mental note of how good he looks when he's happy.
"Okay," you say.
"Okay," he says, and he walks out of your apartment, the door shutting behind him.
You watch after the space where he stood previously and sigh. You lock the deadbolt behind him.
***
Three weeks later and you and Calum have not hung out nor texted, despite what you both said. You've been too scared to text him. You know yourself and the subtle feelings you've had for him for the eight months before he and Chelsea broke up. Now that they are no longer together, those said feelings have only amplified. At night you find yourself going back to the night he rescued you. To the way he watched you with pride as you drank the water, the sensation of your fingers wrapped around his, even if only fleeting.
You know you couldn't trust yourself to not get in too deep if you spent any real time with him. So you stayed away, and with him not reaching out, you guess he was okay with that.
But now, you're at a table at a bar with Chelsea and Chloe both. Chelsea with a new guy, who admittedly, you don't give a fuck about. His name is John, and he's got an attitude like he was put on this Earth to make women roll their eyes. You also silently hate him out of support for Calum; he's so many levels below the quality of man that Calum is. It irritates you, but also, the person Chelsea has become since being with him has you drafting friendship-ending texts in your notes app.
You're not trying to be wishy-washy by not immediately ending it, you're just hoping Chelsea comes back to her senses.
Claire sits across from you, her arm wrapped around the arm of the guy she left you for at the bar. Luke. He's nice enough, and out of all the guys she's dated, he's your favorite thus far. Ironically enough, he is also from Australia. Horrible for you, every time he speaks, he reminds you of Calum.
Calum and the way he said your name over the phone. Calum and the tattoo on the base of his hand. Calum and the way he tried to be respectful of not staring at your body wrapped in anything but clothes. Calum, Calum, Calum.
"So how did you meet?" Claire asks Chelsea after sipping off of Luke's Heineken. This is the first time you've all actually met each other's partners, sans you, of course.
You watch Chelsea's face to see if she tells the truth. She still has not been exact with you, and every day, the rage grows a little bit more. You sip your drink, hoping she redeems herself by being honest. John watches her too. You had ascertained that he was aware she was taken when they began hooking up, but you had no legitimate proof.
"Oh, you know, we just kind of, ran into each other."
An unintended scoff leaves your mouth. You feel Chelsea's piercing eyes on you. People have always said she had pretty ones, but with the blue fixed on you, they don't look pretty. They look lethal. You try to take a big drink from your glass, hoping to cover the slip-up. Hoping to avoid the confrontation you've been fighting the last three weeks to prevent.
All four pairs of eyes land on you when Chelsea bites, "Do you have something to say, (Y/N)?"
For a split second, you contemplate lying and keeping the peace. But, what would be the point? You feel so out of place with the people here at this table. Where you want to be, you've been avoiding for weeks now, because of some false sense of loyalty to these people you once called your friends.
"Yeah, actually," you say, swallowing down the rest of your drink, knowing you're going to need courage for this. The rage and twinge of alcohol burns under your skin. Not enough for full inebriation, but enough to loose your tongue.
"Then go ahead," Chelsea challenges.
"Guys, what is--" Claire tries to intervene, but you don't give her the time.
"I would call fucking some other dude while you're still with Calum anything else but running into each other."
Claire's mouth goes agape and she looks between Chelsea and I. Luke suddenly becomes interested in his Heineken. John sits there, looking stupid and annoying as always.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Chelsea says, feigning disinterest.
At that, something inside you snaps. Chelsea was no longer the person you knew. Chelsea used and took, and when she was caught with the carnage in her hand, she denied. You and Calum both would always be too good for her. So you stand, grabbing your bag and slinging it over your shoulder.
"Since you have no clue, I'm just going to go," you say, pushing in your chair.
"Wait," Chelsea says, her nonchalance dropping for a moment. "Where are you going to go? I drove you here."
By the look on her face, she thinks she has you. She knows how you'd have to wait around outside for at least an hour for an Uber or Lyft to show. But she doesn't know everything about you.
"I have a ride," you say.
You turn and leave the bar, pushing open the doors and letting the sticky humidity of the early evening wash over you. It's refreshing, freeing, even with the heat. You open your phone and dial a number you should have three weeks ago.
Calum answers on the first ring.
"(Y/N)?"
The way he says your name sends warmth flooding through you. You don't feel bad about it, anymore.
"Am I cut off from asking for a ride?" you ask, the question hanging in the air, meaning so much more to you than he could possibly know.
You hear his laugh reverberate from the other end of the line. You want to hear the way it washes over you in person. You want to feel alive in his joy. You want to make up for the three weeks you avoided the truth of what was there in-between the lingering looks you shared.
"Never," Calum says.
You don't stop the smile that pulls at your lips. You're done fighting.
It really is me and my maladaptive daydreaming against the world
