unironically though if you don't know who cecil is you should 100% check out welcome to night vale. it's THE gateway fiction podcast that got an entire generation into podcasting, with incredible quality writing and production, compelling and extremely relevant themes and narratives, a creative and original setting, a delightful combination of supernatural mystery thriller and quirky small-town sitcom-esque shenanigans, a great sense of humor that serves as one of the inspirational sources for a lot of contemporary absurdist internet comedy, genuinely earnest and meaningful messages, and representation that not only actually delivers but is written by people who actually know what they're talking about and have clearly done the work to draw from the lived experiences of a diverse range of people from all kinds of perspectives and walks of life. it's an extremely queer podcast, the podcast that paved the way for many others by having its main pov character openly and enthusiastically express his attraction to men, his earnest love of life and its pleasures, and his disdain for those who seek to abuse their power to cause harm and suppress people's freedom of choice and how they find meaning in their lives as early as 2013, and it's a damn good one. night vale is dear to my heart and so many other people's for offering safety, community, and quality entertainment when it seemed like the rest of the world was against you. it's an incredible work of fiction with a lot of cultural, political and social relevance and a fun story and characters. no joke i recommend it to absolutely everyone.
